The one scene from the book that has always stuck in my mind is Crowley forcing his burning car along by sheer force of will. I was not disappointed :)
That was SICK. :D My favourite scene was the one where they hit Anathema with the car - sorry, Anathema hits THEM with her bike - and Crowley's poking fun at Aziraphale for healing the bike. David literally SANG IT and it was even better than the book :D
I heard in an interview in the scene where Crowley is "having a moment" David asked Neil how he was ment to be feeling and Neil said "the doctor is watching the tardis on fire" David definitely re found his inner doctor and delivered!!!
@aliceramdom.s That’s... That's not the point. But yes, it is a TV show. I am glad you pointed that out, as I had no idea that there was more than the 4th episode. I am so appreciative of your consideration.
I've seen the episode, and the question is about movies that Micheal has been in and (spoiler alert) the team who are answering list a few of David's movies if I can remember it correctly.
@Nellydoodlenoodle I enjoyed the adaptation slightly better too. And I'm usually quite the opposite. I'm usually "the book was better" kind of girl. My friend (who got me in GO) is the same. At first I thought it's because i saw the show first then read the book. I think it mostly had to do with aziraphale and crowley. Everything else I'm pretty much undecided between book and series but I like the series versions of the character a bit better and there was a bit more of them so there's that. It might just be the fact I read the book in Croatian (my mother tounge) and not English so maybe some word play or "spirit" of the book might get lost in translation (there is a factor of that with some other Pratchett's works I read in both languages). Anyways, amazing book, amazing series, love these characters, have been opsessed with GO for 5 months now and this comment is too long so I'm going to stop now.
I love the book so, so much. It's one of my favourite pieces of fiction of all time and a genuinely joyous experience... and I have to say I wouldn't pick a favourite either. The whole cast and Neil and all the others really, really perfected an adaptation of what was a truly fantastic work on its own. There are some things I'd have loved to see from the book, sure, but there are some things I'd love to have read from the show! Anathema, Newt in the modern day, Gabriel and God and the demons below and the absolute sweetness that Tennant and Sheen brought to one of my favourite fictional duos ever.... I could go on. It's not quite the same story, but it captures the heart better than any adaption I've ever seen. Part of me feels like I have to prefer the book because, well, Sir Terry Pratchett is my favourite author of all time for a really, really good list of reasons. But even then, the show has so, so much of his magic in it. Gaiman really, really went above and beyond; I could feel Terry's influence even in those scenes without any equivalents in the book. This man is not dead while his name is still spoken, and certainly not when he's writing through Neil to this day. Neil is the sort of person I'd trust to adapt the Discworld novels, or even Nation, and *that's* rare.
Binge-watched the series last night and am watching it again. It's excellent. I love the way they've stayed true to the book - the Queen songs in various episodes were great, and the bicycle song just after Anathema was hit by the car had me in stitches! I just wish Terry (Pratchett) was able to finally see it.
It had been years since I read the book and I'm rereading it now after watching the series and I was surprised by how many of the lines were from the book because they just felt so Right when the actors said them. There are often movie adaptions of books where they insert original lines but they don't sound natural but with good omens they really succeeded in that and I'm so happy!!
@Rebecca Woolf Definitely! I got both, at various times. The quirky absurdist zaniness of Addams in the matter-of-fact narration and the off-the-wall characters, and the academic looniness of Monty Python in some of the situations like the biblical eras ("Oi Shem! That unicorn's gonna make a run for it!") and the middle ages. Sort of "The Hitchhiker's Guide to Monty Python and the Holy Bible." (I just got Amazon Prime so I'm very late to this party.)
they are both so lovely with each other - there's another interview with just the two of them - complimenting each other - What a dream these two men together - I have to pull Bright Young Things off my shelf again.
The casting in this series was absolutely phenomenal. Just when you think it can't get any better with David Tennant and Michael Sheen, there's Nick Offerman. There's John Hamm. There's Miranda Richardson. Top notch.
One hundred percent agreed. Absolutely. Tennant and Sheen were beyond miraculous casting choices especially; I wouldn't be surprised if there was some intervention from the other side too. I have to say, as well, Adria Arjona was a complete left-fielder and an absolutely perfect Anathema. Truly nothing like I pictured her from the book except in every way that she *was.* That perfect mix of confidence and anxiety and weight on her shoulders as a Very Important Character contrasted with Newt's... everything that isn't that. She felt like the sort of witch that Terry would write, somewhere between Magrat and Susan with a whole bunch of her own style.
Totally agree with Hamm the "series" format worked perfectly - was like watching a great, long, rich, movie that is completely re-watchable. Amazon did good. And probably needless to say at this point, but Tennant and Sheen are incandescent in Good Omens. Beautiful shots, editing - a jewel of a production. Gaiman doesn't plan to make more, but really hope we see more of Aziraphale and Crowley - another 6 hours would be incredible!
@@TheShadowofDormin The mini-series actually goes on for a bit longer than the actual book. But.... MAJOR SPOILERS The crux of the whole story comes down to when everyone converges on the military base, Gabriel and Beelzebub show up, they talk about the "Great Plan", and Aziraphale asks them "But is that the same thing as the Ineffable Plan?" and when they dodge the question, Crowley realizes "You don't actually know!". Known of them ever knew. Then Satan shows up, and Adam reboots reality, which is what he was meant to do all along. Not by Satan, but by God. Thank you everyone involved in this project. Thank you for not screwing this masterpiece up while adapting it to tv. Thank you for being patient and waiting for sufficient technology to be out there. Thank you for visualising my all time favourite book exactly as I pictured it in my mind whilst reading it. Terry Pratchett is proud of every single one of you. Thank you... May Azeraphale and Crowley bless you all!!
ok i like how michael and david actually sit in the same way that aziraphale and crowley sit. Azira is always on Crowley's right side, and Crowley on Azira's left,, i like to think it's on purpose
I`m so glad they made a tv show out of it, I`m reading the book now, I`m on saturday and I think they left everything important in and added the amazing episode of Aziraphel and Crowley developing their friendship over the centuries. 2 hours would`ve been way too short
14:40 if anyone's wondering what episode David's talking about, its Pointless s17ep14. The question was about films with Welsh actors in it. (It wasn't pointless, but it was a close one. Only 4 people could name Micheal Sheen in The Damned United).
Just finished watching the awesome series! It was everything I hoped for and more from the book I read and loved as a teenager 20 years ago. I didn't know that Gaiman was the writer of all the episodes and the showrunner, no wonder it was one of the most faithful adaptations of book to series I've ever seen. Neil is not only a great writer but really knows how to make a TV show. Now we need a Sandman series with Benedict Cumberbatch as Morpheus!
I thoroughly enjoyed the series! It is exactly as I imagined the characters from the book would be if they were in 3D. Maybe it took this long for a reason; it was waiting for the right people at the right time.
I'm pretty sure Sir Terry would have been delighted. I've seen other adaptations of his work and they weren't a patch on this. Looking forward to Good Omens II now.
They honestly couldn’t have found better actors to play Aziraphale and Crowley. Tennant and Sheen have fantastic chemistry. Reading the book, I can’t picture them as anyone else. Loved the show. I only came across it a couple of weeks ago. Binged the entire thing in a couple of days and I’m currently devouring the book. Which is great btw.
god this cast is incredible. just hearing them talk, you can tell they've invested themselves in the narrative and genuinely think about the answers they give. i've been a big fan of gaiman since childhood so hearing him talk about the process was thrilling.
In the 80s there were a lot of great mini series that were adapted from books. I never understood why they stopped making them. Instead of a series jumping the shark when the ideas are exhausted, you can make a series that has a clear beginning, middle and end.
I found it really interesting when they were talking about long form story telling versus something like a movie. I'm about to go into college and really was interested in film production because I've always seen movies as a sort of higher form of visual storytelling, but I'm growing more and more attached to the idea of series. For me the most important thing in a story are the characters (personal preference, I know plot is like super important but I could read a novel about walking across a field of grass if I was charmed by the characters) and you really get to form a connection to characters in long form storytelling. A movie works very well for something like action or horror, but for stuff like fantasy it's incredibly difficult to just make one movie and still be able to properly explore your world and your various characters. I love the fact that I'm growing up in a time where I have stuff like netflix and amazon and etc and I can ravenously consume so many different stories and see so many different worlds, it's truly amazing.
I remember at conventions in the 80s wherever had Terry (or Neil) as a guest, talk was always of dramatisation of GO. And there was always that question of 'how?' And 'how much would be cut out?' Etc. 'What would be sacrificed?' 'Would it be too Americanised?' It's fundamentally English. And we fans of Terry, Neil and GO were very protective of it. When i first heard who had been cast as Aziraphale and Crowley, I heaved a huge sigh of relief. All of us long-time fans /readers of the book had very definite images in our minds of what the two characters should look like and behave - mostly, I admit, based on the back cover of the book on which was a photo of the two authors - who sort of looked like Aziraphale and Crowley. And David and Michael were so inutterably PERFECT for thise roles (to be fair, the announcement I saw didn't specify which one had been cast as which character but I automatically had David as Crowley and Michael as Aziraphale). And Neil would be taking charge - yes! The book and the dramatisation was safe. He would be true to his part-creation and to Terry. I missed the Bikers. I missed 'the others'. I was a little confused about Anathema being American ... but it had the Hound from Hell becoming cute (much to the HfH's dismay!). It had Crowley threatening his plants ('say goodbye to your little friend'). It had most of the elements that made GO so utterly brilliant. And it was. And I loved it. We - who had been fans since its first edition; who had followed 30 years of twists, turns, waiting with bated breath - loved it. It was, in the end, Good Omens the way we had always wanted it. The way Terry wanted it. Thank you, Neil. Thank you to the cast and crew. For bringing to life something incredibly special and precious, and making it the Good Omens we all wanted to see.
I live the format too. It allows for character development of an ensemble cast where a single 2 hour movie has to take shortcuts as they said. Especially for a story like this that relies on nuance to tell a story that you would completely lose in a shorter format. You get to see a collection of stories knit together into a greater story, and see it all from different angles. I loved it. I wish there were more material like this. I also like the reality of it where no one knows if they are making the right or wrong decision at each point, as we all do in real life. So often the correct, or most correct, decision or action is not evident until it is far too late to do anything about it.
And here we go again: Neil Gaiman adding one more reason to a veeeeeery long list of why I love him so much. Talking about his son and Amanda, he's so adorable. *. *
I've started watching this series and half way trough I stopped because I wanted to read the book so badly! So I bought it, read it and went on watching the show 3 times :D
Same. Neverwhere was never given justice with old series, tough for the budget and time it was made, they did decently (and Marquis was amazing ;)). But Neverwhere now could be done so much better and wider and greater...so let's hope this success with Good Omens will point both Neil and any possible investor in the right direction ;)
Ohhhh Neil... oh how truly, genuinely sweet. This was a really interesting video and I love the nuanced picture the cast takes of the world. I'd love to see Tennant and Sheen team up on Pointless too, haha. Also, of course, GNU Terry Pratchett. I can't help but feel he loves this, somehow.
You made a lot of people so happy and Terry could not be more proud what has become of it. Fantastic work, the adaption was made with so much love.... Thank you ALL SO MUCH!! And thank you Amazon for making this possible! I too read the book 3 or 4 times and both, the Show and the book are outstanding
The voice of God was amazing, great subversion of expectation making the Almighty a woman, and especially the way she read the opening was great. I love that type of surrealist humour. "An older philosopher said the Earth was created in 4004 B.C, at precisely 9 am, on the 10th of October. He was also wrong, by almost a quarter of an hour. The Earth was created in 4004 B.C, on the 10th of October, at 9.14 am."
So would I but maybe they should look at doing Strata next before trying Discworld because they've hardly set the world alight so far with Hogfather, Soul Music, Wyrd Sisters, Colour of Magic/Light Fantastic OR Going Postal - Hogfather's probably the best adaptation of a Discworld novel so far and that was only so/so. Colour of Magic was an ATROCITY!
BBC America has greenlit The Watch (a police procedural based on the City Watch novels). While I'd like to see a sprawling intertwining adaptation with the Watch, Wizards, Death and Susan, Witches of Lancre, Tiffany Aching, Rincewind, Moist von Lipwig etc all involved I'll take a Vimes based show. The adaptations that Sky did weren't great (Hogfather had its moments, Going Postal was decent, Colour of Magic was dreadful) but I think they struggled adapting the plot mostly. Discworld needs a TV show where the characters are allowed to breathe organically...the plots were always secondary.
Fran Ohmsford Colour of Magic with David Jason was bungled so hard, starting it with Rincewind making a suicide attempt was like they never even read the book
Even in Neil's hypothetical end of the world he makes me want to sob in to my beautiful mechanical keyboard rendering it useless. I know your game Neil. I know IT!
Forced myself to stretch my viewing over three days (it was so hard to stop at 2eps). It was amazing, for such a limited series I’m surprised at the sense of loss I felt at it ending. I dug out the secondhand copy of the book I brought years ago, planning to read it this weekend. 😁
You guys were absolutely Frigging Awesome in this. I loved it so much. It was so new for something in visual media. I hope that they could make other seasons of it and be as clever.
I've never before liked an adaptation as much as the original book. In fact, many adaptations are cringeworthy. In most adaptations they make changes that compromise the message of the book. Here I love the book and the series equally and enjoyed the fact that whatever changes were made they developed and furthered the messages of the book.
Loved this version. Did not think it was a let-down at all... which is saying something, as I adore Terry Pratchett's work. They did leave out my favourite joke in the whole book, something to the effect (without actually finding my copy and looking it up): "Mr. Young was all in favour of the royal family, though not the ones that threw up on the paparazzi. But then it must be added that Mr. Young thought that paparazzi was a kind of Italian linoleum."
he and pratchett did have a lot of trivia for a sequel (some of the show original characters are from that) so it wouldn't be Pratchett-less even if it might not be as good
It's funny coming back now and seeing them all talk about how nice it is that it's a limited series and there won't ever be more...well that worked out well :P. DEFINITELY not complaining though XD
After Lucifer, American Gods, Doom Patrol, and Good Omens, I want The Sandman to be adapted. But... I'm still at dark about the overall style would be. The Sandman is so surreal, twisted, and noir, that I can only see it as anime (like Pet Shop of Horror).
So I've never read the book but after watching the show I feel like this is one of those things we're reading the book isn't going to ruin the adaptation for you so I'm really excited to read it 😁
"Infamous" perhaps to the near 30% of USA citizens who define themselves as "Evangelical Christians". That stain on humanity attempted to have the series removed.
The chemistry between Sheen and Tennant is phenomenal in the show. Loved the episode about their relationship over the years
Best on-screen married couple ever.

I thoroughly enjoyed the series! It is exactly as I imagined the characters from the book would be if they were in 3D. Maybe it took this long for a reason; it was waiting for the right people at the right time.
Nothing is coincidence. 😌
right......
The show has this surreal and magical feeling. I don’t know, I thought it was utterly marvelous. I’ve watched it twice.
I binge watched this series today, it was amazing! It was even better than I had hoped for, so glad Neil was able to make this adaptation a reality!
It was lovely
I loved Adria's Anathema!
god this cast is incredible. just hearing them talk, you can tell they've invested themselves in the narrative and genuinely think about the answers they give. i've been a big fan of gaiman since childhood so hearing him talk about the process was thrilling.
In the 80s there were a lot of great mini series that were adapted from books. I never understood why they stopped making them. Instead of a series jumping the shark when the ideas are exhausted, you can make a series that has a clear beginning, middle and end.
The best tv series I’ve seen in years.. literally..
The feels when they talk about terry
I loved how they never adress the music in the car always being Queen. Nice little easter egg for the book lovers.
It was simply sublime. I loved the book, and this screen adaptation lived up to all my expectations.
Good Omens is the best thing I’ve ever watched and read and I just love it so much, Terry is proud
I'd sit in a theater for six hours to watch this movie.
And here we go again: Neil Gaiman adding one more reason to a veeeeeery long list of why I love him so much. Talking about his son and Amanda, he's so adorable. *. *
Watching this knowing season 2 is for sure coming out is fun lol
I've started watching this series and half way trough I stopped because I wanted to read the book so badly! So I bought it, read it and went on watching the show 3 times :D
GNU Sir Terry, may your ripples never fade away.
They are both good actors and so handsome
So NOW we have the second season and I wanna see all those interviews (with the same questions) while season 2 is being postproductioned!
It was great, I am now confident this format would work for Sandman (if Neil is involved )
The show was everything we could hope for. Awesome acting, shots, music, storytelling. Just amazing.
I really want to see Neverwhere done like this, it would be amazing.
Same. Neverwhere was never given justice with old series, tough for the budget and time it was made, they did decently (and Marquis was amazing ;)). But Neverwhere now could be done so much better and wider and greater...so let's hope this success with Good Omens will point both Neil and any possible investor in the right direction ;)
And Anansi Boys :-)
"I hope I wasn't a pointless answer"...I like them even more, never thought that was possible
Michael Sheen and David Tenant are both great, versatile actors!!! Seen most of their work...can't get much better!!!!👍👍👍👍👿😇👿😇👿😇👿😇
I would love to see them adapt more of Sir Terry's DiscWorld books into shows.
I know IT!
I watched the whole thing in one sitting and went over my bedtime but thoroughly enjoyed it! I will watch it again for sure!
the second question is funny to listen to after watching series 2 lol
14:51 “I’ll tell you after.”
Is that equivalent with “I’ll tell you later”, Doctor?
Omg the show is amazing! So great!
Ok please tell me that the season 2 coming out in summer of 2023 is NOT just a rumor because I NEED more of this!!!!! 😍
Forced myself to stretch my viewing over three days (it was so hard to stop at 2eps). It was amazing, for such a limited series I’m surprised at the sense of loss I felt at it ending. I dug out the secondhand copy of the book I brought years ago, planning to read it this weekend. 😁
Haven't been able to see this yet. I have been anticipating it for a long while. I love the book.
deborah rabbit white it’s incredibly faithful
@@PatheticApathetic good!
LOVED LOVED LOVED the series It's a must watch
You all carried my dreams extremely well. :)
Well said John Hamm. 👍🏻
He was exceptionally thoughtful and well spoken during this interview.
I just realize Jon Hamm have an incredibly soft voice.
0:00 OK, that scratching is TOO cute 😂😂❤️❤️❤️❤️
there is a documentary about Terry Gilliam failing to make a movie for 30 years
Oh I do love Miranda Richardson 💖💖
You guys were absolutely Frigging Awesome in this. I loved it so much. It was so new for something in visual media. I hope that they could make other seasons of it and be as clever.
Tomorrow the end times begins, TO THE WORLD!
That is a nice and accurate prophecy.
To the world!
@@patrickkershaw4885 Of Agnes Nutter?
If the end was nigh I'd just watch good omens again.
Hello Jiji !
I've never before liked an adaptation as much as the original book. In fact, many adaptations are cringeworthy. In most adaptations they make changes that compromise the message of the book. Here I love the book and the series equally and enjoyed the fact that whatever changes were made they developed and furthered the messages of the book.
Thank you for the interview! I really appreciate it!
I got a heckin Neil Gaiman ad before the vid started. Imma watch the entire 1 mins i have left of it lol
GREAT SERIES...LOVE IT!!!!
CAN'T WAIT FOR SEASON 2!!!!!😈👿😇😇😈👿
Loved this version. Did not think it was a let-down at all... which is saying something, as I adore Terry Pratchett's work. They did leave out my favourite joke in the whole book, something to the effect (without actually finding my copy and looking it up): "Mr. Young was all in favour of the royal family, though not the ones that threw up on the paparazzi. But then it must be added that Mr. Young thought that paparazzi was a kind of Italian linoleum."
"How do we continue this experience" fanfiction! Please don't mar the original story with spin-offs when Pratchett isn't around anymore.
I don't think Neil would be involved in a spin-off , and if he is not involved it's not even worth it. I don't think they would do it.
he and pratchett did have a lot of trivia for a sequel (some of the show original characters are from that) so it wouldn't be Pratchett-less even if it might not be as good
@@celia1888 most of that was put into the tv show already
TV mini series been around a few decades. Finding a network was the problem. Now you can shop mini series to networks and streaming services.
Larry Larry Yes, but not mini series that could be binge watched - consumed in parts or as a whole.
Loved this adaptation!
Let's hope it doesn't end up like Lucifer did, the show's a lot of fun but is a sad excuse for an adaptation lol
This addaptation really needed to have BOTH Neil's ability to write a scene AND Terry's ability to tell a story.
I'll never get used to Tennant with a beard.... I more want to see him with an Ainsley style Master beard now I've seen this! Manscaping for the win!
Neil Gaiman is such a sweet human being.
Drum kit at the end, well done vid you.
So I've never read the book but after watching the show I feel like this is one of those things we're reading the book isn't going to ruin the adaptation for you so I'm really excited to read it 😁
Who here spotted Terry’s cameo in the series?
It was brilliant show! Terry would be would be proud. Martin Sheen for Doctor Who Neil Gaimen as show runner!
*Michael. But yes, I agree
@@RUClassicallyTrained oops yes sorry! typing fast
@@andrewtate4897 No worries! But yes, Michael as the Doctor with Neil Gaiman as showrunner would be a dream come true
Michael as the Doctor would be prfection! But Gaiman's Dr. Who episode was terrible
But then Neil would put off writing new stuff even longer!
Michael stared into space lovingly from 0:09 to 0:45
Miranda Richardson is stellar in her whole career!! Love❤❤❤❤her!!!!😍😍😍😍😍😍😍
Show was amazing and it's one of my favorite books ever. Would love to see a season 2 written by Gaiman. RIP Terry Pratchett.
A must watch show!! Delightfully entertaining 🤗
"Infamous" is a weird way to describe the novel. Beloved, perhaps, but infamous has a negative connotation.
Infamous might be referring to the books reputation for being almost impossible to film.
"Infamous" perhaps to the near 30% of USA citizens who define themselves as "Evangelical Christians". That stain on humanity attempted to have the series removed.
