Just had disc surgery for a very badly herniated disc between C6/C7. This was my 3rd disc surgery and except for wearing a cervical collar for 2 weeks it was a relatively easy/pain free recovery, especially compared to my lower back surgeries. However, the pain before surgery was much worse for the neck injury.

@Lana Lewis Hello Lana, i hope everything goes well on Friday. Clearly I'm no expert on each case, but I was lucky in that my wife is a nurse and had everything sorted for me at home and was able to help me where others may need some extra gadgets or equipment. The pain immediately after the operation was minimal due to the drugs and anesthesia, so I thought I was doing fine, but after a couple of days and once home the first week was tough as the bruising and swelling from the operation made things sore and very difficult to move. The no bending, lifting or twisting rule is real and tough to adhere to, especially if like me you'd been stuck on your back for a while before the operation, however, some people may need a walker frame to get around and help them get from sitting or lying to upright and walking or shuffling without twisting or bending. Likewise one of those long reach arm things that you can grab stuff with or just poke at light switch. I was trying to walk or shuffle as quickly as possible, but I can imagine if you're reliant on someone to help you up, there may be times where a bottle or pan to pee in at night or when you're alone may be useful for some. Walking is recommended to help the recovery, but there is only so much you're allowed or can do during the first month after the operation, so somewhere comfortable to sit or lie down with whatever you need to keep you entertained or do some work without having to get up every two minutes is a necessity really. Something that may or may not be a consideration is medication - in the weeks leading up to my operation i had ended up on morphine a few times a day because of the pain, I chose to go stop this immediately after the operation because I thought it was something I could have very easily become addicted to and for a few days I was probably a bit grumpy and felt like I wanted more of it, but ultimately stuck to regular pain killers like ibuprofen and paracetamol until the swelling and residual pain of the operation calmed down after a week or so. And clearly I'm glad now that I did. I think I was only allowed to change my dressing every other day or 3 days or something like that, so I just showered on those days and then needed help to reapply the dressing. After a week or so the stitches were snipped out but my wife, but maybe you will need an appointment to get that done depending on the type of stitches had. All in all its been a great relief for me getting this operation, I had mine during lockdown here for covid, so I wouldn't have been going out anyway, after the follow up consultation a month or 6 weeks post op, every was well and since then I've been back going to the gym here since they opened again and out road cycling again most days (6 hours in the saddle yesterday with no back pain). I have a minor problem with my left foot that goes numb after 20 minutes of walking or a bit longer of cycling and has minor pins and needles most of the time - but I'm 43 and had been managing the problem with my back for many years before it finally 'went' for good and the nerve problems I have as a result with my foot are likely a result of that long-term abuse I put myself through (including 12 years as an army officer in the infantry in the British army) and not in anyway due to the surgery. Very glad I got the operation done finally and I'm happy to answer any other questions you may have. I hope everything goes well for your daughter this week and that she recovers quickly and sticks to the post op regimen and rehab! iain

So helpful. Thank you I was just operated in Paris and had a beautiful experience. I had energy and no pain. For 2 days while in the hospital I truly thought I’d walk home , about 3 miles away. :). I was advised to cool off so I took a taxi. But surely enough , as soon as I got home , and while my anesthesia had worn off, I realized I needed to take it easy. Tonight is day 5 and and throughout the day I walked twice around a block and took a flight of stairs. Then I worked at my desk hanging my legs in different positions. I was in mild pain. It finally felt that I had surgery. I took 1000 MG x3 of Paracetamol , and I’m feeling the wound. In other words, I’m realizing how vulnerable the area is and how it needs gentle recovery. I’m so happy I made the decision to go through the surgery, yet I also realize I’m not going to play sports right away. I’m fine with that. My consist practice of Ashtanga yoga for years before this surgery, while avoided some poses, gave me a lot of strength allowing me to move my body by lifting myself from arms instead of risking twists or strange bends. .This video is very comforting
How do you feel now? In 4 days time I'm going in for this surgery aswell and am very scared, but I have been in this pain for almost 8 weeks now I can Barley walk so I'm hoping so much I will be okay.
@@sh9078 hi yes I had it done almost two years ago it's scary of the thought but I've not had any problems. In fact straight after the operation they get to stand and walk straight away it's important. It took me two weeks to recover and about a month fully and back to work
I'm going to agree with moving. I have MS so all along I thought that numbness and tingling in my feet was related to that. I also had excruciating pain. My most recent MRI revealed a synovial cyst in the lumbar area causing severe spinal stenosis . Two days ago I had a lumbar laminectomy and it's synovial cyst removed that was causing severe spinal stenosis. I had a tiny bit of pain the first couple of hours after surgery. I left that night and the next morning I had ZERO pain!! With the exception obviously at the surgical site which was expected and minimal. It has improved my life. And no I'm not a commercial I'm an actual patient. And now I really only need Tylenol for the pain.
My partner had to get one removed the cyst...he had already had laminectomy 1 yr prior to developing the cyst...had no pain after. But 2 yrs later has bit of pain but he's 77 so could just be arthritis

I have to have lower back surgery due to scoliosis and my doctor today talked to me on the phone for about eight minutes, and the phrase that he used - "The first two weeks will be very painful" - is haunting me tonight and I am very frightened and in a panic frame of mind. I know I have to undergo this procedure, but I am truly terrified. THANK YOU for this video, I broke down in tears watching it. I so wish my doctor had talked to me the way you do in this video. Watching it I feel a little bit better. I wish you were my doctor. More doctors need to see this and learn how to speak to us, their patients. You are a treasure.

@@lawrenceclemens8494 I too have sever Scoliosis. (S curve, biggest curve around 62~ degrees.) I have done intense therapy and bracing out in California-about 2,000 miles away from home. My pain got worse, however, and now I’m opting for surgery. The pain is unbearable most days, huh? They use weasel words like “discomfort” to justify under-medicating you for pain. His advice for getting up and walking is good. But it’s not easy to do with Level 8 pain. Though I sympathize with the unemployed coal miners taking Fentanyl, I AM NOT ONE OF THEM. My need for pain meds is short-term and legitimate!
Lemon Lover I’m doing much better now that I’m in therapy and I started working out yesterday. I’m not where I want to be as of yet. But I’m way better then after surgery. It wasn’t easy for me. Not sure about you? I’m gaining my strength back and that helps a lot. One tip I can give you is to keep moving walking is the best.
After my surgery on my fractured l3, they had me stand up a day after. I could barely even take a step. There were pains I never thought I could experience! You can learn a lot just from an injury like that. At the time of me typing this, it's been roughly a month since the Operation. I still have a ways to go until I can walk normally, bend, twist and run. I went from taking 5 medications to just 1. Therapy.is.amazing.
I had spine surgery on the 15th of February! I was waking about 8 hours after, I was in a lot of pain, by the 19th today. I can fully walk, the pain has gone. Bending hurts a bit.
Dr cervical spine fusion surgery had been done late August last year and I'm still feeling so much pain only after being out a part of day to day living.
I just had my lower back surgery (disk decommission and coflex device implant) surgery was such a success feeling went back to my leg right after surgery, I am able to perform all push/resist test, which I wasn’t able to do prior. Pain is minimal and 3 hours after surgery I am walking on my own using bathrooms. Today second day after surgery and I am about to be discharged!!! Big big thanks to my Dr.
We are about at the same healing level and I urge you not to fall into the trap of overdoing things! Due to wanting so badly to recover, you risk everything from your long-term recovery to undoing the benefits of your surgery completely. My surgery was Friday March 29 and I too was walking without a walker the next day. So when I got home last Thursday, I immediately charged into doing housework and all the stuff they tell you not to do. Well, I paid for it the next day (yesterday). My pain was greater than at any time since the surgery and I could not find a way to get comfortable. Thank goodness I had some Percocet and I had to take two 10 mg tablets at once to get over the pain threshold. Today I feel much better and am getting up more but NOT working. The last thing I need is to give up a year of my life to a failed fusion. Good luck in your recovery!

carrie b 👋 hi there, it’s a bit more then a month after my surgery and to be honest it’s like Russian roulette: one day I feel fantastic and able to do anything... other days (probably I was doing everything I should’ve 😂) I feel discomfort, not really pain.. My next appointment with surgeon in 2 weeks till then he gave me a list of small workout routine to strengthen my core and back muscle, I do not fallow them lol I do my own (I am a yogi) stretches and strength. Overall- I coincided surgery is a success, and it’s not as bad as I thought, I didn’t spent a day in bed after I was discharged from hospital, neither was taking any painkillers after hospital. no jumping and running and golf yet , but think a week or two and I will be fully back to normal activities. O forgot ... I was driving in a week :) Good luck and do not take any (including mine) experience as it is, we all different and process of healing different for everyone.
Had my l4/l5 discs removed and fused back in march.. still in quite bit of pain, fiannlly came off the patches yesterday after a year, that's was my number 1 thing to do was to get off the meds as they do more harm than good, the CBD I've been using has been amazing for my sleep.. I'm praying this procedure has worked, hospital are happy with it, just wish this pain would go as I'm still unable to do most activities.. the worse being not being able to pick up my daughter. I walk everyday around my village, it's just frustrating that unfortunately that's the only sort of exercise I can do atm. Love to all who have gone through this God awful pain and still pushing forward.. cause theres been days over the last couple of years when I really didn't want to carry on, and if you haven't been there then peeps just dont understand how that feels. Thank god for my children, the biggest reason I get up everyday and try again not matter how hard the pain is to deal with.
I had triple back surgery in May 2018 in one week.. I was in house at Kessler for a Month and half.. To this day I still can't walk normally. I'm not in a lot of pain but I get spasms and muscle weakness.

I had a microdiscectomy on 12/6/18. It re-herniated 4 weeks later. Had a failed epidural cortisone shot on 5/10/19. Had a tlif on 6/20/19. Still experiencing popping and the same amount of issues as before. Hopefully over time is does get better.
Interesting reading all the comments with everyone experiences. More helpful thank this video. I had L5-S1 Bi-Lateral Discectomy and laminectomy surgery 8 days ago. Woke up pain was gone and I was walking. Next morning doctor said he didn't like the right leg weakness I still had and did another mri, went BACK in for surgery for a second disk the supposedly ruptured during/after the prior day surgery. So day three in the hospital, I'm walking and pain is gone. Right leg is week, can't tip toe with it but no need for pain meds. NOW it's day eight and I'm typing this at 3am cause I can't sleep, sharp/tight pain in left back of thigh. It seems to come and go past few days. That said still haven't taken a single pain med and am able to walk, shower etc and it's better than before. My right foot and partial saddle area is still slightly numb. Can't wait for that to go away if it ever does and for this dang leg pain to stop.
I have numbness in my right leg but my back pains are much better since surgery but it's acting up now so yeah I feel you man. I hope you're doing better now xx💕
@@deepalig3938 Its been 8 months, still cant tip toe on right leg BUT calf muscle is slowly coming back. right foot heel and last two toes are still numb, saddle area numbness went away 90%. I think over next year or two the numbess will go away completely and I will get full calf muscle strength back. Looking back it was def. scary experience but having the surgery was best thing. Im back to normal life, outdoors all the time and fishing more than ever before. luckily never had to take a single pain med.
Just checking in with everyone. Im a little over 3 months into the recovery, started PT, i decided to do water therapy to strengthen core. Anyone thats had lower back surgery i highly recommend trying water therapy before regular.
@Kyle Longo: May I ask when you started your water therapy and which type? Do you mean swimming or water walking? I’m only 10 days out from surgery so it will be awhile before I’m more active but I’m eager to go back to the pool. However, I’m also kind of nervous because last time I went to the pool I was learning how to swim and I was told to kick/turn quickly and I put my back out from the movement. 😳 I’m just wondering how long it might take to get to that point where your core is strengthened enough to swim. May I also ask what type of stroke might be wise in order to avoid putting my newly fixed back in harms way again! Thank you.
@@mswatchlist7699 I did a lot of walking the first week I got into the pool. So I could rebuild my legs. I would lay and float on my back and also I took a pool noodle or float and out under my legs at times to do a regular swim. That way I didnt kick so much and force my back to take a beating. After 2 weeks of doing that daily I removed the floats from under my legs and 1 swimming lap..the next week I did 2 and so on. The worst part of surgery for me was getting in and out of bed. So if you got that..you will be good. Really take slow pace and walk and float..
I am 10 months out of triple fusion spinal surgery and the pain that I have is consistently more than before the surgery. By a large margin. I have been through three rounds of epidural shots to alleviate the pain including and ablation process to kill the nerves and non of this has helped me. I guess that I am now facing never ending pain for the rest of my days on the his earth. My advice to you if you are considering fusion surgery is - don’t do it!! Period!!! When I asked my surgeon how I could alleviate my pain, his response was to say, that I should now consider fusing L5 to S. This is a very difficult operation and one that I could not even consider. Look it up, you will be astonished at the process that needs to be done for this surgery.
I'm fused from S1 to T10. L5 to S1 is not especially bad, having had it done quite a while ago. I have returning Cauda Equina syndrome after two back surgeries 8 weeks apart in 2018, which were supposed to fix it. Strangely I'm considering my tenth back operation. By this stage I've nothing more to lose and I don't want to be more disabled than I already am.

I had laminectomy/disectomy for cauda equina syndrome; after surgery apart from sore scar I was not in pain in my back whatsoever apart from being a little stiff when standing,which lasted only a few days. I have had paralysis in my left foot with foot drop for 6 weeks but getting better every day, it maybe unothadox but I find holding a hot water shower head over the numb areas for 10 minutes or so everyday seems to help... I've yet to thank my surgeon for doing an A1 job. I'm obviously one of the more fortunate ones. 49yrs old! was taking diclofenac and paracetamol for about 3 weeks now only take them maybe 3 times a week. I can not describe the pain I was in before surgery so any pain now is insignificant. Best of luck to all who are still recovering.
Same here, I had 2 bulging discs at 26yrs at 29rs cauda equina l5/s1. Pain was so unbearable before surgery I considered suicide. I now have numbness down left leg that's annoying (especially in my toes) have paralysis in my right lower leg that causes difficulty walking. My pain basically stopped after surgery apart from tenderness in my hamstrings and calves. Wish everyone all the best in situation/recovery.

I'm going under the knife in 4 days time for this exact operation, I'm soo scared but I've had enough of my life its been 2 months that I can walk and get electric shocks down my legs everyday I'm on allot of tablets aswell I just want my life back, feel like a prisoner locked up because walking is so painful

I had a herniated disc since September and then had gone to the hospital in 2019 October 22 and 23 morning I had a surgery and the pain was gone my right leg was a weak and I couldn’t be hard on my toes still stay in bed for about a month now
I am having a laminectomy for cervical stenosis soon. I also have multiple herniations, I am 57 years old and currently very active. I am scared that I will lose condition, gain weight and struggle with daily activities. I live alone and have no one to help me except for a CNA for a very limited time. My family is in another country.
Not too good... My 2cd opinion surgeon recomended an ACDF- there are more issues with my spine than originally thought. And now I am having problems with my insurance and home care- I am having a meeting with my medical team next week.
What do I do now after FSS after multiple epidural injections, nerve root blocks and multiple spinal fluid leaks and three spine fusions surgeries later the horrific problems continue now I’m being faced with the doctor advising a nerve ablation procedure is needed. I’m highly concerned because the aftermath of epidural injections in my neck left me with Essential Tremors since 2017 because of that I’m highly concerned having anyone get that close to the nerves in my spine. “Is it just me or is there anyone else out there experiencing such a huge amount of bad luck with their spine. To date I’m in pain from my neck to buttocks every day. Increasingly getting worse since my last fusion/laminectomy in January 2017 and I’ve developed adult scoliosis which is very minimal right now not really affecting my spine fusions at this time anyway. I can not do anything physical without suffering afterwards.
I wouldn't have ablation therapy, but I've had nine surgeries on my back and am fused from S1 to T10. I've developed Cauda Equina syndrome for the second time in the same place. I hope you have more success with your back pain.
@@bluejeans1773 thanks for asking. I've gotten worse. The nerve pain is there 24/7 and the only doctor that may be able to "help" me is on the other side of the world. Death seems to be the only available option!
My fusion was really painful for the first few days but I'm about 5 days out now and with frequent movement and extreme care I've noticed a huge difference in my pain. It almost hurts less than before surgery. I must be one of the lucky ones who took the surgery and recovery really well, and I think it may have been due to my amount of pain before the procedure. The hardest part was probably keeping the drain near me 😂

@@James-to7pi ohhhh that would explain the blood. Immediately following surgery i was being kept on a routine of pain meds to keep the pain down as much as possible but i had to get morphine a few times in the 2 days i stayed in the hospital. After i left the hospital I refused to take my narcotics unless i absolutely needed them, so my pain levels went between 6 and 9 most times. I healed surprisingly fast. I was 18 and relatively healthy when i got the surgery, so that might be why. I hope your recovery goes well!
@@James-to7pi also remember that everybody's experience is different and you know your body better than anyone else so if something is wrong you should definitely let your doctor know.
I've had two major surgeries on L4, L5, and S1. Pain was excruciating afterwards. No one will ever touch my lower back again regardless of how much pain I'm in. Best thing to do is never let anyone operate on your back. Odds are you'll never get rid of the pain you're in. Learn to live with it!
Man the day I came out of surgery I was walking..nurse said to walk to end of hall 4 times by 7am I got out at 5 45 pmish..well thank God she misunderstood after doing 2 times. .I was hurting...I'm on day 4 now and just got to being able to lay on sides
If able...go to walmart and get the "boyfriend pillow" pillow that had the back with two arms coming off sides of it...Help me a lot..and the wedge memory pad
Whatever you're comfortable with, though I wouldn't lie on your stomach. You need to change position to avoid pressure points. If lying on your side, it's best to place a pillow between your legs for support. Good luck!
I just at surgery for scoliosis and I can just tell you one thing the recovery is the worst time of my life. Always being in pain, I can barely do anything by myself, Never feel comfortable anywhere. Tbh I just hate my life right now😕
Desmo Froppy I’m sorry for what you are going through right now. I am on my 4th lumbar fusion (3 weeks ago) so I know your pain. I can tell you that it gets better. You just have to be patient and do your walking and PT exercises. My first 3 surgeries have all recovered with minimal pain (about 12-18 mos.). Hang in there my friend. This 4th surgery isn’t like the rest of my other ones. This one is extremely painful in recovery. I think it is involving something called the SIJ - Sacroiliac Joint pain. Hopefully you are not experiencing this. Best of luck to you!

It’s nice that there is someone that is going or has been through the same thing because you know you are not the only one and that there is someone who is going through it and understand the pain as well as what you are going through. May I ask what you had done? Was it a whole spine fusion or just a few levels. It does get better, give it Time 😊
Curious how much pain should you be in after 3 months? I had surgery L4/L5 Fusion in April, now in August, feel like I did 2 weeks after surgery. But back hurts when I bend slightly forward reaching for door of fridge or pushing glass on water dispenser. Doesn't feel like muscle pain. Pelvic tilts hurts as well. Or moving leaning sideways, and only talking a couple of inches same with bending. Pain after surgery was nothing, off all meds eveb tylenol by day 3. Went home from hospital same day. But doesn't seem to be getting better now? What could it be? How do I know if I should push PT harder or relax. Really just walking about 1 mile twice a day but doesn't seem to be getting better?
They just removed most of my L1,L2, & L3. Was supposed to be outpatient but its been six days and im still in the hospital. Cant walk anymore. :/ Sorry you have pain bending. That sounds like it may be tightness from scar tissue after muscles tore trying to compensate for the hole in your back? Try to find some mild daily stretching routine to slowly work out those tight areas and see if maybe that helps.

What injury happened to make you get spinal fusion? Sorry I’m a bit nervous as to what surgery I will have to get, my T12 is completely collapsed and may have bursted.
I don’t know how can you type thing on the telephone, first week I couldn’t even talk haha. For the next three months it will be hell, but now it’s been almost 2 years and I feel fantastic. The key is to never stop moving, train well in the gym and you will be fine.

I went to a children surgeon last week for a compression fracture that I’ve had over a year and he ended up telling me that I should just excerise and sent me home with a paper on how to stretch my heels. I can’t even explain the pain I’m feeling, I cried while making spaghetti because of how badly it hurt and ended up just having to sit on the floor and reach up. Sounds pathetic but I FEEL pathetic. I’m afraid that I won’t even be able to carry my kids. It sounds dramatic and maybe I am..but should I go to a second surgeon for a different opinion?
Holly Freeman Sorry if I’m responding late, I really understand the pain you feel. I went to 3/4 surgeons before I decided to get the surgery, I suggest you to do the same. Be careful because many just see money when there’s a patient walking through their door, I’ve done the surgery in Italy so I actually payed zero euro for everything, don’t know where you’re living. Daughter had magec rod implant early 2022 and left her with flatback-syndrome and post operative permanent neurological deficit. Post surgery, surgeon explained the intra operative that the neuromonitoring signal disappeared during lumbar screw implant, daughter's leg stopped moving, but they continued with the surgery until the end of the surgery. After the surgery, her legs started moving. We're wondering why they didn't perform the wake up test during the lost of the signal. Daughter woke up from surgery with leg numbness and swallow legs, leg jerking and shaking, hypersensitivity to touch. 2 months post op, loss of bowel and bladder control and it then recovered after 4 months. Since she woke up from the surgery, both legs were with electric shocks pain from lower back down to both feet, daily. She described as tingling, stabbing, needles pinched pain 24/7. It's been 15 months post op now, she's still suffering nerve pain daily. Permanent disability as a result of this outcome. Permanently in wheelchair now. She's still going back to the original surgeon fevery 8 weeks for magec lengthening procedures. The surgeon claimed it was a successful surgery and she needed to have more PT to get back to walking. The question now is how to resolve the Neurological deficit and flatback syndrome issues. She losses her natural lordosis curvature since the op and not able to bear weight to stand or walk upright. With the 24/7 tingling and electric shocks on both legs, it is extremely impossible for her to be able to stand straight to walk. Appreciate any input or advice to help her to get back her life.

I'm on a waiting list for surgery for bulging disc at L4-S5. I've just turned 35 and in scared. I didn't know there was a 70% chance of paralysis and ending up with a catheter/stoma (discovered what that was of recent too) This is helpful
I'm not sure where you got the idea of a "70% chance of paralysis," but that's just not true. I've had a dozen surgeries to my spine in the last 15 years, so I am very familiar with the risks of complications. I know that the doctors would NEVER do a surgery in which there was a 70% chance of permanent additional injury - particularly something as devastating as paralysis. Maybe they would do the procedure if the risk was 7%, but I believe even that is unlikely. Probably you heard 0.7% and got confused.

Bowel and bladder have been affected. Pain, tingling numbness down both legs. Feel like I've been horse riding and very little sensation in my feet. The pain in the legs can be horrific. I have no reason to lie. 2 different hospitals with the same response. I've been refused surgery since I was 12. Sadly my MRI from sept 2018 was very different from 2019. The MRI, CT and Xray I had today showed me how bad it was. My neurosurgeon has his concerns so, he ans his superior will be having a Multidisciplinary Meet next week. Gave me all the warnings including catheter, Stoma, full paralysis. Frankly.....morphine has not even scraped the icing off this pain. I'd sell all I possess just to rid this pain and be a normal fun mum again

I hate to rain on someone's parade, but not all back surgery is successful. Even if it's "a success" you may still be in pain. As you're in your fourth month I'd see your surgeon about the left leg numbness. My 9th back surgery seemed to help but after six weeks all the leg pain returned. Eleven months later it's still there. I'd have to say in my case it's "failed back syndrome".
Amaya Mendez has your pain in your leg left yet ? My girlfriend had back surgery on her lumbar spine but in decmember but is still feeling pain especially in her leg
I’d love to hear from Amaya and see how far along she is now. But I can tell you guys that I got my fusion done in February, a little after I wrote that comment. I now know what she means about the leg. Yes, I went numb after the surgery. My doctor tells me it will come back over time. So it’s been about two and half months for me now since the fusion and I stretch EVERY DAY for LONG PERIODS OF TIME lol The numbness is all the way from my butt, forgive me for keeping it real, alllll the way down my calf , heel and pinky toe. It’s definitely gotten better over time. I feel pricklies, or like static electricity sometimes which means the nerve is still alive. Be gentle but stretch, massaging is a big help too. My foot was completely dead until I rubbed it and it began to come back. It’s different for everyone . I’ll come back again in the future and fill anyone that wants to know in on any progress.

Paulo Masetto I have had 3 spinal fusions (L3-S1). The most recent was 3 weeks ago. I can tell you this, you will be able to exercise just like you did before surgery, maybe even better depending on which level your surgery will be. My best recommendation to you is to get more than 1 opinion if possible. I had 4 opinions. I think you will feel better and more confident having agreeing opinions. It’s a good piece of mind knowing that doctors agree on exactly what is wrong and how to go about fixing the problem. Best of luck to you. Jiany Star Massa vich If your surgeon reads your MRI as needing surgery get a second opinion and if they agree get the surgery. If your problem can be addressed via laminectomy rather than fusion that would be great. Recovery from fusion is longer.
Jiany Star Massa vich I assume you have tried spinal injections of cortisone. If not try first before having surgery. Almost ten years of these injections - twice a year - helped me avoid surgery until recently.

Doctor stated he would recommend surgery, but due to the fact that am an athlete or was and still workout, he told me that many patients that underwent surgery didn't feel better necessarily. So if pain is tolerable not to do it. Pain is on and off, but i just don't trust the surgeries out there.

@@JIANYM36 If the pain is at a point where it's affecting your day to day life and you've had the pain for several months without much relief, I'd seriously consider the surgery, especially if you have numbness. It sounds like your sciatic nerve is taking some bad damage. I had a microdiscectomy last August after suffering for 6+ months of severe sciatica that only got worse as time went on and it was the best decision I've ever made. I'm back to normal again without any symptoms. I say go for it.

Kyle Longo numbness still there but pain isn’t as bad... Depending on how numb your leg is until you have surgery is a big indicator on how long it will take to heal..... I believe that this is just gonna be something I have to deal with forever which sucks but life could be worse

Dear Dr i had a surgery about 8 month ago and I still have pain in my back it's improved after surgery but I didn't relief from it what can I do to get red of it.
@@annimack1591 that's because they're fuckin sketchy and are too ignorant and arrogant to admit to a mistake... adn they do this with a lot of patients and nobody ever finds out because it's impossible (at least in my state) to prove it. I've tried to record doctors or challenged them in a way about their decisions and they've just gotten up and walked away, or thrown away evidence or lies to my face knowing we both know they're telling lies.

Elizabeth Kanyua Doctors always use the term discomfort, particularly neurosurgeons or orthopaedic surgeons. It's totally wrong. Back surgery is indescribable agony!
mahongo mihova I’m not sure so you should ask a doctor, but you should be able to do anything a person without scoliosis can do, however after spinal fusion surgery doctors recommend not doing any contact sports for at least 1 year. Hope this helps 😊

Just had disc surgery for a very badly herniated disc between C6/C7. This was my 3rd disc surgery and except for wearing a cervical collar for 2 weeks it was a relatively easy/pain free recovery, especially compared to my lower back surgeries. However, the pain before surgery was much worse for the neck injury.
Thank you so much for this video I just had a Laminectomy and in pain. I called my Dr but it's a busy office and sometimes they don't get back too you but your video helped me a lot. Also you have a very nice calming voice.

@Lana Lewis Hello Lana, i hope everything goes well on Friday. Clearly I'm no expert on each case, but I was lucky in that my wife is a nurse and had everything sorted for me at home and was able to help me where others may need some extra gadgets or equipment.
The pain immediately after the operation was minimal due to the drugs and anesthesia, so I thought I was doing fine, but after a couple of days and once home the first week was tough as the bruising and swelling from the operation made things sore and very difficult to move. The no bending, lifting or twisting rule is real and tough to adhere to, especially if like me you'd been stuck on your back for a while before the operation, however, some people may need a walker frame to get around and help them get from sitting or lying to upright and walking or shuffling without twisting or bending. Likewise one of those long reach arm things that you can grab stuff with or just poke at light switch.
I was trying to walk or shuffle as quickly as possible, but I can imagine if you're reliant on someone to help you up, there may be times where a bottle or pan to pee in at night or when you're alone may be useful for some.
Walking is recommended to help the recovery, but there is only so much you're allowed or can do during the first month after the operation, so somewhere comfortable to sit or lie down with whatever you need to keep you entertained or do some work without having to get up every two minutes is a necessity really.
Something that may or may not be a consideration is medication - in the weeks leading up to my operation i had ended up on morphine a few times a day because of the pain, I chose to go stop this immediately after the operation because I thought it was something I could have very easily become addicted to and for a few days I was probably a bit grumpy and felt like I wanted more of it, but ultimately stuck to regular pain killers like ibuprofen and paracetamol until the swelling and residual pain of the operation calmed down after a week or so. And clearly I'm glad now that I did.
I think I was only allowed to change my dressing every other day or 3 days or something like that, so I just showered on those days and then needed help to reapply the dressing. After a week or so the stitches were snipped out but my wife, but maybe you will need an appointment to get that done depending on the type of stitches had.
All in all its been a great relief for me getting this operation, I had mine during lockdown here for covid, so I wouldn't have been going out anyway, after the follow up consultation a month or 6 weeks post op, every was well and since then I've been back going to the gym here since they opened again and out road cycling again most days (6 hours in the saddle yesterday with no back pain). I have a minor problem with my left foot that goes numb after 20 minutes of walking or a bit longer of cycling and has minor pins and needles most of the time - but I'm 43 and had been managing the problem with my back for many years before it finally 'went' for good and the nerve problems I have as a result with my foot are likely a result of that long-term abuse I put myself through (including 12 years as an army officer in the infantry in the British army) and not in anyway due to the surgery.
Very glad I got the operation done finally and I'm happy to answer any other questions you may have. I hope everything goes well for your daughter this week and that she recovers quickly and sticks to the post op regimen and rehab!

So helpful. Thank you I was just operated in Paris and had a beautiful experience. I had energy and no pain. For 2 days while in the hospital I truly thought I’d walk home , about 3 miles away. :). I was advised to cool off so I took a taxi. But surely enough , as soon as I got home , and while my anesthesia had worn off, I realized I needed to take it easy. Tonight is day 5 and and throughout the day I walked twice around a block and took a flight of stairs. Then I worked at my desk hanging my legs in different positions. I was in mild pain. It finally felt that I had surgery. I took 1000 MG x3 of Paracetamol , and I’m feeling the wound. In other words, I’m realizing how vulnerable the area is and how it needs gentle recovery. I’m so happy I made the decision to go through the surgery, yet I also realize I’m not going to play sports right away. I’m fine with that. My consist practice of Ashtanga yoga for years before this surgery, while avoided some poses, gave me a lot of strength allowing me to move my body by lifting myself from arms instead of risking twists or strange bends. .This video is very comforting

@@sh9078 hi yes I had it done almost two years ago it's scary of the thought but I've not had any problems. In fact straight after the operation they get to stand and walk straight away it's important. It took me two weeks to recover and about a month fully and back to work
I'm going to agree with moving. I have MS so all along I thought that numbness and tingling in my feet was related to that. I also had excruciating pain. My most recent MRI revealed a synovial cyst in the lumbar area causing severe spinal stenosis . Two days ago I had a lumbar laminectomy and it's synovial cyst removed that was causing severe spinal stenosis. I had a tiny bit of pain the first couple of hours after surgery. I left that night and the next morning I had ZERO pain!! With the exception obviously at the surgical site which was expected and minimal. It has improved my life. And no I'm not a commercial I'm an actual patient. And now I really only need Tylenol for the pain.
My partner had to get one removed the cyst...he had already had laminectomy 1 yr prior to developing the cyst...had no pain after. But 2 yrs later has bit of pain but he's 77 so could just be arthritis

I have to have lower back surgery due to scoliosis and my doctor today talked to me on the phone for about eight minutes, and the phrase that he used - "The first two weeks will be very painful" - is haunting me tonight and I am very frightened and in a panic frame of mind. I too have sever Scoliosis. (S curve, biggest curve around 62~ degrees.) I have done intense therapy and bracing out in California-about 2,000 miles away from home. My pain got worse, however, and now I’m opting for surgery. The pain is unbearable most days, huh? They use weasel words like “discomfort” to justify under-medicating you for pain. His advice for getting up and walking is good. But it’s not easy to do with Level 8 pain. Though I sympathize with the unemployed coal miners taking Fentanyl, I AM NOT ONE OF THEM. My need for pain meds is short-term and legitimate!

Lemon Lover I’m doing much better now that I’m in therapy and I started working out yesterday. I’m not where I want to be as of yet. But I’m way better then after surgery. It wasn’t easy for me. Not sure about you? I’m gaining my strength back and that helps a lot. One tip I can give you is to keep moving walking is the best.
After my surgery on my fractured l3, they had me stand up a day after. I could barely even take a step. There were pains I never thought I could experience! You can learn a lot just from an injury like that. At the time of me typing this, it's been roughly a month since the Operation. I still have a ways to go until I can walk normally, bend, twist and run. I went from taking 5 medications to just 1. Therapy.is.amazing.

I had spine surgery on the 15th of February! I was waking about 8 hours after, I was in a lot of pain, by the 19th today. I can fully walk, the pain has gone. Bending hurts a bit.

I just had my lower back surgery (disk decommission and coflex device implant) surgery was such a success feeling went back to my leg right after surgery, I am able to perform all push/resist test, which I wasn’t able to do prior. Pain is minimal and 3 hours after surgery I am walking on my own using bathrooms. Today second day after surgery and I am about to be discharged!!! Big big thanks to my Dr.
We are about at the same healing level and I urge you not to fall into the trap of overdoing things!
Due to wanting so badly to recover, you risk everything from your long-term recovery to undoing the benefits of your surgery completely.
My surgery was Friday March 29 and I too was walking without a walker the next day. So when I got home last Thursday, I immediately charged into doing housework and all the stuff they tell you not to do.
Well, I paid for it the next day (yesterday). My pain was greater than at any time since the surgery and I could not find a way to get comfortable. Thank goodness I had some Percocet and I had to take two 10 mg tablets at once to get over the pain threshold. Today I feel much better and am getting up more but NOT working. The last thing I need is to give up a year of my life to a failed fusion. Good luck in your recovery!

carrie b 👋 hi there, it’s a bit more then a month after my surgery and to be honest it’s like Russian roulette: one day I feel fantastic and able to do anything... other days (probably I was doing everything I should’ve 😂) I feel discomfort, not really pain..
My next appointment with surgeon in 2 weeks till then he gave me a list of small workout routine to strengthen my core and back muscle, I do not fallow them lol I do my own (I am a yogi) stretches and strength.
Overall- I coincided surgery is a success, and it’s not as bad as I thought, I didn’t spent a day in bed after I was discharged from hospital, neither was taking any painkillers after hospital. no jumping and running and golf yet , but think a week or two and I will be fully back to normal activities.
O forgot ... I was driving in a week :)

This is all true I had a schanoma tumor surgery with a partial laminectomy last week, and he is exactly correct.
i had spinal tumor t7 t8 , its removed with surgury in auckland nz. it was 8 hours surgery. now its recovery time . hard time.

Had my l4/l5 discs removed and fused back in march.. still in quite bit of pain, fiannlly came off the patches yesterday after a year, that's was my number 1 thing to do was to get off the meds as they do more harm than good, the CBD I've been using has been amazing for my sleep.. I'm praying this procedure has worked, hospital are happy with it, just wish this pain would go as I'm still unable to do most activities.. the worse being not being able to pick up my daughter. I walk everyday around my village, it's just frustrating that unfortunately that's the only sort of exercise I can do atm. Love to all who have gone through this God awful pain and still pushing forward.. cause theres been days over the last couple of years when I really didn't want to carry on, and if you haven't been there then peeps just dont understand how that feels. Thank god for my children, the biggest reason I get up everyday and try again not matter how hard the pain is to deal with.

I had triple back surgery in May 2018 in one week.. I was in house at Kessler for a Month and half.. To this day I still can't walk normally. I'm not in a lot of pain but I get spasms and muscle weakness.

I had a microdiscectomy on 12/6/18. It re-herniated 4 weeks later. Had a failed epidural cortisone shot on 5/10/19. Had a tlif on 6/20/19. Still experiencing popping and the same amount of issues as before. Hopefully over time is does get better.

Interesting reading all the comments with everyone experiences. More helpful thank this video. I had L5-S1 Bi-Lateral Discectomy and laminectomy surgery 8 days ago. Woke up pain was gone and I was walking. Next morning doctor said he didn't like the right leg weakness I still had and did another mri, went BACK in for surgery for a second disk the supposedly ruptured during/after the prior day surgery.
So day three in the hospital, I'm walking and pain is gone. Right leg is week, can't tip toe with it but no need for pain meds. NOW it's day eight and I'm typing this at 3am cause I can't sleep, sharp/tight pain in left back of thigh. It seems to come and go past few days. That said still haven't taken a single pain med and am able to walk, shower etc and it's better than before. My right foot and partial saddle area is still slightly numb. Can't wait for that to go away if it ever does and for this dang leg pain to stop.
I have numbness in my right leg but my back pains are much better since surgery but it's acting up now so yeah I feel you man. I hope you're doing better now xx💕

@@deepalig3938 Its been 8 months, still cant tip toe on right leg BUT calf muscle is slowly coming back. right foot heel and last two toes are still numb, saddle area numbness went away 90%. I think over next year or two the numbess will go away completely and I will get full calf muscle strength back. Looking back it was def. scary experience but having the surgery was best thing. Im back to normal life, outdoors all the time and fishing more than ever before. luckily never had to take a single pain med.

Just checking in with everyone. Im a little over 3 months into the recovery, started PT, i decided to do water therapy to strengthen core. Anyone thats had lower back surgery i highly recommend trying water therapy before regular.

I’m only 10 days out from surgery so it will be awhile before I’m more active but I’m eager to go back to the pool. However, I’m also kind of nervous because last time I went to the pool I was learning how to swim and I was told to kick/turn quickly and I put my back out from the movement. 😳 I’m just wondering how long it might take to get to that point where your core is strengthened enough to swim. May I also ask what type of stroke might be wise in order to avoid putting my newly fixed back in harms way again!

I did a lot of walking the first week I got into the pool. So I could rebuild my legs. I would lay and float on my back and also I took a pool noodle or float and out under my legs at times to do a regular swim. That way I didnt kick so much and force my back to take a beating. After 2 weeks of doing that daily I removed the floats from under my legs and 1 swimming lap..the next week I did 2 and so on. The worst part of surgery for me was getting in and out of bed. So if you got that..you will be good. Really take slow pace and walk and float..

Sir i have l4 l5 s1 surgery 1 month after no walking and hard pain. How many recovery time after lumber fusion surgery?
I am 10 months out of triple fusion spinal surgery and the pain that I have is consistently more than before the surgery. By a large margin. I have been through three rounds of epidural shots to alleviate the pain including and ablation process to kill the nerves and non of this has helped me.
I guess that I am now facing never ending pain for the rest of my days on the his earth.
My advice to you if you are considering fusion surgery is - don’t do it!! Period!!!
When I asked my surgeon how I could alleviate my pain, his response was to say, that I should now consider fusing L5 to S. This is a very difficult operation and one that I could not even consider. Look it up, you will be astonished at the process that needs to be done for this surgery.
I'm fused from S1 to T10. L5 to S1 is not especially bad, having had it done quite a while ago. I have returning Cauda Equina syndrome after two back surgeries 8 weeks apart in 2018, which were supposed to fix it. Strangely I'm considering my tenth back operation. I had laminectomy/disectomy for cauda equina syndrome; after surgery apart from sore scar I was not in pain in my back whatsoever apart from being a little stiff when standing,which lasted only a few days. I have had paralysis in my left foot with foot drop for 6 weeks but getting better every day, it maybe unothadox but I find holding a hot water shower head over the numb areas for 10 minutes or so everyday seems to help... I've yet to thank my surgeon for doing an A1 job. I'm obviously one of the more fortunate ones. 49yrs old! was taking diclofenac and paracetamol for about 3 weeks now only take them maybe 3 times a week. I can not describe the pain I was in before surgery so any pain now is insignificant. Best of luck to all who are still recovering.
Same here, I had 2 bulging discs at 26yrs at 29rs cauda equina l5/s1. Pain was so unbearable before surgery I considered suicide. I now have numbness down left leg that's annoying (especially in my toes) have paralysis in my right lower leg that causes difficulty walking. My pain basically stopped after surgery apart from tenderness in my hamstrings and calves. Wish everyone all the best in situation/recovery.

I'm going under the knife in 4 days time for this exact operation, I'm soo scared but I've had enough of my life its been 2 months that I can walk and get electric shocks down my legs everyday I'm on allot of tablets aswell I just want my life back, feel like a prisoner locked up because walking is so painful

I had a herniated disc since September and then had gone to the hospital in 2019 October 22 and 23 morning I had a surgery and the pain was gone my right leg was a weak and I couldn’t be hard on my toes still stay in bed for about a month now

I am having a laminectomy for cervical stenosis soon. I also have multiple herniations, I am 57 years old and currently very active. I am scared that I will lose condition, gain weight and struggle with daily activities. I live alone and have no one to help me except for a CNA for a very limited time. Not too good... My 2cd opinion surgeon recomended an ACDF- there are more issues with my spine than originally thought. And now I am having problems with my insurance and home care- I am having a meeting with my medical team next week.

What do I do now after FSS after multiple epidural injections, nerve root blocks and multiple spinal fluid leaks and three spine fusions surgeries later the horrific problems continue now I’m being faced with the doctor advising a nerve ablation procedure is needed. I’m highly concerned because the aftermath of epidural injections in my neck left me with Essential Tremors since 2017 because of that I’m highly concerned having anyone get that close to the nerves in my spine. “Is it just me or is there anyone else out there experiencing such a huge amount of bad luck with their spine. To date I’m in pain from my neck to buttocks every day. Increasingly getting worse since my last fusion/laminectomy in January 2017 and I’ve developed adult scoliosis which is very minimal right now not really affecting my spine fusions at this time anyway. I can not do anything physical without suffering afterwards.
I wouldn't have ablation therapy, but I've had nine surgeries on my back and am fused from S1 to T10. I've developed Cauda Equina syndrome for the second time in the same place. I hope you have more success with your back pain.

My fusion was really painful for the first few days but I'm about 5 days out now and with frequent movement and extreme care I've noticed a huge difference in my pain. It almost hurts less than before surgery. I must be one of the lucky ones who took the surgery and recovery really well, and I think it may have been due to my amount of pain before the procedure. The hardest part was probably keeping the drain near me 😂

@@James-to7pi ohhhh that would explain the blood. Immediately following surgery i was being kept on a routine of pain meds to keep the pain down as much as possible but i had to get morphine a few times in the 2 days i stayed in the hospital. After i left the hospital I refused to take my narcotics unless i absolutely needed them, so my pain levels went between 6 and 9 most times. I healed surprisingly fast. I was 18 and relatively healthy when i got the surgery, so that might be why. I hope your recovery goes well!

I've had two major surgeries on L4, L5, and S1. Pain was excruciating afterwards. No one will ever touch my lower back again regardless of how much pain I'm in. Best thing to do is never let anyone operate on your back. Odds are you'll never get rid of the pain you're in. Learn to live with it!

Man the day I came out of surgery I was walking..nurse said to walk to end of hall 4 times by 7am I got out at 5 45 pmish..well thank God she misunderstood after doing 2 times.

Whatever you're comfortable with, though I wouldn't lie on your stomach.
You need to change position to avoid pressure points. If lying on your side, it's best to place a pillow between your legs for support. Good luck!

Desmo Froppy I’m sorry for what you are going through right now. I am on my 4th lumbar fusion (3 weeks ago) so I know your pain. I can tell you that it gets better. You just have to be patient and do your walking and PT exercises. My first 3 surgeries have all recovered with minimal pain (about 12-18 mos.). Hang in there my friend. This 4th surgery isn’t like the rest of my other ones. This one is extremely painful in recovery. I think it is involving something called the SIJ - Sacroiliac Joint pain. Hopefully you are not experiencing this. Best of luck to you!

Curious how much pain should you be in after 3 months? I had surgery L4/L5 Fusion in April, now in August, feel like I did 2 weeks after surgery. But back hurts when I bend slightly forward reaching for door of fridge or pushing glass on water dispenser. Doesn't feel like muscle pain. Pelvic tilts hurts as well. Or moving leaning sideways, and only talking a couple of inches same with bending. Pain after surgery was nothing, off all meds eveb tylenol by day 3. Went home from hospital same day. But doesn't seem to be getting better now? What could it be? How do I know if I should push PT harder or relax. Really just walking about 1 mile twice a day but doesn't seem to be getting better?
They just removed most of my L1,L2, & L3.
Was supposed to be outpatient but its been six days and im still in the hospital. Cant walk anymore. :/
Sorry you have pain bending. That sounds like it may be tightness from scar tissue after muscles tore trying to compensate for the hole in your back? Try to find some mild daily stretching routine to slowly work out those tight areas and see if maybe that helps.

I don’t know how can you type thing on the telephone, first week I couldn’t even talk haha. For the next three months it will be hell, but now it’s been almost 2 years and I feel fantastic. The key is to never stop moving, train well in the gym and you will be fine.

I went to a children surgeon last week for a compression fracture that I’ve had over a year and he ended up telling me that I should just excerise and sent me home with a paper on how to stretch my heels.
I can’t even explain the pain I’m feeling, I cried while making spaghetti because of how badly it hurt and ended up just having to sit on the floor and reach up. Sounds pathetic but I FEEL pathetic. I’m afraid that I won’t even be able to carry my kids. It sounds dramatic and maybe I am..but should I go to a second surgeon for a different opinion?

Be careful because many just see money when there’s a patient walking through their door, I’ve done the surgery in Italy so I actually payed zero euro for everything, don’t know where you’re living. Daughter had magec rod implant early 2022 and left her with flatback-syndrome and post operative permanent neurological deficit.
Post surgery, surgeon explained the intra operative that the neuromonitoring signal disappeared during lumbar screw implant, daughter's leg stopped moving, but they continued with the surgery until the end of the surgery.
After the surgery, her legs started moving.
We're wondering why they didn't perform the wake up test during the lost of the signal.
Daughter woke up from surgery with leg numbness and swallow legs, leg jerking and shaking, hypersensitivity to touch.
2 months post op, loss of bowel and bladder control and it then recovered after 4 months.
Since she woke up from the surgery, both legs were with electric shocks pain from lower back down to both feet, daily. She described as tingling, stabbing, needles pinched pain 24/7.
It's been 15 months post op now, she's still suffering nerve pain daily. Permanent disability as a result of this outcome. Permanently in wheelchair now.
She's still going back to the original surgeon fevery 8 weeks for magec lengthening procedures.
The surgeon claimed it was a successful surgery and she needed to have more PT to get back to walking.
The question now is how to resolve the Neurological deficit and flatback syndrome issues.
She losses her natural lordosis curvature since the op and not able to bear weight to stand or walk upright.
With the 24/7 tingling and electric shocks on both legs, it is extremely impossible for her to be able to stand straight to walk.
Appreciate any input or advice to help her to get back her life.

I'm not sure where you got the idea of a "70% chance of paralysis," but that's just not true. I've had a dozen surgeries to my spine in the last 15 years, so I am very familiar with the risks of complications. I know that the doctors would NEVER do a surgery in which there was a 70% chance of permanent additional injury - particularly something as devastating as paralysis. Maybe they would do the procedure if the risk was 7%, but I believe even that is unlikely. Probably you heard 0.7% and got confused.

I have no reason to lie. 2 different hospitals with the same response.
I've been refused surgery since I was 12.
Sadly my MRI from sept 2018 was very different from 2019. The MRI, CT and Xray I had today showed me how bad it was. My neurosurgeon has his concerns so, he ans his superior will be having a Multidisciplinary Meet next week.
Gave me all the warnings including catheter, Stoma, full paralysis.
Frankly.....morphine has not even scraped the icing off this pain.
I'd sell all I possess just to rid this pain and be a normal fun mum again

I hate to rain on someone's parade, but not all back surgery is successful. Even if it's "a success" you may still be in pain. As you're in your fourth month I'd see your surgeon about the left leg numbness. My 9th back surgery seemed to help but after six weeks all the leg pain returned. Eleven months later it's still there. I'd have to say in my case it's "failed back syndrome".

I’d love to hear from Amaya and see how far along she is now. But I can tell you guys that I got my fusion done in February, a little after I wrote that comment.
I now know what she means about the leg. Yes, I went numb after the surgery. My doctor tells me it will come back over time. So it’s been about two and half months for me now since the fusion and I stretch EVERY DAY for LONG PERIODS OF TIME lol
The numbness is all the way from my butt, forgive me for keeping it real, alllll the way down my calf , heel and pinky toe.
It’s definitely gotten better over time. I feel pricklies, or like static electricity sometimes which means the nerve is still alive.
Be gentle but stretch, massaging is a big help too. My foot was completely dead until I rubbed it and it began to come back.
It’s different for everyone . I’ll come back again in the future and fill anyone that wants to know in on any progress.

Paulo Masetto I have had 3 spinal fusions (L3-S1). The most recent was 3 weeks ago. I can tell you this, you will be able to exercise just like you did before surgery, maybe even better depending on which level your surgery will be. My best recommendation to you is to get more than 1 opinion if possible. I had 4 opinions. I think you will feel better and more confident having agreeing opinions. It’s a good piece of mind knowing that doctors agree on exactly what is wrong and how to go about fixing the problem. Best of luck to you. Did you have a fusion four years ago? If so, you may have adjacent segment syndrome, which is caused by pressure above on the disc above the fusion!

If your surgeon reads your MRI as needing surgery get a second opinion and if they agree get the surgery. If your problem can be addressed via laminectomy rather than fusion that would be great. Recovery from fusion is longer.

I assume you have tried spinal injections of cortisone. If not try first before having surgery. Almost ten years of these injections - twice a year - helped me avoid surgery until recently.

Doctor stated he would recommend surgery, but due to the fact that am an athlete or was and still workout, he told me that many patients that underwent surgery didn't feel better necessarily. So if pain is tolerable not to do it. Pain is on and off, but i just don't trust the surgeries out there.

@@JIANYM36 If the pain is at a point where it's affecting your day to day life and you've had the pain for several months without much relief, I'd seriously consider the surgery, especially if you have numbness. It sounds like your sciatic nerve is taking some bad damage. I had a microdiscectomy last August after suffering for 6+ months of severe sciatica that only got worse as time went on and it was the best decision I've ever made. I'm back to normal again without any symptoms. I say go for it.

Kyle Longo numbness still there but pain isn’t as bad... Depending on how numb your leg is until you have surgery is a big indicator on how long it will take to heal..... I believe that this is just gonna be something I have to deal with forever which sucks but life could be worse

@@annimack1591 that's because they're fuckin sketchy and are too ignorant and arrogant to admit to a mistake... adn they do this with a lot of patients and nobody ever finds out because it's impossible (at least in my state) to prove it. I've tried to record doctors or challenged them in a way about their decisions and they've just gotten up and walked away, or thrown away evidence or lies to my face knowing we both know they're telling lies.

In my view, discomfort is from 1 to 4 on the pain scale. Pain doesn’t start until a pain score of 5.

mahongo mihova I’m not sure so you should ask a doctor, but you should be able to do anything a person without scoliosis can do, however after spinal fusion surgery doctors recommend not doing any contact sports for at least 1 year. Hope this helps 😊
