What is the fuzz. The Curry Cup is the breading and hunting ground for the franchises, and the URC contracted players should not play in the Curry Cup. Leave it for the upcoming future players and let the URC contracts rest.

Players need rest so I say let the Currie Cup games be openers for URC home games, on away games let them play on Friday nights or Sunday afternoons. They’ll need to bring entertainment settings like NFL style, concerts before/halftime, jumping castles for kids, halftime competitions/giveaways etc & make it a spectacle. Rugby in SA is only just about 80 min in the field, SARU needs to do more to draw people into appreciating the Currie Cup. Coach Jimmy said it best, “Currie Cup doesn’t belong in a museum”

We need local rugby, we can’t afford to lose the Currie Cup. Let the players with A LOT of minutes in the URC rest and play those that need game time mixed with some young talent/upcoming talent

This was going to be my comment. Make the Curry Cup it's own. Give players that much needed game time and allow the main players to rest. Get the spectators involved.

Its a difficult problem to solve, as the currie cup as taken 2nd thought to the URC but obviously it’s important to rest the players, but I hope the currie cup continues and is restored to its former glory

Perhaps reinventing the Currie cup for school boy rugby. Take the top 30 schools or whatever number. Make groups selected randomly.
Playoffs take place at the big stadiums
Teams whom finish last in their groups. Get relegated and the next year 6 new teams come up.
    I don’t know. Just a thought.
A new way of keeping our oldest cup alive.

Everything went tits up on a cold winter morning back in 1995 when the sport decided the franchise route was the way to go.

Nah, we have won 3 world cups since then. We also have have had many good years with the franchises. Global recognition, ultimately bringing millions of rands into the country.

It's already been mandated that any player that's playing in the URC needs to have a consecutive 8 week break before they play in the Curry Cup. Jake white was talking about it a while back when he was discussing the mandatory rest periods for players

  • @yootoooob
    @yootoooob 7 месяцев назад +3

why not just move the break earlier during the URC ?

It would be a big shame that the oldest rugby cup in the world will be no more. How do they do it in the UK where you have the domestic Gallagher Premier ship still in full force? The CC will make sense for our bigger unions to "blood" their development players (some who are coming from Varsity cup), against the like of the Pumas, Griquas etc. Thus giving big name players the rest. CC can also serve to give established players some game time post injuries.

Oh…btw…last year SR Pacific had 25k in attendance in the final…less than our CC final

The players association is being selfish and only focusing on the big players. We need to put Currie Cup first. It was here before us and need be here after we are in the ground. It needs to be brought back to it's former glory

The NPC in New Zealand is also dying a slow death. We haven’t talked about cancellation tho instead moving teams to home town stadiums and only certain games get coverage like derby’s

you cannot expect the players to ply 12 months of the year.
URC comes first. and is the premier competition
play a separate competition and show it on tv on a Monday or Wednesday night and you will have the viewer ship
All this requires is a bit of innovative thinking
please polish the curry cup and put it into a showcase SARU, it is NOT the same as the old days
SARU needs to wake up and get rid of all the old school guys there who are riding the gravy train

Why don't the premiere teams use the b teams ho play in the currie cups as a option.

Go back to basics before 1996.
The Currie Cup should become an "amateur" competition again being fed by and represented by the Clubs and Universities. That way its not a tier 2 professional competition but a Tier 1 national "amateur" competition.
That would get viewership because players would be totally different and club players get a chance to play on a national level - it would revitalise club rugby. The tier 2 professional and Academy players could play too but not the Tier I Professional players who get a rest.

The problem is DSTV .... If DSTV did not monopolize rugby SO MUCH ... If SABC would show local rugby the fan base would not have declined to where is is now ... fans would see more rugby AND go to the live games ... Fact !

In many sports, the top teams own what they call farm teams. Why should that not happen in SA rugby?

  • @brandanbooysen7419

In my opinion we should let go of the currie cup. The games dont get attention anyway and we can pool the resources from just focusing on the URC to streamline and train even better players than the “hidden gems” we find in the smaller clubs. #curriecupout

I was baited in to watch this…rassie’s image and the title…there’s nothing firm supporting the cancellation at the moment. The varsity and club competitions are healthy…and I tell you, I would go and watch that talent wearing provincial colours. In a Currie Cup without Boks and franchise contracted players. Last year there was 33 000 people watching the final as the cheetahs beat the pumas. The year before the pumas beat the Griquas in an awesome final without any Boks or regular franchise players. There’s no reason to cancel and decisions by rugby brains…including our rassie in the pic (who by the way was not mentioned once by the way). Knowledgable rugby minds will know better.
