I miss the synth parts in this great video. They played live with guitar synths on the Somewhere On Tout in 86/87 and this song was just beautiful with them
After your channel, I don't feel like a stranger anymore, having Somewhere in Time as my favorite album, going against all my friends from back in the day. I know a lot of guys here also feel the same.
jusr about my favorite Maiden song. Love every part of this song , from start to finish and every part in between. Nico you do such a masterful cover of this song.
My first Maiden concert, Killers tour, I grabbed the fence, front row right in front of me all gig long Adrian was there just feet from me. Between songs I yelled "Alright Adrian" and he acknowledged me with a look up and a nod of his head. Ever since then he was my favorite player in Maiden. Then when NOTB came out and I saw he had writing credits and The Prisoner was his main contribution on the album and it kicked ass I have been a fan of his writing ever since. So every song on a Maiden album that Adrian contributes is special in my eyes and especially in my ears. Cheers Nico! Up The Irons!
This is one of the songs on Somewhere in Time that I sometimes forget about, but then, like you say, that volume swells and I remember the brilliance. Your videos are just getting better and better though Nico. Loved the Stones interlude, even though I'm not much of a Stones fan 🤣🤣
Such a gorgeous song. It really brings out how versatile as musicians Maiden's members are, too. Thanks for the awesome analysis and giving the song a new life for us!
Holy crap, I recently found your channel. I can't believe someone got as technical with Maiden as me and my friends did many years ago. You are awesome! I still remember that first time I saw that video....
Awesome breakdown Nico, so nice to be able to learn it properly. This song is always my first go to when I am playing my Gallien Krueger 250ML, it just works so perfectly with the amp.
Excellent lesson on a song that is in my life’s playlist! Great to see you dissect it so professionally and with ease. Makes me want to play the info right now correctly! The wife will not appreciate that lol, so onward to tomorrow!
Another solid breakdown of a Maiden classic. Your enthusiasm and the quality of song transcription make this a really engaging channel for Maidenheads & guitarists alike. Nice one!
Congratulations, a very nice job of knowing how the songs are composed and the purpose of each arrangement. This LP is perhaps one of Maiden's best and most forgotten, only relegated to a single song, Wasted Years. In my humble opinion, it's a live LP from start to finish. Thank you so much.
As usual, fantastic work. I also love the alternative version of the lick at the 12:30 mark (the very Smith one), that Adrian played in the reunion tour in 99 where he had a way more melancholic approach to the lick.
Hello Nicko, great video as always! I like that You pay attention to blues influences (bluesy chorus was hillarious : )) Also there is something magical when Adrian ends his solo on note lower note than You would expect (same thing in his solo for 'heaven can wait'). I have some ideas for videos, maybe You would find them cool ; ) 1. Songs where originally were 2 guitar parts/harmonies but amigos (mostly Adrian) make them 3 guitar parts (like 'trooper', 'phantom') And similar: 2. Songs with 3 (or more like 'flash of the blade') guitars parts originally but they can play them fully with current line-up (like seventh son) 3. Songs with 2 guitar harmonies which they still play this way (or never played before but would sound awesome) but would be interesting with adding different 3rd guitar part (like 'iron maiden') 4. Parts with additional part in original but they don't play it that way for some reason (like the very end of 'the evil that man do' solo). I know that's a lot but I believe You will find some of those ideas interesting : D I admire Your work. Keep rockin' !
Awesome man, one of the best Maiden songs, from a top 3 Maiden album to me. Smith's solo in this is absolutely beautiful, pure feel and melody. I'm looking at getting back into playing guitar this year (I'm a bass player mainly) and these vids will help me a lot. Thanks man 👍🏻
It's great that you're doing that and I'm glad these vids will be helpful! 😃 I'm doing the inverse... Started to practice bass a little every day lately. It's like taking multiple steps back and I'm loving that!
Man you are the Wizard of Metal \m/ Brilliant break down of a classic track. Thank you so much for all your awesome work. Would love to see a lesson on how to you tackle songs as a band when playing live
Ah man thank you so so much!! I do have a video planned for some discussion about how our band operates that I hope will be helpful to people interested in joining or starting a band. Should be out later this year 😃 Cheers!
Great job. Nico, thanks for the detailed analysis of my favorite song! Great video format. More videos with analysis of songs in this format. Good luck!
Somewhere in Time was the second studio album I experienced being released, but the two year wait between Powerslave and Somewhere in time was torture and felts like ten years and not two. Possibly because I was just 14. Great video, Nico.
The video makes my brain bleed. When I learn a song to record it, I end up eventually hating the song because of the weeks and months of listening and playing to it 100s of times. But this. This! This is like a surgeon pulling apart nuances even the band probably doesn’t remember. Nico can probably tell what color of pick Adrian was using, what shoes Steve was wearing in the studio. This is nonetheless another great, maddeningly detailed, inspiring video as always, LITB. But I will say this. You get yourself one of those blue Fender Steve signature basses they had out maybe 10-15 years ago. We won’t let this oversight slide forever ;D
Hahaha well I tend to obsess over this band a fair bit. But I also take a closer look at the songs when I'm prepping for a video like this so I do study them a little more in depth first. It's definitely a lot of work! Now for the bass... I'm actually really happy with this Classic Vibe! Especially the neck and the looks with the walnut finish and thick fret markers... It looks so '70s, which I love! And it's inspiring me to practice a bit every day. Perhaps once I can play the parts like Steve, I might consider getting one of his signatures too 😉 Cheers my friend! 🤜🤛
Thank you as always for this very insightful playthrough. Most interesting! This is without any doubt my personal favourite Maiden track and perhaps my most favourite song of all time. I am looking forward to the upcoming tour and hope they will play SIASL live on stage after so many Years. That groove, that Riff... Cheers and kind regards from germany. Up the Irons
I still remember when the cassette in the late 80s. It became my favorite. Can't wait to see them in San Antonio this year.

Thank you! Awesome video, as always! I'm a bit stuck in the fast notes of the 3rd part of the solo, any tip on how to play that Adrian's trademark lick at speed?
Thanks!! Make sure you downpick the first note (1st string 12th fret), the 3rd string 14th fret and the one with the bend. The others should be upstrokes. Work on that slowly until it feels good and after that it should go a lot smoother 🙂
Thank you for this. I picked up the bass at 15. I’m 50. Learning guitar. This will be my first solo. Glad you broke it into four parts. Awesome tune and I love your channel. Up the Irons 🎸🎶🤘❤️
Hey that's really cool! I'm very much in the same boat as you as I've started to work a lot more on my bass playing after all these years playing guitar 😃
Great stuff, one of their best songs. Also, Adrian's signature guitar just looks so good.. white body, black hardware and scratch plate, maple neck. Perfect.
Awesome song and great analysis. I m so lucky to have been able to witness that masterpiece live in Québec gig Summer 1999. I think Adrian used a Flying V... If i want to show Maiden to somebody that doesn t know the band, I make them listen to the instrumental part of Stranger 👍 I read that Maiden were exausted for the filming of the video clip in 1986 because it was done after one of the two shows in Sheffield England
Yeah I rember he was playing a King V for a little while. Cool guitar! Back in the 80s, they really overdid it so much, it's an absolute miracle that they didn't burn themselves out completely!
@@LicksOfTheBeast He really played a King V? That's wild. I could see him played a Kelly since it's close to a Destroyer. It's like when Hetfield used a Rhoads for a bit.
You said all right from the open. "masterful composition, love everything about this". Bruce's vocal performance on this track is equally as brilliant his bandmates. A timeless classic, though it will always be a depth track. Maiden fans know what's up. Great breakdown!

The solo in this song always stood out to me more than any other of Maiden's with the exception of the Powerslave solo at the 3 minute mark. I always like your Maiden analysis videos. Personally, the best albums are Peace of Mind, Powerslave, Somewhere in Time and 7th Son of A 7th Son, with the unique best lineup - Dave, Adrian, Nicko, Steve and Bruce. I equally love every song of these albums. BTW - Other albums/lineups are good too. It's Maiden, not an ordinary band.
I'm really happy that you're enjoying it!! And for the record, I don't think it's "wrong" to play a riff how you hear it, or how you like playing it. I will use the term "wrong"in video titles occasionally because it's an attention-grabbing term but really, people develop entire styles by learning things incorrectly, and there is value in that! It's just fun to pick apart the details and subtleties as fans of the original music 🙂 Cheers!
`My tooth hurts´ - Stranger in a strange land 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣, and I love the unexpected Rolling Stones´ touch. Wonderful detailed anaylisis Nico, I have learned a lot from this song, it has not the typical Maiden playing and structure is known for, Adrian adds that different special flavour that complements the band´s sound.

Somewhere in Time is a timeless masterpiece. I haven't stopped listening to this since I first bought the tape back in 86.
I have to agree!
This album is the apex of metal.
It was 90% Adrian
Peak Adrian. This song is a masterpiece on an already masterful album.
This Adrian's solo is really a masterpiece that gives me goosebumps every time I have the chance to listen to it again and again.......
i'm glad others feel that way too. this solo is just epic and touches the soul
Same!!
His solo is what got my 30 year old wife who likes top 40 fake country stuff into Maiden. She bought us tickets to see him play it next month.
This song has one of Maiden's best solos - thanks for analyzing this song.
Everytime I come across an official promo for the Future Past Tour, I turn up the volume and get chills.
A great break down of one of my favourite Iron maiden songs. I hope they play this song on the tour this summer. Cant wait to hear it live.
Can't wait to see the setlist!!
Yup.. except Yanick at libs at the end live and blunts it sadly
I miss the synth parts in this great video. They played live with guitar synths on the Somewhere On Tout in 86/87 and this song was just beautiful with them

I wore out my cassette tape listening to this song back in 86. Absolute magic. Thanks for playing through this.
Phenomenal video about my favourite Maiden song.I have tickets for the upcoming tour mostly because I have to hear Maiden play this song live!

That versatility is one of my favourite things about SIT. They did some really unusual things on those eight songs!
Excellent analysis, as always! Do not forget keyboards, their sound makes the song more intense, suspended in time. What a masterpiece!
Wow I am so happy to have you play my all time absolute favorite song out of my all time favorite album. Thank you

Love this song! Masterpiece! Brilliant! Adrian Smith in his finest!!
I´ve listended to that solo thousands of times, still gives me the creeps as if it was the first time... Adrian Smith will always be my favorite.
My favourite Maiden track along with Phantom Of The Opera
The most incredible thing about your breakdowns videos is to see a guitarist who know music theory! 😝 Joke aside, great video as always!
