Good evening Simple Living, if you wish to live simply and keep yourself healthy. Leaking stucco walls causes mold that when it enters your house, you cant see it unless it turns black. If this happens, it's not good. Each time you, your lover, your kid, dog, or even a cat walks by. Dried mold becomes airborne, then you inhale it, not good, either. My advice to you is your low on cash, as most are, pressure washes the exterior wall that's leaking, then caulk any and all cracks after you have sealed all the cracks or gaps. Thanks. I appreciate your videos. I'm currently deciding whether or not to pay a stucco guy or do the job myself. Termite damage, will likely have to cut the stucco from the outside of the house because the damage may be above the ceiling of the garage ( I can't access it from within the garage anymore, I've exposed the wood header above the garage door but I will have to cut into the facade above the top of the garage looking from the outside in order to definitively see the extent of the damage vertically). There are so many resources online that say different things that I'm torn about what to do exactly. I'm a complete beginner - what are the basic steps from the wood header all the way to the finishing touch? Wood, paper, lath, stucco coat 1, stucco coat 2?
@iip47c Hey dude, good question. Our pneumatic staple guns use staples from 7/8 up to 2 inches to account for most sheer wall sizes (plywood usually) what is necessary is for 7/8 of the staple leg to be into the stud for fastening wire to the supporting structure. This necessary nailing or stapling gives the wall the needed structural strength per square inch to accommodate for the weight of the stucco. Improper nailing usually results in cracking. Have a groovy day! Kirk Giordano Plastering

Kirk, I've removed the interior drywall and insulation in a room behind stucco. The wood plyboard behind the stucco is rotted. Not wet anymore. Fixed the leak source outside (roofer didn't use flashing!!!)...Question is, if only about a 2' wide section of the board is rotted, is their a solution where I can NOT have to break down the stucco outside and put a new board in?
Howdy mark, I am really sorry to say this but "no," if their was, I would have used that quicker method myself. Viewed this one several times Kirk because it's fairly typical of wall problems in our Eastern climates. Might add...the gutter above that wall looks to me very unhelpful. I'd bet that the bent section above where you first started the video allowed water to simply cascade over the gutter edge and down their exterior wall. There didn't seem to be any downspout to carry water from the gutter section past the foundation into the property. You were smart to charge T&M especially on a job needing several local code inspection visits.
Good morning pensive, there were quite a few reasons this wall was in bad shape, a gutter would have been a great idea. best wishes, Sound advice for plastering issues from your favorite stucco geeks
Clorox solution? especially on porous gypsum does not work. Firstly, it is not EPA approved for disrupting spores because it is not effective. Secondly, the solution is mainly water, approximately 97%, which soaks into the porous surface and feeds the spores. The chlorine is used up on the surface and does not penetrate. In essence you are just giving any cultures a hair cut followed by a massive buffet. The worst part is your public video is promoting a technique and solution for killing mould that gives viewers false information especially when there can be serious health concerns. The wall is then covered up with the moisture inside and the homeowners believe that is the end of the problem.
