Happened to me to about a year ago. Played nothing but Dominion for about 10 weeks. I even bought a huge wooden storage box to store all the expansions I kept buying. Then one day I just stopped playing and haven’t had the urge to play again since. Now I have to live with the bloody shame of having a 20 kilo box of Dominion cards staring me in the face every time I look at my shelf.
Well, you can always sell it. Sure there will be people interested. And hey, one day when you suddenly think of the game you may bring everything out again.
The all-in-one storage box is a killer. Once I did that, I stopped wanting to carry it around.. Go back to the normal sized boxes and only play with two or three expansions at a time. It will stop feeling like an obligation and you'll have a better experience.
@@gaebril131This would have been the smart thing. But the purpose of the box was to save valuable shelf space that a ton of Dominion boxes would have taken up and I have since recycled the boxes.
I go through phases. Play it a ton for a month then I go on to play other things. New expansion comes out and I am revitalized and start playing it again. With each expansion, the card pool has grown limitless in new and interesting combinations especially now with landmarks and all those other horizontal cards. If I had to move and could only take five games with me, Dominion would be the first one I'd pick. No shame in owning such a fascinating game.
I so love your refreshingly honest reviews! I hope i can enjoy them for many years to come because they really make my day. I even laugh out loud and have to rewind! Just fantastic stuff! I own Tanto Cuore which is a bit like Dominion only a little more raunchy. Fewer expensions though!

@@petergross7235 I'd say Plunder. It is a cross between Seaside and Prosperity with both (sea-themed) duration and treasure cards. With Base+Plunder you have 25+40=65 kingdom cards, 15 events, and 15 traits, more than enough to play dozens of games before seeing repeat card combinations, and gives you a wide range of both simple and complex kingdoms to play.
I also got really addicted to Dominion last year after I got the Big Box(Has the base game and Intrigue plus some extra base cards so you can play up to 6 people.) And it was the only game my Monday night group would play for a couple of months. For my birthday(in May) two friends got me Empires and Prosperity which really added some fun new stuff and made us get really addicted to it all over again.. And I picked up Seaside the other month because it was on sale on Amazon for some reason. Somehow missed this review even with all notifications turned on. I got the core box out yesterday (it's all I've got at the moment), mate what a great set of games me and my 15 year old had, haven't played it for at least 10 months. Straight on eBay looking for expansions only to realise that no one sells this on!! I'd second a call for you to rank the expansions or at least a top 3 or 5 max as I'll find myself living on a park bench in Dagenham if I fall down this rabbit hole 🕳️, so 2 or 3 expansions would be enough to mix things up for me. I appreciate your non conformist reviews that don't stink of nepotism or a backhander. Keep it coming.
Looking at those cards, I'm thinking I could forget about it. I already have other deck builders with great abilities and artwork. I would play Dominion, but no one I know plays it, so there we are.
Yeah, I don't suggest buying every expansion available because some may vibe better with you than others. In my opinion, there are two necessary expansions (Intrigue and Seaside) and then from there you can decide which other expansion mechanisms would feel good to play with.
I have had the same addiction for quite a few years... as for the mixing sometimes leading to a dud, the suggested mixes between expansion are great (and when you have all sets, more then enough)
I was the same way for a long time. I have a heavy-as-fuck wooden case filled with the base game and probably 8 expansions. Now, I can't be arsed to pull it out, and just play Dominion on my phone when I need a fix. 🤣
My addiction is Shadows of Brimstone. it’s gotten so bad that the Hill brothers know me on a name basis 😂 More expensive than crack, but better value for money. 👍🏻
I devised a board that would generate almost endless VPs. I set up a game against a bot online; some way into the game I was playing my entire deck through for the gazillionth time, amassing points by the hundred, when a message popped up in the chatbox: "wow, you like your points don't you?" I had accidentally set up a game against a real human. I apologised and resigned from the game, as they had no chance by then.
When Dominion came out, I played it at Essen Spiel and I didn't like it. On the nefarious little website we all know and (dis)like, Michael Barnes boiled my problems with the game down to one sentence - a feat that I myself could not have come up with: "It's a mechanism in search for a game." A few years forward, and this mechanism has been implemented in many games that I like a lot better than Dominion: Trains, Aeons End, Clank, and the whole Legendary series of games. Nevertheless, Dominion was the first game of this ilk and therefore should be lauded (as long as I won't have to play it myself.)
Does an app card manger exist? Input the version(s) you have and it randomises in order to prevent broken combos. Probably still a pain in the arse digging through all the cards though.
we enjoy the base game and this is the only one i have bought, i like the simplicity and many of the expansions just seem to complicate this and take away from the OG. Its not the greatest game but we enjoy a round or two when we do take it off the shelf.
Our of expansions for the game, intrigue is probably the only expansion that I would say adds to the game without it actually really changing the core loop. Prosperity and seaside are almost there but the former makes the buy phase almost feel like a second action phase and the latter while I think add some cool cards make it where you need to keep track of extra effects with those duration cards. Empires is the other expansion that I have that changes the game completely adding in a card that you can buy but doesn't go in your deck and a card that changes how scoring can work or give tokens that count towards you score at the end too
Wasnt a huge fan of the relatively themeless feelz, do you have a more thematic love deck builder? Ive tried Clank! but the idea of buying cards in the middle of the dungeon was too abstracted for me...thoughts?
@@BoardGameBollocks Ill look into that. Going to the store and purchasing things isnt abstract, then pulling those things out of your bag (deck) to be able to be used isnt either - so finding one that makes sense that is also fun is on the docket 🤘
I am amazed to find that I have never got into Dominion, because I have nothing much against it, unllike most Eurogames it is player-interactive and easy to grasp. Not sure why it needs an expansion, though.
Expansions are just more cards! And more cards are fun. Not to mention that base-only can start to feel kind of solved if you keep playing it over and over, and expansions prevent that.
Deckbuilder is my favorite genre of games, dominion is the only one that I just hated completely. Have you tried heart of crown? There is a new second edition coming next year, one to look out for. Very underrated, and fixes the awful victory condition of ruining your deck with junk. The arrow system on the cards is much easier to understand too for people who don't really get the play one card a turn.
I've heard awesome things about Heart of Crown but christ, the theme just absolutely tanks it for me. I don't think I'd feel comfortable going up to my family and asking them to play my brand new big titty anime princess deck builder game lmao.
@highfovguy6791 the art really isn't like that at all tbh. Yes there are 6 princess cards, and a couple of forest spirit type cards but none of them are dressed immodestly. It's mostly art of mundane things like fields cities buildings and people doing jobs like delivering post or collecting taxes. Actually look for some pictures of the art. Japanime games gets a bad rep for like no reason. The theme is actually great, the queen has died and 6 princesses have claim to the throne. You as a rich noble have to help the one of your choosing ascend to the throne. It's a really cool race deckbuilder.
Hey, have you played Empires expansion? I had only the base game and asked the community if I was to only buy one expansion that added the most "game" what would it be? Empires was my answer. Instead of just adding more cards with slightly different abilities it adds more and different mechanics. For example castle victory point cards that have abilities. Debt tokens so you can buy things you can't afford but have to pay back. 2 special ability cards that you play with each round that adds some sort of modification and extra ability on everyone's turn. Anyway, long shitty story short, I highly recommend it. I also bough an extra set of base cards and shoved them in the box so I can just play Empires by itself without opening the base game constantly. Another recommendation. Enjoy! 😁👍🏻🥒
I went all in on Android: Netrunner and it died. Then I went all in on Arkham Horror the card game and it is still going strong. It's not just you that goes bonkers over a game and spends way too much time and money on it. I've got Dominion/Intrigue but have only played 3 times.
