I'm glad you talked about Beaux as she is another giant in that manner of painting. Her and Elizabeth Sparhawk-Jones were incredible and underrated imo.
Thanks for posting this video. Great analysis and in depth explanation on these portraits. I love both but the Beaux painting with that cat is exquisite. Grateful for whatever you paint!
this is the first video of yours that I have watched, and oh my god! i loved the way you explained, I appreciated the webcam because it made feel like a class, the way you navigated the painting dn moved through the parts to show what you are talking about, and the way you laid out your studying process! that was super insightful for me whenever I go to study a painting now!
Hi Chelsea, thank you for your sharing of knowledge and wisdom. I normally just forge ahead and think about it afterwards making all the mistake along the way. I am cautious also of the dry brush as I have not yet mastered this technique in any way that I am happy with. Whichever painting you choose I will be glad to view your video. Happy painting and thank you once again.
Hi Chelsea - nice to hear you and see you - I think a Zorn is on the cards for me soon 😃😃😍😍😎😎 and thats a hat band I think - I love the man with the cat. I am a cat lover of course but ther light on the face and the pops of red in the ear and nosril are just the best. Happy Painting - Paul
Parts of a hat are the brim the flat that shades the head, the crown the portion that covers the skull, hat band the decoration at the bottom of the crown and the crease how the hat is folded at the top of the crown this is the most individual part of the hat caused by the way the the owner takes it on and off. Inside the hat there is a lining that covers the inside of the crown and a sweat band to give stability to the base of the crown. Loved your video
I would love seeing you paint either one. But one thing I would really love to see you do is a really simplified study of each, in a reduced size, without a lot of detail...almost abstract or posterized.
hey chelsea, i personaly prefer the zorn one, but im realy in love with the red reflection of the trouser and the purple in the jacket colorwise from the beaux painting. it would be super nice to see that one greets
Hi Chelsea...I love Cecilia Beaux's painting. I'm curious about how you would do the mark making, which strokes come in what order, how you mix the colors and how you capture the fabric. I absolutely love the colors!
This really was a great go through how to study a Master piece . Your video's are always very educative and explained in a very 'understandable' way . I can't choose between the Zorn and the Beaux , both are very challenging to me in their own way . I wondered and think the type of brushes also are important to make the special brushstroke effects s.a for the dry brush , do you think /advice a smaler scale for the study would give the same 'feeling' and adequate learning proces ? Thanks for sharing so much in depth information !🙏
Thank you so much for your kind words, Debora! I'm absolutely going to keep these questions in mind. I think I'll probably turn this into a series, as there are quite a few things I can walk you all through to break down this study into baby steps, and I'll make absolutely certain to explore the brushes question once I get down to the brushwork! And after reading your comment, as well as a couple of others asking a similar question, I will plan on creating a video walking you through a small-scale color study too. :) PS If you ever want my help directly, please don't hesitate to book a free painting consult with me! bit.ly/3X8t8sS
Interesting and challenging task, I'd really like to see how you'll copy Cecilia Beaux's masterpiece! Also thanks for the input, I didn't know her until now!
It would be interesting to do a cropped version of just the hat & hands. I think it’s called a hat band? Great video! I’m inspired to do some master coping!
👋Hi Chelsea, I'd like to watch you paint Beaux's "Man with Cat". Suit, hands and cat look amazing. But I'll watch whatever you prefer. Thanks a lot for this video, have a great weekend💖
Monday 0635. Like you I'm drawn to Beaux. But i think you have the dry brush work down, and the Zorn face should be a snap for you. But not too much effort, or thought.
Since I have to go to work everyday and only have about 3 hours in the evening at my disposal to paint, I had to force myself to not care about wet or dry, and just paint over, where is need it, day by day until it looks done.
It has to be the Beaux painting, for me. It's a lovely expressive work. The Zorn one does nothing for me - what an, erm, interesting choice of background it has...! What was he thinking of?

This video is a masterclass in brushstrokes! I like the Beaux piece for the mood and the storytelling, a gentleman and his kitty.
Thank you for a great video. Learning so much form you!

I definitely vote on a copy of the Beaux, i just can't resist the colors and i'd love to see you paint them

I love your painting style chelsea ,,,,,,,,, inspirational

I vote for your doing the Master Copy of the Beaux
Please discuss the work of Joaquin Sorolla.

How are you sticking your sketches to the wall? Is it double sided tape?

Magiarall tu ensenanza nos lleva a ver cada detalle me encantaria las dos emoezandp con la de cecile es maravillosa sobre todo el traje
Is it legal to do the same size master copy? I read somewhere that you must do it in different size because if not then its forgery.

I would like to see you paint the man in the white with the cat. The different colors of shading in his clothing are wonderful.
Cat and hand or hat and hand. 👍 Great vid.

"It does not matter how slowly you go so long as you do not stop."
- Andy Warhol 💪😁
I love Beaux's piece better. However, Zorn's using black color is truly fantastic.

Anders Zorn hands and hat HANDS DOWN or HATS OFF!!! No pun intended, (just a bit). But seriously do Zorn PLEASE!
I also see gloves in hand on the Zorn painting
Finally......
And the kitten in his lap the ginger
I want to see you paint both😅
The lighter piece is more cohesive than the black suit which looks cut and pasted onto the background
what is the object aside of his head/left in the background? A distraction to me.
Cat please!
oh girl, you'd better bake buns
Are we hungry or thirsty? Both....So...😜
The cat.
