An uphill pike "box" with a counter-build to your faction and a camping with skirmishers. Amazing battle Heir. I would really be at a loss in your situation, you quickly created gaps in his "impenetrable defense" and exploited them successfully...
Please don't call it a pikebox. If it was a pikebox he would have no swords or thureos spears just pikes and make the battle and impossible win. Don't call it a pikebox if he has only two pikemen.
The opponent seemed a little bad mannered from heir's description. Trying so hard to counter-pick, bordering on deceitful, then staying on the hill, boxing up, such a unfortunate way to go about it.
Doublish Lord Didn't say it was not legit, just takes some of the fun out of it for me, it is a game after all. In a real situation, sure, use every advantage and underhanded trick in the book, in a game, (especially on obviously unfair maps) i don't think it is a good practice.
Doublish Lord Exactly, in a real war obviously that's the case. The game isn't about winning though, it's about fun. If they replaced the leaderboards with a personal stats page maybe it would help
He didn't really box up. He only had two pikemen so it wasn't like it was impossible for Heir to win. He brought a variety of units all with different purposes and he used the terrain to his advantage just like the commanders in that age would.
Patchy after winning an extremely costly victory is finally able to rescue Hannibal from the clutches of the Egyptians. After reorganizing his troops he sets his sights back towards Carthage, the city must hail him king, or suffer annihilation. Meanwhile Pontus has secured a mercenary Epirus army of their own, after seeing Patchy's success with them they send said force to capture Seleucia. Unfortunately both Parthia and the Bactrians have a defensive alliance pact with the Seleucids. Responding to the Pontic/Epirus threat, Parthia marches one of her armies to drive them out of Seluecia.
Narrative started in battle 163; Carthage vs Syracuse *Summary* *Roman-Carthage war* Carthage captures Sicily by conquering Syracuse and driving the Romans out, Rome then sends an army into Africa and after initial defeat is able to operate a successful guerrilla campaign. This ends when Patchy utterly defeats the Romans in Western Carthage, though the Romans are then able to capture Iberia, through marching into Arverni lands and subsequently taking them as well, fortunately Patchy is able to prevent them from taking southern Iberia. *Patchy-Carthage conflict* Pathcy's success alarms the Carthaginian nobles who are able to drive Patchy out of Carthage via bureaucracy and slander. Patchy is then recalled to deal with the Romans in Iberia, and his success reinforces the envy of his opponents. After being exiled from his home again, he secures the alliance of the Macedonians and starts fighting Carthage, this culminates in Hannibal, his adoptive son, being captured; although he is eventually able to rescue him and now plans to invade the city of Carthage and exact his revenge.
Awesome game heir and well played! Its games like those when you pull through all odds make you really enjoy your victories. Your skill totally trumped that gimmicky jester of a player. Goes to show your never going to be good at strategy games if all your practicing is counter picking and hiding on hills.
A Parthian sword rush build is pretty unexpected and can work wonders against a lot of factions, even in patch 15. I`ve been using that in 90 % of my Parthian games earlier, won some tournaments with it as well, certainly not a joke type of build, despite the stats of Parthian swords/varying opinions of people who just don`t like such builds. GG WP,dat hill camp, dat hill camp.
My problem is that I usually just bowl on into battles without thinking much about my army selection. It is fun be obviously leads to many losses :) In this case my opponents suspicious behavior in the lobby prompted me to bring the unexpected. This build would certainly cause problems for those coming skirmisher heavy has keeping cataphracts out of your skirmishers can be easier said than done. I only wish I could manage to improve my troop management skills in battle so that I could use more of these unorthodox builds. They are fun and keep the game and multiplayer interesting I think.
HeirofCarthage Very true, patch 15 increased the..uh,,unorthodoxy potential of army builds by a huge margin, leading to some pretty interesting and funny creations. :D I`ve seen some people pull off incredibly weird builds against standard OP meta builds and come out on top easily. BTW Heir i sent you a PM on the official forums if you could check it out,it`s about an interview and stuff,in the case you can`t open your forum stuff i`ll just PM you :D
Hey Heir, I have been playing some rome 2 multiplayer and I cant seem to get pike units to work for me. What would be the best way to use pikes in the current state of the game?
For me I always use 2 pike units as the centre of my army, then I keep a spear unit on both flanks, as well as melee behind. When the enemy has attacked the pikes i use my sword units to flank around. The spear units I keep in reserce in case of horse units. Use missile as well as pila to make the enemy attack the pikes head on.
Area control. No one in his right mind will ever attack pikemen from the front, at least not without bleeding them dry using ranged attacks first. Use this to your advantage to protect skirmishers or similarly weak-but-useful units using relatively few resources. The fact that the opponent has to go around your flanks is also good knowledge if you have some elite sword infantry. Just put those guys on the flanks behind your pikes, and watch the enemy get all bunched-up against them. Add a little bit of shock cavalry, and you're golden.
One more interesting tactic if you have more cav than your enemy is to try and use some of the less expensive ones to go around the back of his lines, and try to pin the infantry in place while you push forwards with your pikes and sandwich them. With patch 15 cav don't die so quickly so it's doable
this is 60fps right? Because i really see a difference, now the edges and fonts are smoother.i always had to switch back to 720p because it looked so sharp.
Well there are two problems with that now: 1) Everyone knows that I use that tactic with the Suebi now 2) It doesn't really work well anymore cause most units received a buff to morale. Suebi are very shaky now as a faction.
Yea I didn't realize till watching this replay just how high the morale on Parthian swordsmen is. For the price that stat is a bargain. I should have used my general better and could have coordinated my attacks a little better, but hey it worked out this time.
Hey Heir, I would love to play some siege/ambush/fun battles with you, maybe you should use facebook or twitter to shout out "Hey I'm playing Rome 2 right now!". I'm sure people would flood in then and be willing to play battle setups with you :)
His army wasn't the best for countering my sword rush, but he certainly had good position. The loss of his general was more devastating to his morale than the loss of my general to my men fortunately.
Certain maps would be fine without them, but some maps (such as this one) would be interesting if they had capture points or a defensive structure at the middle or something.
I love them, but that's because I love Parthia, and they're both very similar. The reason people find them underwhelming is because they're lacking historical units and such, they're just a copy of Parthia really..
HeirofCarthage but aren't Kartli axemen more expensive than Parthian Swords ? That would mean you would get a smaller army or use cheaper units for the rest of your army

CommanderofBaktria That's why I used the comas. It is a pikebox in the same sense a sheet of cardboard flanked by two walls is a box.
Umm those are apostrophes not commas.
CommanderofBaktria True! English not being being my mother language, I sometimes confuse some words with some other words.
Lol k
To be honest, it does not matter if someone has the higher terrain, being SURROUNDED is always a bad idea.
Great playing!
The opponent seemed a little bad mannered from heir's description. Trying so hard to counter-pick, bordering on deceitful, then staying on the hill, boxing up, such a unfortunate way to go about it.
Never fight a fair fight if you intend to win. I think his strategy was legit, although I can see why people frown upon him.

Matt Kaye Agreed.

The calm before the storm mate, just waiting till the pre-holiday rush :)
Incredably good job.The hill box got crashed.
wow he hillcamped the whole time and formed a super defensive box and you still managed to march up there and beat him. that was awesome heir, gg
good battle i respect the way u play beat a player on his own grounds
Awesome job man, it's amazing how versatile Parthia can be.
They are a fun faction. I liked them in campaign as well.
I really enjoy your online battles heir! you still managed to defeat your opponent even though he has the uphill pikebox advantage
It wasn't a pikebox. He only used two pikes on the front of his position.
either ways it was a good fight I really enjoyed watching it.. :)
Glad you enjoyed the videos
Very nice win. Great turnaround in that battle

Yes as others have said the easiest way to get them to work is to not use them :)
Nicely explained tactics and well executed.
Thanks, glad you enjoyed it. As usual though I always watch the replay and then realize how many mistakes I could have avoided :)
If he had used the dogs when your sword line approached and moved in with pikes to follow would that have made the dogs worth it?
Possible. Depends on how effectively the dogs kept my men from discharging their javelins.
really a nice fought battle, tks
this is 60fps right? Because i really see a difference, now the edges and fonts are smoother.i always had to switch back to 720p because it looked so sharp.
Yes all my videos will be in 60fps now.
Don't forget the Black Sea DLC.
Oh a little bird tells me you will be seeing something of it on my channel in the quite near future ;)
Hey heir would be possible to show us some Suebi swarm tactic again? Thanks :)
Well there are two problems with that now:
1) Everyone knows that I use that tactic with the Suebi now
2) It doesn't really work well anymore cause most units received a buff to morale. Suebi are very shaky now as a faction.
what is your best faction
Heir, what about those tournament matches? Has the tournament STILL not ended.
They are corrupted replays now since patches have released since I played them.
Nice of your opponent to quit with 7 seconds to go so it wasn't a draw
Love you Heir
would a old laptop work for this game its like 3 or 4 yrs old
Lol no man unless it's a Alienware or a super computer
no because i have a 3 yr old laptop and i cant even play tw shogun 2 on low settings
desktop that's not really for gaming, maybe
FUCK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I WANNA PLAY THIS GAME thanks for the reply :(
matt c play medieval 2, it's considered a gem of the series, and it's an older game so your computer should be able to handle it
That was impressive!!
You missed an easy Twin Peaks reference there dude...tsk tsk.
Man..twin peaks...ugh,been ages.
Thought the same thing!
lol
You _did_ bring a typical Parthian army. The army with which the Parthians thrashed Rome at Carrhae was _not_ a typical Parthian army.
Not a typical army for Rome 2 is what he meant
your not scratchy your patchy!
*You're
Sun Jetzu best Jetzu
lol
when patchy has itchy balls he is.
Lmao
When's the next time you'll do an hour special or live stream heir?
Just to warn you, Heir. At the end of the video your mic started to act a bit strangely.
Yea I can't seem to understand what causes it yet.
hey heir have you been unable to launch your game as of late? i can't launch it without it freezing and crashing fir the past few days
It has been working fine for me. You may need to check the forums to see if others are having the issue.
Pure rush Parthia can be damns scary if your come peppered with spears and skirmishers.
Yea I didn't realize till watching this replay just how high the morale on Parthian swordsmen is. For the price that stat is a bargain. I should have used my general better and could have coordinated my attacks a little better, but hey it worked out this time.
How do I turn off mods?
The mod manager button will allow you to get to them and disable the mods. It is in the launch menu that pops up when launching the game in steam
Rome 2.
Please introduce a Early/Late period system for units...
E.g. Charioteers (early) Azat Knights (late)
Hey Heir, I would love to play some siege/ambush/fun battles with you, maybe you should use facebook or twitter to shout out "Hey I'm playing Rome 2 right now!". I'm sure people would flood in then and be willing to play battle setups with you :)
I have never considered a facebook page, but could use twitter.
Would be much appreciated, I like fun online battles, and find some players I encounter a bit too serious.
when i get this game i will most defintely try to battle you to the last man unless all my men run away like cowards :P
I would join your game but you will end my win streak xD
I don't think I am a threat to most players winning streaks :)
HeirofCarthage Lol Still My Micro Needs Work
Your opponent had a PERFECT position and army... Yet he lost.
He was expecting cav and Heir chose well and beat him. There was always be someone who is better or has a better strategy.
CommanderofBaktria Yea, but it if there was no mistakes it would have been so awesome!
His army wasn't the best for countering my sword rush, but he certainly had good position. The loss of his general was more devastating to his morale than the loss of my general to my men fortunately.
Have you ever thought of doing a total war talk show with other total war youtubers
I haven't thought about it, but time would certainly not allow me to do this. I sometimes feel lucky to just have time to make videos :)
dogs can mess up heavy infantry if they are already fighting another infantry unit, faster than an italian swordsman atleast
Wish they had shogun 2 shrines
Certain maps would be fine without them, but some maps (such as this one) would be interesting if they had capture points or a defensive structure at the middle or something.
HeirofCarthage There is a lot of room for interesting gameplay - i suspect atilla will provide a more fleshed out multiplayer
would be cool to see armenia more i have so much luck with them but people seem to find them underwhelming for some reason.
I love them, but that's because I love Parthia, and they're both very similar.
The reason people find them underwhelming is because they're lacking historical units and such, they're just a copy of Parthia really..
Armenia can do something similar to this with their kartli axemen.
HeirofCarthage but aren't Kartli axemen more expensive than Parthian Swords ? That would mean you would get a smaller army or use cheaper units for the rest of your army
Lol its itch and scratchy hhahah
can we add you on steam?
That guy should have been Sparta or Egypt.
I think sparta would be the strongest counter as I would have had no tools to kill royal spartans.
No wonder no one wants to play ambush battles
I was offering myself up as the one being ambushed :)
