- This custom Gerstlauer Infinity coaster holds the world record for most inversions as it flips passengers upside down 14 times throughout the ride. Unfortunately the coaster has been plagued with problems since it opened in 2013, including a serious accident when two cars collided into each other on 2. June, 2015 injuring four riders.
Previously the coaster was closed for four days in July 2013 after a piece fell off the track and 48 people had to be rescued, then in November 2013 it closed for five days after guide wheels fell off and hit four people in the front car.

I looking at all the comments and the crash wasn’t a design fault as the computer system did pick up that the block was occupied it was the operators that ignored the warning and sent the second carriage anyway,, it was a human error

Yeah and merlin (the company that owns alton towers) saud that it can only run in wind speed of up to 45 mph, but they ran ir that day anyway because there was loads of people in the park

It's not the first coaster to have an accident, and sad to say it want be the last. I love Smiler and hopefully I'll get a chance to ride it one day.

coasterforce i think you should remove the part about the crash in the description. it seems quite misleading to what actually happened when it crashed such as "the coaster has been plagued with problems" it makes it sound as if it was the coasters fault when it obvously wasnt. not to mention this did happen about 2 years ago and we need to move on from it. i hope you take the time to read this comment and look into it.

I've been waiting for a POV of this for a while but this is weird timing. My thoughts go out to those injured on the ride today. I hope they make a full recovery. There are serious concerns that must be addressed about the safety of this ride.
Whether it was a cause of careless operators or computer program failure which didn't detect the missing carriage through the first section, one crash is one too many in my opinion. Even if the operators press the button to send out the next carriage, the rides computer should not have allowed it to go out station until the carriage in front had been sensed clear of the first section. This should have been avoided.
The accident was one year ago today :(

Do you think this should have lap bars? This is actually the only Infinity Coaster to have Gerstlauers OTS restraints, and i’m not happy about that :(
Why did the control system allow the train to enter an occupied block? Design FAIL! The wheels falling off in Nov 2013 came from the chain mechanism not a train.
FuzzyTronics We didn't say that the wheels fell off the train and we know they detached from the chain guide as the train ascended the vertical hill, but we've updated the description from just "wheels" to "guide wheels" to sort out any confusion.
The accident also wasn't necessarily a design fail. If the control system was reset while the second train was held on the lift (which is reported to have been about 10-15 minutes) and the first train had already valleyed (not moving), the control system would not know about the occupied block. A visual check is necessary at that point because the sensors can't pick up the stationary train.
***** Sorry I wasn't trying to imply you meant the coaster wheels and not the guide wheels I was just trying to clarify the situation for other people reading the comments. As for the control system even after a reset it should know how many trains where on track before the reset and nothing should be allowed to move until it is told all the trains positions.
***** If the operators can reset the control system while trains are half-way around, there should be an idiot proof fail safe. For example, it can only be reset if every checkpoint is occupied by a train and the brakes are all activated. If not, there should be a like a button near each checkpoint where the operator has to physically go out to press to confirm the track is clear. I agree with Fuzzy in that nothing should move at all until the computer knows the positions of all the trains after being reset.
FuzzyTronics Maybe the coaster was in full manual mode, which could be really weird, i guess it's a Gerstlauer construction problem, or design.
Aydemphia Surely even in full manual mode the block rules shouldn't be able to be overridden, or not easily.
This ride is very close to saw the ride at Thorpe park! Same designers❤️
Still, rollercoasters are still 100x safer than cars. This is just a case of poor maintenance and negligence by the park.

*RIP The Smiler: 2013-2015*. Chances are it will never reopen again, hence news articles saying that there have been serious losses in revenues this season. Mainly due to the negative PR because of the incident.
+Leonardo Bruzzone Nope. A few months ago, AT confirmed the accident was due to "human error". The workers have been fired and it will reopen in 2016.

I give a lot of crap for this ride's theming, I feel like its novelty wore off fast and now it's just a derpy name, but that wall corner illusion at the end is actually pretty cool and it would be neat if the ride had a few more effects like that, though maybe it does and the camera missed it
