    That chair is grand. I'm going to make one in my woods. I think that would be perfect. I plan to put lawn chairs along the hiking trails to rest on. That would work wonderfully. Cool.

    Hi Fell Wanderer, I have used the straw and the water bottle. Both seem good as I have never been ill using them, I do however use the water bottle more. I drain the water through a home made filter to clear the debris and crap from it then use the bottle, if I can I boil it too. Nice video mate

    Absolutely interesting well put together vid, thoroughly enjoying, loved the tripod chair. the First Need Elite Portable Water Purifier is also a great filter similar in shape to yours, slightly heavier slightly more expensive Removes: Bacteria, Viruses, Giardia, Cryptosporidia, Parasitic Cysts, Pesticides, Algae, Odours, Colours, Sediment, Foul Tastes, Herbicides, Organics, can also be used as gravity feed without the pump which you may be able to do with yours and with a do it yourself in line car petrol pre filter (new) of course to extend life of the master filter attached between the master and first filter works great and is far better and lighter than carrying loads of water as you said. Thumbs up.

    • @Fell_Wanderer
      @Fell_Wanderer  10 лет назад

      I will have a look at the First Need Elite Portable Water Purifier now, sounds like better specs than the Katadyn Hiker Pro, the gravity feed is a good feature in case the pump breaks then you still have a filter, which Ive never tried it with mine yet. Im going to get a backup filter and havent decided yet but will go and check out the one you suggested, thanks for your comment

    • @Fell_Wanderer
      @Fell_Wanderer  9 лет назад

      mounty27 I think the milspec camelbak is better made and of higher spec than the regualr one and has the quick link connectors and anti abrasive sleeve on the drinks tube, its a bit tougher and great for hooking up to a water filter. If you buy the regular model (Blue colour version) you can still attach to a water filter but have to buy extra cpc quick link connectors, Atb and thanks for the sub, Damian

    Great vid, if u attach an emergency blanket with spray adhesive to the inside of the tarp the heat would be alot better !

    • @Fell_Wanderer
      @Fell_Wanderer  10 лет назад

      There was one on the groundsheet I was lying on but I cut the tarp a little small for winter camping and used pva glue to adhere the space blanket which wouldn't stick very well, the glue became sticky when left in the damp woods so abandoned the idea of using it reflective side up, your right it would have been a good idea, I should have used a better method of gluing in the first place, its getting milder now in the UK so wont need to use that method till next winter hopefully

    Check out the Sawyer Mini and Sawyer regular. Much smaller in size and will filter 1200 gallons of water. Simpler to use and can be rigged for gravity feed, My water looks much worse than yours so I carry a Millbanks bag to prefilter it, Works great and cuts down on filter cleaning. I like the coffee filter idea! Great video!

    • @Fell_Wanderer
      @Fell_Wanderer  10 лет назад

      I have plans to get a sawyer mini as they are really good, more versatile with better specs than the Hiker Pro, although I'll still need to get a carbon filter. The only thing I'm concerned about the Hiker Pro is it has moving parts (pump) which might break down in the field so a back up filter is a good idea, thanks for watching

    • @TheSilverBinder
      @TheSilverBinder 10 лет назад

      Can't beat the price either. If you look about in big hardware stores in the plumbing sections where they sell water filters you might be able to pick up an in-line carbon filter that you can cobble into your system. I have used harwood charcoal mixed in my Millbanks bag with the water then allow to drain and then filter through the Sawyer or the Hiker Pro. You are right too many things could go wrong with the HP. I try to work on the KISS principal. Still they both work and clean water is necessary.

    Get yourself some plastic 2" plumbing pipe, about 5" long. Put the green bit from a scourer pad in the bottom, add cotton wool on top of that, then some activated charcoal from an aquatic fish tank supplier, on top of that add some fine sand then top it off with old cotton rag. Filter all yer water through this first, then either straw or bottle into the webtex. Safe as houses mate

    • @Fell_Wanderer
      @Fell_Wanderer  10 лет назад

      thats a good way to filter water with every day items lying around, in a survival situation that would be great, I'd boil the water afterwards then it would be totally safe

    I think under Normal circumstances it's just fine to drink water in the back county filterd with your filter an not boiled. And anyone who thinks a Sawyer mini is a better filter your wrong. Sawyer minis should be considered disposable, the ONLY reason I buy them is there 22 bucks. I know it says 100,000 gallens but trust me (I have used them ALOt) you'd never get anywhere close to that before it got completely clogged up. I always have 3 ways to process water to ensure good times in the backcountry.

  • @donnybigboy
    @donnybigboy 10 лет назад

    Ah, you need to start on 240p for the settings then all works fine after, another fantastic video mate. Have you ever tried the Webtex Surviva-Pure Water Purification system, after filtering to save some work with the filters works great.

    • @Fell_Wanderer
      @Fell_Wanderer  10 лет назад

      I've sussed it, hi-def doesn't work straight away thats why the screen was blank, it takes a while for the video to be processed, it was only on 360p when I last looked and now its gone right up to 1080p while I'm writing this, I've not tried the Webtex Surviva-Pure system although looks a good system does it kill viruses?. it has a 0.2 micron filter so better than the Hiker Pro, I've previously only used chlorine tabs or boiled water, thanks for your comment

    ..@.Fell Wanderer does camp in dire conditions and un-savoury places not that winter camping in damp local woods is an bad idea because when the going gets tough you do need that resource..Once i had to camp between barbed wire fencing and an lay-by on an Belgian "N" road near the town of Maledgem i woke-up confused to foolishly proceed down the road in the wrong lane what an fright when trucks appeared heading straight for me...I now use arrow stickers on the mirrors of the cycle or motorcycle to mark out which side the pavement should be on when on the continent...Also having been forced off the A1 in torrential rain ive bunked down in an public park next to Doncaster race course to wake-up with all my gear wet and motorcycle checked out by police as i slept..but the nice guys they never woke me up...Fell Wanderer its an fact with prolonged camping you do become more aware of intrusion even in sleep..Is that the latent animal still present in humans perhaps an descendant of the reported UK wildman...I wonder..?

      ...@Fell Wanderer wild men such ourselves are more aware than most the primordial being within and your quite right to point to the frailties of the human condition not conducive to circumstance..Many scientific finds confirm your belief skeletons in ancient Egypt America and elsewhere with elongated cranial formations are found and still today world-wide Big Foot/Sasqauch phenomana is reported...Its intresting you note an superior being over men with stated abode of the heavens called God because in 21AD with mans exploration of the cosmos his technological scientific advances the concept of God the philosophy of religion and the historical miracle of mankinds faith in this the age of advancement should certainly be far more worthy of scientific scrutiny...One point to note despite scientific edict it would appear that life on Earth could not possibly be of Earth its so archaic without witness of any evoloution taking place here..Its in all probabilty phenomana as old as the universe itself possibly deliberately or accidentally present on earth as life and man are particularly advanced in intellect and physicality (Bipedal) without any un-natural pre-requisite for clothes etc that you point to...I think most would certainly agree there is something out there in the cosmos perhaps an God perhaps not ...But Fell Wanderer with luck may we all have its protection on our wonderous travels and adventures?..I ask the forum again please report to keep us informend on the growing UK Big Foot/Wildman/Alien phenomana have any seen it out there..?

    hows goes! liken ur vids man, informative, new to the wild camp set-up and wanted ur opinion on a water filter iv just bought-the drink-safe travel-tap, claims 1600ltrs, have used it already from a lake using a sock first as a pre-filter,water looked green but tasted great, the flow is ok, but regarding viruses do i need to boil also, im in ireland,,ta mate..keep it wild!!a sub from muself..

      I cant comment on your filter as I dont know it but filters will remove fine particles giving clearer water and if they are fine enough, around 0.2 or 0.3 microns will remove larger bacteria like Giardia and Cryptosporidium, virus's are much smaller so you will need to boil your water, also you will need a filter with activated charcoal to help remove chemicals like pesticides and other nasty stuff than runs off the land and into the rivers, boiling wont remove chemical only concentrate them. EDIT, just looked up your filter and it seems really good, I'll cut and paste some info here, Quote,
      "Proven to remove waterborne disease
      causatives; Bacteria, Protozoa including Cryptosporidium, Giardia,
      E-coli, viral disease causatives and Anthrax immediately
      Taste and taint
      Chemicals
      Herbicides
      Pesticides
      Purification chemicals and Fluoride
      Sediments and heavy metals" end quote.

      I'm in a bivvy bag and the woods is quite sheltered anyway, if the SHTF I'd flip the bivvy upside down so the hood is on the top and won't let water in. I enjoy the bivvy experience so see no need to go for the tent option, atb

      Definitely a winner and great value for money, I've tried a few in the "look what we've found" range and I still like meatballs the best.

      I take as little as I can get away without having a bad nights sleep or putting myself in danger, after each trip I can think of something to leave at home for the next time to lighten the load, its a balance between comfort and necessity, it can be hard work to prepare and light an open fire then cook on it, and its easier to turn the tap and light the gas but that's just like cooking at home, part of the fun and challenge is using what resources are around you even if its junk that someone has left behind, its kind of recycling I guess :-)

      Fell Wanderer Guess I'll really have to try and be a little stricter with myself. surplus to requirements items seem to also find a way of creeping into my pack, even on a days walk!

    • @Fell_Wanderer
      @Fell_Wanderer  10 лет назад

      I found that the bigger the pack the more you are tempted to fill right up to the top, having a small pack makes you think hard what to take and what to leave behind, I'm using a 35L bag and thats fine for a couple of nights but any longer and during really cold weather would be a little too small so it really depends on the situation
