    The "perfectly flat" western made planes is a pretty good myth, I believed it until I accidentally nicked my Veritas block plane too. Went to touch up the surface on a piece of granite and was shocked that only part of the plane was acutlly being cleaned up. Spent a few extra minutes lapping and now that block plane has stayed perfectly flat

      @SethsProject  Год назад +1

      Yeah, honestly it would make the planes much more expensive if they were all lapped, so it's kind of a good thing in a way especially if you have the tools to fix it. It's crazy how much better the plane performs when it's dead flat though!

      @@SethsProject it really is impressive how much better they work, I've been moving away from buying the new ones and trying to restore the old Stanley's. I never really noticed the difference until I compared a freshly flattened Stanley vs my Veritas Jack and there really is a difference!

      @@anthonydtobias That is the applicator, and the oil I use with it. You put the oil in the reservoir and the material at the top soaks it up and stays oiled as long as you still have oil in the bottom lol. I hope that makes sense.

    I would like to think that my lie-Nielsen smoothing plane that I paid $750 for, is flat. It looks flat to me with my straight edge 🤷‍♀️

    • @SethsProject
      @SethsProject  Год назад

      lie Nielsen is probably the best in terms of flatness, but I'd still say they don't lap the soles though. If I was an ignorant guessing man I'd say they are just ground. When I get my granite surface plate I'd like to do a test will the all name brand planes to see which one is the most flat.

    Oh yeah those “western” tool. Japanese are always better.

      I think there are pros and cons to both. Cutting on the pull stroke is far superior in my opinion.

    Why oh why do you young guys get so wound up about flat you don't need to go to the extreme you go to chippendales furniture makers had basic wood planes they got on with it I am z 60 year old full time woodworker 46 Yr under my belt

    • @SethsProject
      @SethsProject  Год назад +4

      Well I no longer use planes for dimensioning because I use power tools for that process, so I need my planes to be able to take an accurate fine shaving ready for finish. Flattening the sole makes that possible. Nothing wrong with wanting the best from your tools.

      it’s amazing that Seth has the skills and knowledge to achieve something so beautiful, as well as flattening this plane in a way that fits with what he is making. It’s wonderful what you can achieve with the right tools and time, regardless of your age.
