That 1st album is still my favourite. You must follow their albums chronologically. No 2 is equally as good. Happy Journey through the music I matured with.
Jimmy Page paid for the production of this first album out of his own pocket, he recorded and mixed the entire album in 36 hours. So instead of seeking a record contract based on demos, and the record label paying to produce an actual album, Jimmy and manager Peter Grant had all the power when negotiating a contract with Atlantic records. Based on the strength of their album Led Zeppelin signed a contract that gave them complete and total artistic control of their music, their album art and packaging, use of their images for marketing... everything. That kind deal was unheard of in the era where the studios controlled much of the creative process, and all of the marketing and promotion. No other band could have said, "we aren't going to release singles, or go on TV shows, or do interviews... our albums won't have our pictures on the covers, or the name of the album, or even the name of the band!... you can't tell us what to record, how to look, or what to say". And the reason they were able to call all the shots was because they were Led Zeppelin, and because Atlantic records were smart enough to realize that they were the greatest band of all time... just get out of Jimmy's way and let them do whatever they want.
Hard To believe that for kids who knew each other for three weeks to put together this album and 36 hours and it be as great as it is, it shows pure pure talent😊
It depends on a persons taste in music. I have listened to Led Zeppelin for over 40+ years, have all their albums & i have to say they're not my fave band. I appreciate them very much & see the genius. However, with other bands including Pink Floyd, Rush, Queen & many others (including the Beatles! 🙂) .. Led Zeppelin i would state are among the top historical bands but not the number one in my opinion. Again, its an individuals taste & opinion. 🇬🇧
For me personally, I totally agree! LZ is the best ever. So much more energy and passion than the Beatles, Stones, Pink Floyd, etc. It is subjective, of course:)
I cannot tell you how awesome your reactions are. I’m probably close to your age but I’ve always been into this kind of music. Your reactions are like rediscovering them. I know LZ and the Beatles inside and out, hope you continue to do more Beatles stuff too. I’ll watch it all.
Jimmy Page is a musical genius. Led Zeppelin was COMPLETELY his brainchild. He did....and still does....control EVERY aspect of the Led Zeppelin legacy. Finished product ALWAYS ran through Jimmy.
This really is the very best way to introduce yourself to great bands, especially bands like the ones you're concentrating on, who worked in the days of true Album Rock. Back in those days, it was standard practice to buy the new albums from your favorite bands, then sit down and track them, top to bottom. You're spot-on, Zay, when you talk about this being a pretty earth-shattering debut album. They sounded so seasoned as musicians because all of them had been playing in bands and in studios for several years before they came together to form LedZep. The first time Jimmy Page and John Bonham played together was on a song by a guy named Donovan called "Hurdy-Gurdy Man". It's a pretty weird little song, and you would probably get a kick out of it. As always, I will remind you of King Crimson. I hope I don't sound like I'm nagging you, but there is great music to be found there. And if you're looking for a monumental first album, you need look no further than "In the Court of the Crimson King" which is their first album, released in 1969.
A great first album from this same era is the debut album from the Allman Brothers Band. The last song, Whipping Post, is one of their signature songs that more than holds its own today. And the second to the last song, Dreams, is a personal favorite of mine. What a way to end your first effort......
I love you guys reacting to old Zeppelin! The blues rock of the late 60s/early 70s had an amazing sound! If you like that genre, check out Jethro Tull's FIRST album! I guarantee you, it's nothing like their later works (not that those aren't also amazing!), but you will be amazed! Even their second album is similar. This is a band that evolved and changed genres several times...from jazz and blues rock, to hard rock, to folk rock, to progresdive rock, and back around to hard rock! And they have two coninuous-play albums as well! While live versions of their early work are awesome, check out the studio ones first. Like Zeppelin, they are British (they came out of a working class town called Blackpool. Check 'em out!
Have to totally agree with you...What a fantastic alum and as far as the last song is concerned I told you it was my fav. and is also my alltime Zep fav. song.
To my ears, LZ1 is the last Yardbirds album, but that doesn't diminish its power. LZ2 has traces and echoes of the Yardbirds but moves into new territory, and LZ3 is pure Zep. Anyone else hear it that way?
Can't wait for the next marathon! I vote for Rush, if you're forcing me to make a choice. Because, really, there's about 20 bands I can think of just off the top of my head that I'd be interested to see you cover in this format.
25 years later they got back together for one show 40,000 tickets were sold but over 20 million applied the show was called celebration day check them out doing Kashmir. I believe it is one of there greatest performances you won't be disappointed Jason Bonham filling in for his dad on drums the great John Bonham RIP my brother.
Actually....you're onto something. I'm thinking about all the first albums from great bands....and they are all just a little....unpolished and don't necessarily reflect where the band would end up musically. Not so with Zeppelin. They came out a fully formed, polished rock and roll machine. And they continued that to the end. FYI....Yes and Rush first efforts are strong. Rush's especially rocks raw!!
Bearing on my earlier comment (concerning Jethro Tull's early works), the more I think about the more I'm pretty sure you'd likely enjoy the second album (Stand Up) more than the first (This Was). It's generally more bluesy, whereas the first is a bit more jazzy. Just a thought if you intend to go listening. Keep on rockin', fellas!
Page and Jones were well seasoned studio players and had played on multiple hit records as studio player when they formed LZ. Plant and Bonham were in club bands when Page tapped them for the band.. If I remember correctly there was some tension between Page and Bonham when recording Zeppelin 1. Bonham didn't like what Page wanted him to do on a couple songs and thought about quiting the band until Jones (I think) told him to relax and just trust Jimmy's experience
Jimmy Page was a long time session musician for 7-8 years before this album came out. He also was the guitarist for The Yardbirds, who also spawned Eric Clapton and Jeff Beck.
Man, I love Rush and have seen them in concert 6 or 7 times, but they only have 2 albums that I would recommend reacting to song-by-song; 2112, for which you must listen to all of side 1 in one reaction, and Moving Pictures which you can do one song at a time. Pink Floyd: Dark Side of the Moon, full album in one sitting, same goes for The Wall. You could do song-by-song for Wish You Were Here. Boston: their self-titled debut album. Van Halen: their self-titled debut album. Led Zeppelin is the only band I would listen to every album, every song.
@@charlesgervais4673 One time I saw Rush at Nassau Colissium in Long Island NY and the only tickets we could get were behind the stage , so we got them and were sitting directly behind Neil Peart. It was unreal, I saw every hit he made on the drums.

No, the name comes from back in the day when Jimmy helped his friend Jeff Beck create his song "Beck's Bolero" before Zep was created. The song also included musicians Keith Moon, Nicky Hopkins and John Paul Jones. The session went to well, they all sort of half joking/half serious contemplated starting their own group together, and, depending on who tells the story, either Keith Moon or John Entwistle said it would go over like a "lead balloon" and the comment was made, no, like a lead Zeppelin. Jimmy remembered the comment and used it for the name of his new band after The Yardbirds folded.
I'm glad you're listening to the Zeppelin albums in order, the later albums sound a bit different, Still just as good, but a different Zeppelin sound. I think Zeppelin is the only rock band I can honestly say that there is not a song I don't like.. The only band that even comes close for me is the Beatles.

Definitely on the short list of all time debut albums. Led Zeppelin II is just as iconic.
That 1st album is still my favourite. You must follow their albums chronologically. No 2 is equally as good. Happy Journey through the music I matured with.
I second that, it's a must to follow them chronologically.
