[Lighter and Princess 点燃我，温暖你] Zhu Yun's university life just began, but it was disrupted by the arrival of the bad boy, Li Xun, who overturned her world. Li Xun, who appears like a rebellious good-for-nothing, is actually a programming genius. However, the two of them gradually learn to appreciate each other's talent and knowledge after a few interactions. When senior Fang Zhi Jing tries to pick on Zhu Yun, Li Xun defends her and even invited her to join her programming team. Together, they won the championship of the programming competition. In every episode I felt Li Xun saying "PERSONAL SPACE what's that?"😏 There is nothing like Personal Space between the Lighter and Princess.

Really hope you have watched this drama. It is well worth the effort. It feels very real. Competition in school, social prejudices, new opportunities, parental dominance, it really gets around a lot of the challenges of modern society and is quite openly critical. One of the interesting things about chinese drama censorship is that it will give a fair amount of largesse to a drama IF it takes on social issues that the Politburo have on their list of ideological issues. This for example while China values orthodoxy it is also working to create innovation, meritocracy etc and at the same time it is seeking to curb opportunistic classist behaviours in those who achieve success. So in this case since this drama deals openly (and quite thoroughly) with a number of these issues (dishonesty in their classmate, excessive rigidity in the mother, new opportunities in the friend he made in prison) they got quite a lot of flexibility on showing relationship intimacy and rebelion. And it is genuinely a beautiful romantic story but so much more than just a romance.

The script and direction for this drama are great. The story creates a somewhat hardened and tormented but essentially healthy and hardworking intelligent young man and a "nice" but firm and strong female and captures all the joy of mutual admiration and attraction. I also like the way it openly challenges Chinese stereotypes about who the "good" and "bad" kids are. Lu xin is q victim of her mother's deep social prejudice and his classmates unhealthy competitive urge that leads to dishonesty. It tells you not to judge a book by the cover.
