the issue is probably the cost of paying Boeing for the maintenance, which for the 200 series used to be spread out over all of those other airlines, is now mostly concentrated on the US Air Force. That and more fuel efficient engines. Concorde had a similar issue, BA could afford to pay the maintenance when they had Air France to share the cost of the program from Airbus, and couldn't afford it all on their own

The hint for the 3d printer may have been a joke, but they actually use the for aircraft parts. I've seen some incredible small gearboxes printed completely assembled and working at the latest Berlin Airshow.

$3 Billion isn't that much when you consider that a 747-8 costs $150M each right off the line. Then you need to customize them for passenger accommodation, communications capability and defense, in an era where the Air Force is well aware that the most likely attack will be cyber in nature.

But that's still 10 times the price of a new normal one

Heels Tar President Obama canceled the new Marine Ones and placed the AF1’s on hold because of the recession he stepped into. Of course Trump won’t do that with our 22 trillion dollar debt. But you are right....they will buy it anyway.

One new Boeing 747 with zero down, 0% interest (if that's real, it's our money) for 30 years . $133,000,000 per year, or $11,830,000 per month.Lets us think about it, we might shop around.Well, don't take too long. I have another country interested also, and they are paying cash.

The electronics and communication systems need an upgrade. Think of the millions of feet of wiring that would be required. The plane would have to be gutted inside to revamp the systems update from 30 years ago. We barely had the internet then so you can extrapolate out from that on the more dense and more powerful components now available. They probably want to install a better missile defense system and who knows, a laser cannon to shoot alien spacecraft out of the sky? If Area 51 is spooky, the secrets they add to the president's plane are probably exponentially greater.
Better to start with a clean slate and build it correctly. They will find usage for the used 747's.

  • @kirbylee57

Well, if there are only two 747s like ours left and they dont make parts for them anymore, it don't sound like we will get much for our trade-in.I think we should have someone that can and will bargain with these guys like Boeing, or just shop around. You can jew these big companies down just like the used car dealers do when they buy cars from their wholesalers. That woman that buys these airplanes for us better be trying to get Boeings bottom dollar and not taking money under the table and giving full asking price. If they just give her two million to go back and tell her boss it cost $4,000,000, she's rich and we pay an extra two billion for the pair of them. And we probably do, or at least a few hundred million. Hell, they could offer her ten million and still knock a home run off each one. Or in used car dealer terms, "knock their dick in the dirt".

Does this puzzle you I think that a 747-400 would be a better air force one for the existing president with more space on the top deck's for the office and for a conference situation room... And retire this old girl to the bush's and the other to William Jefferson Clinton
