How often is stud framing perfectly flat? Even with our KERDI-BOARD building panel, that is designed to be flat, level, plumb and square--severe warping behind these sheets can have an effect when fastening the panels to framing. I’m a beginner and I’m going to use Schluter because I KNOW I’m installing it correctly. I came to you initially through the widely-watched videoed of an NTCA tiler of vast experience named Sal DiBlasi who is high on Schluter products and frequently demonstrates their correct installation. And, man, is he ever a stickler for correct installation, even explaining the process of hydration as the reason for the detailed choice between modified and unmodified thinset for your flooring product. I suggest you would profit from an association with him and that he is a high quality NTCA Pro that would make you proud of it.

Nice! I just completed the schluter innovation work shop part 1....and will definitely be using this method a lot, 100 plus year old houses that I remodel bathroom and showers in are NEVER straight, plumb, or square. This will save me a ton of time!

Thank you for watching! Our expertise is Kerdi-Board. So unfortunately we do not have any testing or details for you on wet shimming of gypsum board.
Schluter-Systems North America fait enough . I do all my bath/shower with Schlutter . But there is a section that I do with normal gypse .

Hi Mario! Thanks for the question. So, it's usually best to wait 3-4 hours or longer for the thin-set to firm up, depending on installation conditions.

It's much more fun when it's an outside wall, with lots of fluffy fiberglass insulation wanting to get mixed with the thinset. Also, the insulation can push the wall board away, so, like they sort of did here, you have to drive the screws in *just enough* to keep it square/flat/plumb until it hardens, then drive them home.
Your fiberglass insulation should be covered with plastic and stapled before applying any backerboard if you are doing a shower or bathroom

Do you wait til the thinset is fully hardened before screwing in all the way? Like basically wait til the next day?
Great video! I have a couple of questions: a) how do you level the backer board when the tub is not level? b) measuring the shims to level/plumb the wall; do you cut the shims from 2x4's and just cut shims for the large gaps?

I have floor joists that are out of level. I wish to tile the floor. How do I level the joists and also what waterproof schluder system do I use for floor. Thanks David Also what size screws to use for wall as in your videos.
Hi Absolute Plumbing & Heating. 1. Joists are typically crowned, therefore not level. If leveling is still needed, approval by a building official/engineer is needed to cut/modify. Please remember that all leveling must occur below our products, typically on substrate with use of patch self leveling underlayment (SLU). Follow manufacturer's requirements and recommendations for SLU installation. Please contact a design professional or structural engineer for further assistance.
B. The DITRA uncoupling membrane with KERDI-BAND over the seams is generally recommended for waterproofing of floors. For further details, please see the appropriate detail in the Schluter DITRA Installation Handbook C. The screws we use are #6 size and 1.5", 2" or 3" long. The selected screws must be of sufficient length to reach a depth of at least 3/4" (20 mm) in wood studs and at least 3/8" (10 mm) in metal studs. Hope this helps!

Hi! About to install my first Kerdi shower/bath. What kind of thin set /Morter do we use for wet shimming? I know that we need unmodified for the front of the kerdi board.
Use Schluter All Set for everything. It’s a modified thinset mortar that’s approved for all Schluter applications

With this method though, how do you ensure your back wall is 90deg to your side walls? It’s also kind of difficult to shoot for a particular measurement between the two side walls such as 60”, the length of a typical Schluter Shower Tray. Thanks.

I wet set all the time..gotta keep an eye on it and set a few screws before thinset sets up.
Is it important that the gaps are on those studs where we don't place Kerdi screws? Or only those where the screws are located should be leveled. Also could you tell what happens if there are some gaps? Will the tile fall or it will be just visual effect of not very leveled tiling? Thank you for the great film.

Will a non Schluter brand thin set mortar used to wet shim void the warranty? I know from the other comments it doesn’t matter if it is modified or unmodified. Thanks!
Hi Tom, a non-Schluter thin-set will not void the warranty, no. As long as our Handbook guidelines are followed, you should be all set. Thanks!

Do you need to add the set to all studs or just the studs that are bowed inward? Ie if one or two studs are bowed inward and the rest are in plane and plumb, would it work just adding the thin set to the out of plane studs?
Hi there, In our video, we did all of the studs to give the best opportunity for success. If the other studs are in plane and plumb then, yes, you can just add thin-set to the out of plane studs. Hope this helps!

Hi there, the type of thin-set mortar used does not matter in this case. The thin-set mortar is not used to bond the KERDI-BOARD to the studs, but as a shim. The KERDI-BOARD is secured to the studs using the screws. Hope this helps!
I think mortar doesn't stick to vertical wood for very long. Won't it just fall later?

I was not looking forward to firring out the studs that, over the years, have deformed. They are perfectly strong, just somewhat cupped in places. This method will make it perfect.
Can someone tell me the ratio of water to Allset to use for shimming. Tried and failed miserably yesterday - thinset way too runny and I don't want to waste more experimenting. Also, mix by hand?

What is the water to thinset ratio you used to wet shim? All you mentioned is "fairly stiff thinset".
It sort of depends on how much you want to build up. You want it to be stiff enough to not just fall off, but not so stiff that it isn't workable. You could try the ratio mentioned on the bag for installing tile (not membrane) but adjust it to be just a little stiffer and see if that works. You are looking for a peanut butter type consistency. Depending on conditions, it may take a couple of tries to get it right. Hope this helps!

Is this process applicable to walls with Metal Studs?
Hi there! Metal studs should not need shimming like wood studs because they are made to be uniform in size and shape. However, if there is variation in the metal stud that needs to be addressed, we would not recommend wet-shimming. We would suggest contacting the stud manufacturer for their input.

Hmmm. I would fix the framing as much as possible first. What would happen to criticall finish dimensions ESPECIALLY tolerances for fixture trims. This seems like a convenient but very random way of solving a framing issue. Especially if the rogue stud were protruding into the space. Id also recommend insulation in those wall cavities. Ouch, that could get a bit messy once you start sticking those mud shims to the studs. Use a laser and fix your wall
Hi there! Thanks for the comments. Insulation in certain instances is for sure a good idea. Any time you can fix the framing, that's a good way to go as well. In this case, the other side of the wall had drywall installed already, so wet shimming was the better option. Using KERDI-BOARD to wet shim is just another option that may be more convenient in some situations and is fairly quick to do and gives that nice flat wall you need for your trims and such. Hope this is helpful!

You did not specify the kind of thinset used, modified or unmodified. My concern is that the wood will suck water out of unmodified
thinset. Perhaps it is of no consequence in this application. I just want to get it right.
In other comments Schluter answered saying it doesn't matter what kind of thinset you use since it's only being used to shim, not for actual bonding to the board. So personally i used modified thinset for the reason you stated and it worked out great. When I called them to ask they also confirmed it did not matter what kind of thinset.

Why do they mention unmodified. I had to go buy unmodified when I already have another brand of modified thinset

Me again. Question: is there a limit to the kind of gap that can be shimmed using this method? I have a stud that appears to be quite a bit out of plumb. Maybe up to an inch over 8 feet.

What I've learned from some films about Kerdi-Board the allowed limit for those gaps is about 1/8".
Just an update if anyone is interested. I ended up using a combination of actual wooden shims.plus wet shimming to get my wall plumb for tiling. Must have done something right cause the finished product looks great!
I'd say maybe 1/4" or so. More than that it's more likely to crack when the screws are tightened down. Just my opinion though.

Why not just use drywall shims? Quicker, cheaper, easier & no waiting for them to dry.....

Thanks for your question. The nice thing about using thin-set is that it is more precise and does not leave any gaps throughout the length of the stud. You can also do it all at one shot. Drywall shims would be another acceptable option, especially if you need to use them to save time, but you must be careful not to leave any unsupported spaces and, in some instances, it could take longer to try and get each separate stud shimmed out individually.

Theres not enough of mud in contact w board itll chip away n cause movement later .why not use wood shims and nail no moisture no rot no wetness no mold n wont chip away
