  • Wild Camping in the woods with a home made hammock built from a 1 tonne builders dumpy bag and cheap utility tarp. A look at camera flash brackets and what I use to mount equiptment when shooting RUclips videos in the dark. Camp chat and cooking on an open fire.

    A great vid. What an idea a good ol dumpy bag. No one is going to go there unless they want to pick up the rubbish and, if it's one like you they will do as you did.

    I'm late watching this video. I have to say, I like your homemade hammock better than the ones that are gathered at each end. It looks more comfortable.
    One disadvantage to a hammock is when there are no trees, such as in the Scottish highlands.
    Watching your videos has convinced me that a hammock or bivvy with a tarp are the best systems going for camping. If fact, there might be less weight bringing a hammock and bivvy and tarp than lugging a heavy tent around. I just love your videos.

    Another fantastic video Damian. Love your modest style, knowledge and humour. Currently a 'keyboard warrior' while I gather kit, you're inspiring lots of us to give it a go, can't wait. The stag anecdote was thought provoking. Thank you for sharing your experiences, I'm sure it's very time consuming but sooo appreciated!

    Another great video, thank you for the entertainment. I like ground dwelling and hammocked camping. I tend to get a better nights sleep in the hammock. But it's nice to have both pieces of kit, and the hammock takes up very little space in the rucksack. I'm going to buy DD hammocks sleeping bag they zip up the front which is better for the hammock rather than The Side zipper.look forward to your next video all the best.

    Hammock camping definitely gets addictive esp when set up right, also it enables to you to camp out on uneven ground and damp areas too, I once even pitched across a small stream. Only down side is you need two trees at specific distances from each other, but apart from that it rocks. Always a pleasure seeing your videos Damo and wishing you plenty of outdoors adventures for the year ahead ~Peace~

    You're a good old boy for sorting the rubbish, as a hippy i respect that. I went down my woods and started picking a few bits, about 2 hours later i finished and the bag was ready to burst.
    I love camping, but the cold in this country (southern softie) put me off tenting and since i tried the hammock i never looked back. Your airmat would be better than the roll mat though. What you just proved is having next to nothing-you can still have a good time, people ain't happy unless their flashing names and labels at you.
    Awesome, have a great 2016 and look forward to your next vid, all the best to you and the family. P.S. Home made gear is where it is :-)

    • @Fell_Wanderer

      +Stu M Good on you for removing the litter, I only wish there were more like us. Was thinking of using my thermarest for the hammock but have since seen a guide on how to make an underquilt from an army poncho liner so will have a go making one of those. ATB, Damian.

    • @Fell_Wanderer
      @Fell_Wanderer  8 лет назад

      +Stu M I've not tried an underblanket yet but from what I understand if used without sag will give good protection from the cold as lying directly on top would compress the insulation and give less protection from the cold. An air mat is ok so long as you don't keep shifting off them. I wanted a Jacklore also and made enquiries but Sandy's order book was full so made do with the TBS Boar which I'm happy with but still love my Mora Bushcraft Triflex as its light enough to hang around my neck, I dont have to belt mount and easy to just pick up and go. I wouldn't trust the Mora for batoning and other rough stuff but the Boar has done some serious work and has held up well. ATB, Damian.

    I totally agree with you on the fact that you don't need to spend a fortune to get outdoors and do some wild camping. I'm a big fan of surplus gear aswell : ) Like you say, it's heavier but well made! : )
    Also.. There are too many people out there that just talk about getting outdoors... just do it i say! : ) Ya can't beat just getting outdoors and relaxing.
    And on a side note, your editing is awesome mate, That must take a lot of time. Top notch stuff buddy : )

      +GoonieBushcraft Thanks Jay that was my first hammock camp and loved it, not sure if its my preferred method though as I like to use a tarp and bivy. The editing is taking ages as Im on a learning curve with editing 2 cameras and color correcting/grading which I know isn't perfect but getting there. I know some people shoot, edit and upload a video in a couple of days and thats fine. I like to take my time and get things refined and polished, the best I can achieve because its a memory to look back on in the years to come and want it to be as good as possible. Even after uploading I see things which could have been done better and I guess thats the drive in me to improve things. ATB, Damian.

    Brilliant Damian a proper character el cheapo tarp hammock yet hundreds if not thousand pounds worth of camera gear ..haha love it mate .i personally do prefer the closed end hammocks i find the bed hammocks [ the one you made there ] do seem to stretch lop sided depending on the way you sleep .Same as you young man i dont take a radio or reading books out with me just quite content listening to the sounds of the night ,,always good to see an individual out doing their stuff all the best for 2016 ;;;;steve

      +Andy Buckley I first heard that imortal saying about 30 years ago when my dad farted in front of one of his friends, "more tea vicar" and went to make another cup of tea or fetch another can of beer from the fridge, I don't remember which. Its an old saying, don't know where it originated from but has been passed down from my father to me and hopefully my son to his son lol.. ATB, Damian

    Thanks for the video Damian. As usual I thoroughly enjoyed it. Made me consider hammocks for the first time, I'm a real fidgety sleeper so maybe best not to try one out where you were....I would have been in the river. Well done on the Womble clean up bit mate bloody hate that sort of thing. (and come on what was in the tin...we all know you would have to have opened it...LOL) All the very best for 2016 to you and yours mate. Paul.

    33:20 what about a weighted 4 pint milk carton tied to a rope, just chuck it down a bit like fishing for water a lot safer than a climb in the dark.stay safe on your own and all that.

      The stream is quite shallow for doing that but is a good idea, I cut steps in the ground to make it easier getting down for water

    I've seen on youtube people will make an under quilt for their hammock by taking an old sleeping bag/broken one take the zippers off see two sleeves down the length of it on sides run para cord down them sling it beneath there hammock forming that air pocket between the bottom of the hammock and the under quilt with enough of it to cover the sides! May find at a thrift store or have one in the closet! make it on the cheap! atb

      +Mark Martin thanks pleased you liked it. Thats a good idea for an underquilt, I've got one of thoses Tesco ultra light sleeping bags which has never really kept me very warm unless its the height of summer so might try making one but might be too narrow. So will have a look around the loft I've got a few old sleeping bags up there, ATB, Damian

    Another brilliant video!!! . I really like your laid back attitude and simplistic, improvised methods... I'm deffo gonna be getting out more often and have now got a real passion for the hobby... I know it's a basic question but how do you make your buddy burners please? I've tried a wax/dryer fluff combo and it's good but very smokey, which leaves my pans full of soot.. I've thought of wrapping the pan in foil and then discarding that.. Many thanks for the entertainment from a fellow north east lad...

    • @Fell_Wanderer
      @Fell_Wanderer  8 лет назад

      +andrew armstrong Thanks for the comment. I learned how to make buddy burners from Donny Outdoors, here is the link to his video ruclips.net/video/4HTPKXgfNzY/видео.html
      I use old toilet/ kitchen roll tubes, any old paper lying around and wax from tea light candles. The buddy burners do make the pots sooty but not as bad as cooking on an open fire. If soot is a problem for you then maybe a meths burner is a better option, Damian

    great video and camp Damian, once you go down the hammock route mate you won't go back, interested to know your view and method on cleaning a camel back, have you? do you and if so any chance of a video on what you use? cheers and happy new year Chris. P.S your always welcome to tag along with me one night to talk shite and right the world.

      +acedecs Hi Chris, I used to use a very small amount of bleach to clean the Camelback but this might ruin the the plastic long term so now I use Boots baby sterilising tablets, you get 64 for about around a pound and disolve into 2L water and use to clean all my cookware and Camelback before each trip. ATB for the new year, Damian

    Brilliant instructional video! Ray Mears would be proud of your fire lighting skills. As a keen backpacker I'd considered hammock camping but how do you manage cooking when it's pouring with rain?

    • @Fell_Wanderer
      @Fell_Wanderer  8 лет назад

      +Ronnie G You can cook under a tarp but there isn't much room to dwell and cook if its a small area. For lightweight back packing I have a Siltarp 1 which is 7.5'x4.9' and is just large enough to bivy under and cook but not both together. I've seen hammock campers cooking while in their hammocks, by hanging out close to the ground, if you have a large enough tarp you can camp comfortably and do many things but you have more weight to carry, ATB, Damian.

    • @Fell_Wanderer
      @Fell_Wanderer  8 лет назад

      +Fell Wanderer You can have 2 tarps setup, one for sleeping and another covering a fire or cooking area.

    Wait til you get into a nice big camping hammock when its hung properly, you'll sleep for days hah. That one isnt bad for a first try though. You're right that it was a bit narrow to have a gathered end. It would have just sandwiched you in the middle and been uncomfortable.
    Shame that someone had to leave all the crap in the woods, so nice one for clearing it up, if only more people did the same.
    ATB bud, Mike

      +Fergs uK The new hammock is a TW and is a little heavy at 1200g but wanted something that felt strong and is ripstop nylon, double skinned and slightly wider for diagnal sleeping. I dont trust the really lightweight hammocks as they seem to fragile and might not last as long. I'm sure as time passes I'll change the setup but for now really looking forward to trying it out. The next time in the wood I will burn the old quilt and remove the rest of the rubbish as I love that new spot and seeing the rubbish pisses me right off ATB, Damian.

      I have a TW Hornet, it's absolutely huge and the comfiest thing I've ever slept in or on. Wish I could hang it in the house hah. Yeah, nothing wrong with a bit of pride and respect for the environment.
      Did you sort out those whoopie slings yet? I've still got some Amsteel already cut to size if you wanna have a play. Whoopies just make it easy as cake to adjust the hang without having to faff about with knots. ATB, Mike

      +Fergs uK Thanks Mike, I got some webbing and 4 steel rings so want to try that first, I'm not sure what will suit me yet and later may try the whoopies so will let you know, ATB, Damian.

    What material are you using for the char cloth, it should really take after one or two strikes? I use cheap tshirts from Primark and they usually take with the first spark that lands. Enjoy your vids, keep em up please for the armchair campers like myself!

    • @Fell_Wanderer
      @Fell_Wanderer  8 лет назад

      +Bushcraft1974 I use cotton from old clothes to make charcloth, I usually get the char to catch after a couple of strikes so maybe it was a little damp or something. Thanks for the comment, Damian
