If you’re ever in New York City, Nicks mosaic murals are amazing! They were incorporated in the new addition bridging Bryant Park and Times Square subway stations into a hub and converging multiple train lines for easier access. His work spans at least 3 separate walls. I had no idea who Nick Cave was, and came across these mosaics by accident. Blew my mind. Had to know more about him.
His "suit" works are his residual ancestral memories of "Egungun masks" (from a Yoruba and Benin context). He doesn't realize he's unconsciously referencing sacred West Afrikan Ancestral masquerade ritual pieces. The multicoloured raffia looking suits are similar to the Bobo masks in Burkina Faso...
He realizes perfectly well that he is working in the traditions of African art and the art of the diaspora. He is educated, he is an artist and professor, he has, you know, been to museums. He knows what he is doing.

One of my most favorite art exhibitions was Nick Cave's work in Denver. It was many years ago and I keep my eyes open in hopes to see it again.
I absolutely love Nick Cave's work. Completely jealous you had this opportunity.
