    The musical genius of these people is amazing. This is confirmed by this song, which effectively ends an equally great album. The melodies they created in their songs have always given me goosebumps and moved me to another dimension when I closed my eyes, but what they did in this song is indescribable. I'm not a guitarist but I watch your channel because you beautifully show the phenomenon of Iron Maiden music. Thank you Nicko! Hats off.

      Iron Maiden think outside the box of "two verse- lead break final verse" - they are longtime free of that "cage". And they are masters of creating beautiful-sounding lead harmonies and powerful galloping rhythms. Their genius is indeed amazing!

  • @OldGuitarMan
    @OldGuitarMan Год назад +37

    For me, they're some of the best lyrics Steve has written, his usual odd English language syntax choices notwithstanding. There's so much to interpret from them, in both a personal and a general humanity type of way - as well as the aspects that hit us straight through the heart from our own life experiences. We're, most of us, not chasing "Wildest Dreams" anymore. We're older, altered by time and experience, damaged in ways, and our world has become the dragon of chaos, an almost surreal nightmare in a lot of respects.
    The song is powerful. It holds you to the wall and presses the breath out of you.
    The guitar melody that foreshadows the first lyrics verse ("beginning of a sunrise bores a big hole in the sky...") is, to me, ridiculously emotional - just how the melody and the backing chords somehow create out of whole cloth a sound the evokes emotion from the human brain, like any type of great art is capable of. And when Bruce comes in singing with the melody in his lower-mid "When the Wild Wind Blows" register, it's just beautiful - but in a melancholic, sorrowful way. The whole song is like that: full of melancholy and regret, the observations of an old(er) man surveying his life and the state of the world - all he and we have been, all he and we have seen, and how all of that life is now lost to whatever the nothing and the madness we have now is.
    It's extremely moving for this old man. What we lose personally - how the vitality of life bleeds out more and more with each passing year - how the world we once knew is gone, and as the chaos storms around us all that's left is to remember a life and a time we can never have again:
    ...a time when every person and every aspect of life wasn't obligated to take one or another extremist viewpoint and stay lost - lost in all this anger, lost in what has become hell on earth.

    • @LicksOfTheBeast
      @LicksOfTheBeast  Год назад +6

      The lyrics are definitely profound and I think they add to the melancholic feeling.
      "...And the voices in your head now are thinking of a lifetime you can never feel again" That is one of many lines that just cuts so deep!

    • @OldGuitarMan
      @OldGuitarMan Год назад +3

      @@LicksOfTheBeast Yes, that whole section combined with the "I wish I could go back/we'll never be the same again" sentiment in the chorus is so darkly powerful. I know Steve is largely writing about humanity's atrocities, about war, about the cost all nations pay for becoming what they become, etc. But I also read into it him personally, as a 60-something-year-old man, writing about his own life experiences, the world and life he's seen change over that span.
      I certainly overlay those emotions over my own life experiences when I hear those lines and it makes the song resonate in a ridiculously deep way with me.
      We all love to make Iron Maiden lists and, FWIW, I've gotta say that "Hell on Earth" has wedged its way into the bottom half of my all-time Top 10 Iron Maiden songs.
      Another great video, Nico.

    This is my favorite song on Senjutsu. I have given an unhealthy amount of thought to how this song may have been written. Steve is the only one with writing credits. I would pay to see how he explained his vision for this song to the rest of the band. Those organic solos have always stood out to me as showcasing the absolutely essence of each guitarist. And I have got to know if Steve came up with the melody after Adrian’s solo and explained it, or if Adrian came up with it. It’s my favorite part of the song along with Bruce’s “Love in anger; life in danger.” That fade at the end of the song is so emotionally powerful. It actually feels like the band took you on an 11 minute 18 second journey, and then just vanished. And you’re sitting there when it all stops…sad…

    • @LicksOfTheBeast
      @LicksOfTheBeast  Год назад +7

      You know, if I ever have the exceptionally good fortune of interviewing one of the guys in the band, that is a question I will ask about a few songs because it would truly be a wonderful thing to be able to get a glimpse of the process as a whole. Different bands go about it in all sorts of ways, but with Maiden I notice that songs written by Steve alone seem to have a very different structure and overall melodic sense where bits of the main melodic theme tends to repeat into other melodies... Again, very much like a movie score 😊
      So my guess is this was all him and he did his thing where he whistles the melodies and everyone articulates it with their own touch and idiosyncrasies on the instrument.
      As for the sadness that lingers, I think the might be exactly the brilliance of the suspended arpeggio at the end. It feels like an intro (like Moonchild) and it is in this song... When they bring it back at the end and fade it out, you're left with that "...so, what now?" Kinda feeling.
      And that's where you play the song again. And again. Aaaaand again 😅

      @@LicksOfTheBeast Yes!!!! For me, it’s funny how when the song ends, I have this weird moment of processing what I just heard…just frozen there. And then, even though I know I’m going to replay it again and again (like you said), I still always have that moment, first, where it’s like Rose in the Titanic watching the lifeboats going away from her and she says, “Come back! Come back!!” 😂 I’m pretty sure Steve knew exactly what he was doing!!! 😊

      @@LicksOfTheBeast I've noticed on many of the songs where Steve is listed as the sole songwriter, Janick is the one playing the melodic guitar parts. No More Lies and Dance of Death, come to mind. I'd love to know if those are parts Steve wrote and Janick plays or if they are Janick's ideas. Along these lines, if a guitar is doubling the vocal melody, it's pretty much always Janick as well.

      I think janick plays and Steve writes. I’ve wondered many times why it’s now always janick and Adrian harmonising the octaves with Dave playing rhythm, and I think it’s because of Janick’s picking style and phrasing. Despite his wild solos, he is very gentle with and respectful with these melody lines and doesn’t overdo vibrato, and this style and tone manages to work in perfectly with Bruce’s vocal.

The sound, the feel, the nuances and obviously your own talent as a guitarist. Congrats for you content. I really hope your channel is somehow seen by the band, its just fantastic.

    One of my favourites from this album. Bruce's vocals on the "Love in anger, life in danger" lines just absolutely nail this song followed up by those super cool chords and Janik's solo are epic.

    Now I have to listen to this song like 4 times in a row to catch even more details that I had the hundred times I listen to it before, specially because it´s one of my 10 years old daughter favorites. I got to say, I´m glad you did this. When you first review this song as part of the whole album, and that was one of the first videos I saw from you, you didn´t gave to much credit, but the again, this song has a lot they have done before, but then again, with many details that make the song quite a good journey with the cinematic flare that thy have come to master so well. I really enjoy the video, since I´m not a guitar player, I love this brake downs, even if some parts about notes got lost to me. Once again thank you very much end I hope you continue doing this, I´m sure you will.

      Oh yeah well when I am preparing to make these videos, I typically listen to the songs multiple times, slow things down, try to isolate stuff, pay attention to how things feel, how they make me feel etc etc - with multiple listens, your ears (or, more accurately, your brain) start picking up more and more details.
      Some of my favourite songs didn't start out that way... But usually if parts of song I thought was just okay start repeating in my head out of the blue, I know there is a lot more to it than I had initially thought... And then it's all over 😂
      Glad you enjoyed this video and your daughter obviously has great taste!!!
      Cheers 🤜🤛

      The first time I ever heard Maiden's music was when I downloaded a program from a BBS on my Commodore 64 that was entitled Iron Maiden just because I had seen their covers on people's jean jacket patches and t-shirts and was curious.
      It was a still image of the trooper cover with a full 8-bit version on Phantom of the Opera! 😂

    I finally had the time to watch this.
    I love all your videos but this type is by far my favourite for sure. 👌
    I'm probably wrong but to me this song felt like a kind of love song from Steve towards us, the fans. Sure, there are some dark and heavy themes in there but it makes me feel like we've got through( or getting through) all that together with him, with them.
    And the part especially when Bruce sings: " But when I leave this world I hope to see you all again. On the other side of hell on Earth. "
    It feels like a confession to me that he/ they love us so much we have not only taken this journey together through thick and thin but we will continue together even in the next world.
    That is so incredibly beautiful to me, it touches so deep.
    The beginning and the end to me feels different too from how you describe it. It feels like I'm wondering around in the fog and the music calls to me to follow it. It guides me into the unknown and even if I disappear from this world it will be alright because the music will guide me to something better.
    Probably sounds stupid, I know. But Maiden has got me through some dark times and continues to do so and this song feels like a warm hug and aknowlegdement.
    That even though we don't know each other we are connected.
    Sorry for the long rant.
    Thank you for your work and your time! You are wonderful! Have a nice evening and week! 👋

      A lot of how music is experienced is personal and songs like these are a bit ambiguous lyrically exactly so that everyone can get out of it that which they most need at any given time.

And that made me appreciate the rest of the album a lot more. Favourite Maiden album? Probably too high a bar but certainly now my favourite Maiden song.
    It is similar to Endlessness off the most recent Nightwish album. Both the closer. Both feel too short but feel like they go on forever. And the fading out endings give a feeling that we'll never hear this band again (with Nightwish it was never hearing Marko again). Both in typical Maiden and Nightwish style. The only two bands to ever take me on such journeys.
