  • So this is the long requested follow up to my original Hangar Rat video. Sorry it's not a build tutorial, still working on that, but here is a close up look at one of these amazing home made indoor rubber band powered balsa wood aircraft. Many thanks to Ian, the builder of this particular Hangar Rat, for sharing his enthusiasm for this amazing little plane.

Many years ago I recall these were made of light weight balsa wood and light mylar, the rubber motor was available at hobby stores, so you would make own motor. One thing i learned just talking to these hobbyist who built them was that the propeller was also key in making the flight so slow. It was amazing just to watch and see how long the flights could last.

If you look closely at the the vertical stabilizer you will notice a "rudder" which is fixed to turn the plane gently to the right. Thanks for watching!

When I was a child, Brian Wattie showed me how to make this airplane. My friend Bruce Sandborn (deceased) and I made them. We had a little contest, mine flew 56 seconds. I may have been about 10-12 years old.
    Amazing experience.
    I was hooked for life.
I eventually designed my own rubber powered plane called the Squirrel.

When working in Australia back in the 80's, there was an older gentleman that was selling bunches of these kits at the Australian nationals. A real cross-section of flyers (FF, RC, CL, etc.) built one to fly at a local gym after the day's main events. It was an extremely popular and relaxing event! I was happy to max out a few times even though I had little indoor FF experience. Amazing how a little care in construction can improve your flights!

What kind of rubber band is that. Its very soft or hard rubber. Wondering because it flies quite long. Tried to make something like that and used simple rubber band. I ended with rubber band untwisting like in 5 seconds.

A very good all round RC is the Trophy Truggy Flux. It's not the fastest but it's fast enough and has good traction and can run on many different types of terrain. If you want something more for bashing then look at the Thunder Tiger MT4 G3 which is great value for money, if you can find one. I just got the Apache C1 Flux and really like it too, great scale looks. It's probably not going to be a great basher but still a lot of fun.

if you want wanna these go to google and type "Balsa wood aeroplane".And yes that is how it is spelled. The cheapest one is $1.98 and works good but sometimes if you snatch it out the air the wings and wood support snap.

Only problem I see are the missing children from the Science/Math/English class that are learning how to wright and interpret patents. They would learn how to apply those disciplines in a meaningful way that would allow them to connect the dots of: the value of education, better that the disjointed way those disciplines are now taught.

What on earth is that stuff actually called technically?.. "Elastic string"?.. I tried searching for that and couldn't find any. My cat loves it and I want to get some more lol.
Ah, I found some names for it: "FAI Tan Super Sport Rubber" or "rubber motor stock"
Too expensive, think I'll just buy some long elastic bands and tie them together. :)
I'd still like to know if there are any other names for it, surely it's not only used for wind up planes?..

Collins, see the full comments list. I put an internet address where you can find the plans, or you can use the link provided by Leif Vejby. Download the plan, print it, and enlarge it to get a 20" wingspan The download has only one side of the wing shown. Enlarge your print to make that wing panel 10" long. Build two panels and glue them together to get 20". If you are a beginner model builder, check this video frequently to see how the model is supposed to look when complete. There are similar models shown in construction in other videos so you can get plenty of instruction on RUclips. One thing that is different on the Hanger Rat from most other models is the two wing braces that go from the bottom of the fuselage to the leading edge of the wing. They aren't clear on the plan but, you can see them in this video. The plan doesn't show the propeller installation. You can find how-to on RUclips. You can use a preassembled plastic unit from Sig Manufacturing -- see your local hobby shop, also by mail. Same for the rubber and the winder. Also Peck Polymers, Volare, Easy Built and others.
