    Come on people, are you telling me that Temple of Doom does not have the best Indy villain (Mola Ram) and the best sequence (the bridge scene)? Raiders has the romance (OK and the truck scene which is awesome), Crusade has the father-son relationship. Every movie from the trilogy has something to contribute to the Indy lore. All three are classics.

    I feel like this film is very underrated and slightly misunderstood.. kudos To Spielberg for not just remaking Raiders . He had the great idea to make a completely different film with the same character and i loved it. yes its darker and a little hokey buts its a masterpiece. The opening sequence in the club is brilliant.

      Actually it was George Lucas who had the idea for this darker toned film without Nazis and to go in a different direction , Spielberg did not agree with it. @Bobby Papoutsis Amazing? Most definitely not. Temple of Doom is a mess, with none of the atmosphere or emotional depth or sense of mystery or characterisation of the original (but with, admittedly, some amazing special effects). And while Last Crusade benefits from a better, more befitting of the original, story, and a winning performance from Sean Connery, whose interactions with Ford made the movie, it was, to me, an overall uninteresting adventure. Doom was terrible. Crusade was ok, but why bother with ok when the original sparkles with brilliance.

    The original was the classic. Just everything about it worked. The Last Crusade was the action packed, fun one that had that epic feel to it. Personally I think Temple of doom was the best of the sequels, I loved that it was very different from the first movie and in my opinion thats how the series should have been, a different adventure each time, I feel that Last crusade felt too much like the first movie and was actually kind of boring and overrated.

    • @capnhawkins
      @capnhawkins 5 лет назад +4

      @ANTMAN It really is, and it's actually remarkable just how many similarities there are, even down to the smallest things:
      1. At the beginning, Indy finds something irrelevant to the later plot and has it taken away by a rival.
      2. Indy teaches his class of adoring girls. He is then visited by Marcus and speaks to him regarding the artifact at the beginning.
      3. Indy and a companion discover a large artifact underground in the middle of the film.
      4. Main adversary allies himself with the Nazis and claims to be only using the Nazis for his own ends.
      5. Elaborate action scene through the desert aboard a Nazi vehicle, where a Nazi adversary gives Indy a run for his money but ends up getting his head smashed in repeatedly by Indy (in the EXACT same way) and being killed by the vehicle.
      6. Climax with antagonists getting their hands on the prize, but being vanquished by its power. Prize causes the rapid decay of an antagonist's face.
      But there are enough differences to make The Last Crusade a stand-alone film. For example, Indy's love interest is in league with the bad guys and ends up dying, the presence of Indy's father creates a new dynamic, and there's the whole sequence with the grail challenges and the drinking from the grail. But the film is still so similar to Raiders, and it would've been nice to see something as original as Temple of Doom.

      In my opinion that was the whole problem with Temple of Doom. It didn't feel enough like an Indy film, it's overly dark, takes place in one setting and the only woman is an annoying gold digger who does nothing but scream at the top of her lungs.

    • @mkocel
      @mkocel 4 года назад +1

      Temple is the only movie where indy actually fights the villain in the end and its not magically wrapped up by the mcguffin killing off all the bad guys. Last crusade seemed great at the time, but looking back now it seems like a bit of copy paste of raiders with some decent wrapping. Not a great film as i once thought. But Temple of Doom? STILL AMAZING

    Loved it as a kid, and still love it today. Gripes about the darker tone, I've never understood. I just found it fitting as one of Indy's adventures. Well, I always ask why Crystal Skull gets such hate and I say I don't get it.
    We can have opinions and all but we have to admit, It's just an Indy film. It's adventure, it's excitement, it's mystery, it's history. It's the core of what cinema was and no amount of Nazi Melting Arks, Heart Ripping Priests, Wound Healing Grails, and Crystal Skulls should make you go "That was stupid. I do not believe in that."
    Don't believe. Just enjoy.

    • @nucleardeath07
      @nucleardeath07 10 лет назад +9

      For me it was the over use of obvious CGI that didn't go with the prior films and at points were stupid. Like swinging on the vines with the monkeys, the jungle car chase, the alien. The parts I like such as the motorcycle chase at the beginning I very much enjoyed, it felt like a true Indy chase scene. If they would have did more of the movie like that and used CGI less it would have been better. But Lucas seems incapable of making a movie now unless he can sit in a studio with a coffee in front of a blue screen.

    • @SomeHarbourBastard
      @SomeHarbourBastard 10 лет назад

      nucleardeath07 What can I say? The guy likes to have an unlimited canvas. Even the best practical effects still have their limits. With CGI however, absolutely anything goes.

    • @nucleardeath07
      @nucleardeath07 10 лет назад +3

      Yes but he did a great job with practical effects before. In fact the best moments of Indiana Jones are done with practical effects and are what make it memorial (the boulder scene from the first, the mine cart from the second). CGI is fine when done right but he should have not relied so heavily on it as it just doesn't feel like the same movie

    Temple Of Doom was meant to be even darker according to its original working title of "The Temple Of Death". but script and novel wise alot was cut out of this film.
    - Mola Ram's original introduction according to even the children's storybook based on the film was in the palace court yard where Indy was showing the maharajah his bullwhip! (he was a hidden dark figure watching on apparently)
    - Indy under the effects of the Black Kali sleep visited the imprisoned Willie and nearly attempted to rape her (according to the novel) or at the very least FORCE himself on her briefly.
    - Shortround figured how to get Indy out of the 'Black Sleep' by seeing a guard being hit by the volcanic lava's steam and being burned slightly. (A well documented deleted scene most fans are awares of!) while he was prisoner in the mines with the children.
    Other than that though, excellent review as always Ollie. Gave you a thumbs up!

    I guess I saw The Last Crusade (my favorite of all films) at a critical moment in my life. It was my senior year in college, and I had just come back from studying abroad in Madagascar and Senegal. That time spent overseas changed my life perspective. I wanted to improve my French, and learn other languages. I developed a new found appreciation for history, religion, international affairs, archeology, world literature and world music. But most of all, I wanted to be who Indiana Jones was describing when he told the bad guys that they will never find Marcus Brody. "He speaks a dozen languages, knows every local custom, he'll blend in, disappear, you'll never see him again." That scene sent chills down my spine, because that's the kind of person I wanted to be. I signed up for the Peace Corps right after I saw this movie!!

      JuniorXEastNY It's a shame that all of what Indiana Jones claimed about Marcus turned out to be hilariously false. As I am sure you are aware, that very next scene features a clearly uncultured Marcus confused as hell asking for anyone who could speak English! XD

      Last Crusade is the most family friendly fluff. The only people who don't like Temple of Doom are chicken shits who are scared of horror movies. Look I'm not hugely into horror movies, but in this case the horror upped the stakes which makes Temple of Doom the greatest in the series. Raiders is to slow paced and boring at times. Temple of Doom had the best quick pacing and the pacing is on par to a Michael Bay movie a decade before Michael Bay appeared with the high octane blockbuster movie. Temple of Doom had the most drama, the most at stake and the most energetic pacing. Like I said, those who don't like Temple of Doom JUST don't like it because they're simple minds can't handle the horror elements and they need to grow up.

    Its a great scene at the end after he's rescued the kids and brings them back to the village.
    Sometimes I miss the '80s. I was in my teens and I wasn't exactly happy as I was very unhappy at school but when I was that age I just seemed to enjoy things like movies more than I do as an adult. And there was a lot of great stuff to love in that decade.

    This is def. one of the better reviews I've seen of Temple of Doom and I completely agree with you. Though Raiders of the Lost Ark is my favorite Indy movie, I don't think Temple of Doom is nearly as bad as people want to make it out to be. Yeah it has its problems as you pointed out but it's also a fun action/adventure movie, and I respect that they attempted to do something different. I also don't think Willie was that bad, I actually found her pretty funny, and being a nigh club singer I think she reacted pretty appropriately to the situation she found herself in. It made her stand out from Marion from the previous film and create a different dynamic. Though I do enjoy the relationship between Indy and Marion a lot more.
    Also as good as Last Crusade was and it while it did a lot of it unique things, it also tried to mirror Raiders of the Lost Ark rather then really be something unique like Temple of Doom was. I also never really liked how Last Crusade turned Marcus and Sallah into comedic sidekicks when the first movie took them pretty seriously as characters. But I do love the relationship between Indy and his father though, but once again it's Raiders of the Lost Ark in a different skin and Raiders did it better.

    TOD IS THE BEST INDY MOVIE. People seem to forget its a PREQUEL, we get to see Indy BECOME Indy.
    As a kid, i didnt think i could BE Indiana Jones, but in short round, i could see myself as his best friend and sidekick. (Ethnicity and color meant nothing to me as a kid, the kid was a kid my age, and thats all that mattered)
    And my favorite part of the movie, the part that DEFINES INDIANA JONES, is when the whole movie rests on Short Round's shoulders and he saves Indy, Willie, and the whole movie, not once, but TWICE! But when he saves Indy the 1st time, and they have that father/son moment of forgiveness, then Willie says, "Indy lets get out of here" to which he replies, "RIGHT. ALL OF US" THATS FUCKING INDIANA JONES!!! THATS WHAT MADE HIM THE RIGHTEOUS HERO WE ALL KNOW AND LOVE! THAT'S WHERE INDY GOES FROM SELFISH, TO SELF-LESS. Followed directly right on track with the iconic Williams score and that silhouette of righteous Indy standing there defiantly ready to beat the shit out of the oppressors. THATS MY FUCKING INDIANA JONES!!!

    I love this movie. It is kind of the black sheep of the original 3 films, it's darker and doesn't exactly follow the template of Raiders or Last Crusade but on its own it has a ton of energy and imagination and is just ridiculously fun to watch. It's underrated.

    This movie isn't just the best in the series, it's the best by a wide margin, to the same extent that Empire Strikes Back is the best Star Wars film. There isn't 5 seconds of boredom in this entire movie. The music is superb, the set pieces in the Temple outstanding. The humor is on point, and the mine cart chase is one of the great special effects sequences in any action film. People who say this movie is below the level of Raiders and Last Crusade are nuts.

    I remember seeing this in the theater when I was a kid. What a spectacle this movie is from the very first (and Bond-like) opening scene. It goes right from that to a plane crash to a ride down a mountain and river, and then to the bulk of the movie. Just one huge spectacle after another, almost like a comic book movie.
    As a kid, I actually found this movie kind of scary and gross. Of course, I found Raiders scary at times too. Spielberg was always pushing the envelope, which is what made him the perfect PG-13 director. Despite her constant complaining, I think I liked Willie better than Marian simply because she was prettier and played the damsel in distress. Whereas, I appreciate Marian more now as an adult.
    This movie does not have the wonder and awe of the first movie, or the strong spirituality sitting just beneath the surface. It was spectacle for spectacle sake, and just pure entertainment.

This movie had every cool and fun adventure a kid could ask for, like Return of Jedi Too, gotta understand, favoritism came with the age. I think the movie was geared towards a younger audience even though it had its darker moments. From Shortround to the inflatable raft out of the plane to the snowy mountain into the river to the railcar ride. I enjoyed it at 5, I enjoy it know with the kids who consider it their fav as well. It just hits its mark with the young.

    I've never understood the negativity for this film. It's the closest any of the films got to (brilliantly) recreating what George initially envisioned for the franchise in terms of homaging the serials of the 1930s. The nightclub scene, the dinghy out of a plane, the crushing spike room, the minecar chase, the ropebridge encounter.. All done with equal amounts of humour and a genuine sense of threat. Talk about a perfect mix of adventure, fun and danger! It also has my favourite piece of Indy music (6:52).

    If you feel revisiting a movie it means that it's actually a good content that it's worth rewatching. The trilogy has that magic. I can endlessly watch those movies because of the story, music, locations, the emotions the scenes and the characters provide. Temple of doom is actually my favourite because it is an endless ride, the music is a masterpiece.

    The arcade game holds a special place in my heart as one of the first arcade games I played that had an ending. If you put two quarters in, you got 7 lives, which was usually enough for me to get to the rope bridge and defeat Mola Ram before starting again on a harder difficulty. I played the hell out of that game.

    It's a shame fans didn't like "Temple" more (it's my second favorite and my daughter's favorite). The original intention was for each movie to cover a different sub-genre of adventure films (part 3 was originally going to be a Haunted House movie), but after fan complaints, Lucas and Spielberg decided to go the safe route and just recycle "Raiders" for part 3 and 4. Such a shame.

    Okay. So the effects of the Blood of the Kali can be broken by being burned, yet they leave Indy in a room full of burning candles. Is it just me or does anyone else think that maybe they should have left him in a room with streaming water or waterfalls instead? This just seems like a significant inattention to detail to me.

    Temple of Doom was my introduction to Indiana Jones and made me love the character. I was very little though but surprisingly handled the 'heavy' content quite well. It just kept me investigated the entire time. And it is lovely how this movie is véry different to Raiders, yet has this familiair aura around it. Same charm, same adventurous feeling. Yes, this is a bit more cruel and macabre, but I love it for it!
    I have no favorite Indiana Jones, all 3 classics are wonderfull and have their individual charm. But I have to say Temple has the most memorable moments of all movies.
    Raiders has the openings sequence and the elimination of the Nazi's (éspecially the main 3 antagonists deaths!)
    Temple has the openings sequence, the Indian banquet, the Kali sacrifice with the heart, the mine chase sequence, Indies trance....overload!!!
    Crusade has actually one scene that gave me nightmares and you already can guess what that would be: Donovan's demise! Hóly shizballs, he not only ages rápidly but also starts decomposing while being alive! 'He chose...poorly' NO SHIZ SHERLOCK XD
    It made me shit my pants, and this is after seing the face melt and head exploding/shrinking from Raiders!
    Crystal Skull is my least, YET I found not at all bad. Not as bad as everybody claims it to be. Seriously, when it comes to sequels in franchises, I've seen waaayyy worse than Crystal Skull.

    Steven Spielberg said that he did not enjoy this film as much as the rest of the Indiana Jones films, but said that it was a great experience for him, because he met his future wife, Kate Capshaw, during the production of this movie.
    The "chilled monkey brains" were made from custard and raspberry sauce.
    The "giant vampire bats" that are shown in the movie, were actually fruit bats. Vampire bats are a lot smaller.
    According to some sources, Harrison Ford was not entirely comfortable with the film's story and not entirely happy with how the film turned out.
    In the original draft, there was supposed to be a motorcycle chase scene across the Great Wall of China. However, the Chinese government refused to grant the permission of filming.
    The three main characters are named after dogs. Short Round was named after screenwriter Willard Huyck's dog, which was named after the orphan in The Steel Helmet (1951). Willie was named after Steven Spielberg's dog and Indiana was named after George Lucas' dog.
    Kate Capshaw had to be taught how to scream.
    As he knew that he would spend a large portion of film shirtless, Harrison Ford underwent a strict weightlifting regimen to prepare for the film. In an interview on the DVD release, he credits being in such good shape for his quick recovery from a back injury while filming.
    Kate Capshaw was thrilled at the opportunity of singing and dancing in the opening musical number, but her dress was so tight there was very little movement she could attempt without ripping it.
    Willie Scott (Kate Capshaw) screams a grand total of 71 times throughout the movie.
    For the bug chamber sequence, Kate Capshaw was really covered with over two thousand insects. She took sedatives prior to the scene to get over her initial fear, and claimed "they definitely worked".
    There was a scene involving Kate Capshaw and a rather large snake which had to be cut, as Capshaw was having panic attacks at the very prospect of it. Steven Spielberg jokingly says that the only reason Kate married him later was because he allowed the scene to be cut.
    The nightclub in the opening scene is called Club Obi-Wan, an homage to the Star Wars character.
    Kate Capshaw received a black eye in the runaway mine cart sequence. The next day when she reported to work, everybody else on the set was wearing a black smudge under their eye.

    Raiders will be always my favourite, being temple of the doom the second best of the only one and true original trilogy. It’s quite disturbing in some parts (chopped fingers and arms hanging from statues for example) but I appreciate the effort of Lucas & Spielberg to not repeat the formula of Raiders, and aiming for something a little bit different.
    The Last Crusade will always be my third choice. As good as is the interaction between Harrison and Connery, obviously tried to repeat the formula of Raiders, with natural lesser results.

      Situations103 Nahh, it can't hold a candle to Raiders. Maybe if you like darker, more violent films, but Short Round and the annoying girlfriend in this one was just too much for me. The story of Raiders is amazing and the special effects were much better IMO. Those melting faces! Temple of Doom is still fun though.

    • @dennett316
      @dennett316 9 лет назад +1

      Situations103 Not the best, but certainly not bad. The only issue for me is the stereotyping, but as was said in the video, that rather apes the old serials the series is based on, so it's a minor issue.
      Great set pieces, great looking film, great mix of dark elements and humour...it's the weakest of the original trilogy for me, but that's by no means bad.
