I appreciate all the writing that goes into your vids and I think that brings a level of quality and re-watch-ability that will outlive 95% of all other woodworking content. I will forget about most woodworking videos 10 years from now but I will come back to yours, even just for fun, over and over.
You and your Dad have good synergy. I thought you guys were just good friends. Having just buried my Dad yesterday, it makes me happy to see a father and son get along so well and seem to inspire each other, you guys are a great team, Thx.
James, I have been woodworking for over forty years, and you can talk all you want. All of your videos either teach me something, or are just plain entertaining. Keep up the goof work. I am considering content creation, and now I can really appreciate the extra time it takes during a project. I may never get any off the ground, but know that I will always be a Stumpy Nubs fan.
Just would like to say "Thank you on behalf of my family and myself". When an on/off hobby ends up being what's putting the bread on the table and learning becomes a priority and need, your selfless sharing of knowledge and woodworking wisdom is worth gold. Hope I may get to shake your hand someday.
I am a recently retired guy who has taken up woodworking as a hobby and I really enjoy watching your channel and learning things on RUclips. Thanks and keep up the good work.
I like your channel. I'm 49 and a beginning woodworker I have followed all of your advice on buying my tools and how to be safe. I have two young boys to teach safety. Thanks for all of your hard work.
Hey Mr. Nubs, I'm sorry to say that it was NOT DIY Tyler. It was me, and I walked toward the bathroom vowing to never again watch a Stumpy Nubs video. But then when you took the time to track me down and apologize I immediately reconsidered. Your website has a corrections page for your plans, I just wanted to tell you about one that you had missed was all. I went to WIA excited to meet some of my heroes in woodworking and ended up pissing off my favorite one. Talk about a poopy weekend huh?
You didn't piss me off. I overreacted. I'm glad I was able to catch you to make it right. Send mail an email through our website about the error, and your mailing address so I can send you something for your trouble.
Stumpy, we have similar experiences. Good on your Dad. My Dad set me up as a sub-contractor/business owner at 15. Today, at 43, I am still spoiled and self employed owning an auto repair shop. Everything else is a hobby for me. Thanks for your well-produced content. I do a lot of amateur filming and for a couple years have avoided doing a YT channel of my fun life. It's hard work. So thank you again.
I like your videos both for their content and your erudition. I was a technical author writing about electronics many years ago, and I appreciate clear, detailed explanations - and the humour is a bonus that keeps me on my toes watching out for the quips. A teensy-weensy point - I understand you holding the sheets of paper, but after you straightened them by tapping them on the bench for the tenth time, it became almost hypnotic watching for the next alignment, distracting me from that 'awkward' story . However, I was glad to see from the comments that it got happily resolved.
As luck would have it, my son and I were just having a discussion about you guys a few days ago, and we agreed that it is amazing how many great videos you put out in such a short time span. They're geared toward our interests, and the humor added to your innovations and creativity keeps up coming back. Projects like the incremental box joint jig, the drum sander and bandsaw are fascinating. Don't change a thing! You're our favorite youtube channel.
Finding out that "The Stache" is your father made me love watching the two of you even more. You are very fortunate to have had someone like him passing on his knowledge, which you are now passing on to the whole world! I have seen my knowledge and skills increase drastically from listing to all the lessons you share. Thank you so much for everything and look forward to what you come out with next.
I grew up watching Norm Abram, when I was just watching out of fascination. I think my first RUclips woodworking video was Steve Ramsey, which started it all off for me to turn my garage into a shop, and start actually trying and learning woodworking. I still enjoy WWMM, but I now watch your videos for exactly what you said: to learn new skills.
Just my two cents the reason I have watched your content is because your videos are different (in a good way) you provide a education along with your woodworking not to say others don't but between your videos and journals and personality it's a great fit. And that was a great story from WIA.
So - my favourite woodworking channels are Stumpy Nubs, and WoodWorkWeb with Colin Knecht. Mostly I watch luthier channels. But James Hamilton's videos have solved some important problems for me, such as: Using a good rip blade for cutting thick hardwood guitar parts (the combination blade burned and left saw marks), selecting the right table saw (Ridgid contractor saw with cast iron top & riving knife). I also purchased a Pentel mechanical pencil reommended by James - works a charm. I purchased several plans from Stumpy Nubs - worked very well. In the future I will be building the Stumpy Nubs drum sander - if I ever get around to building acoustic guitars instead of just electrics. I made a super useful fold-down outfeed table using Colin Knecht's recommended method. Fantastic for my tiny single-car garage workshop. I also rewatch Stumpy Nubs shop safety videos regularly in the hopes of keeping all my fingers and my eyes.
Thanks for the list of channels, having only seen two of them I'll definitely check them out. For what it's worth, the channels I always mention to other people are yours for insights, Katz-Moses for cinematography, Mike Farrington for the soothing voice, Tom McLaughlin for personality and Ishitani Furniture for project process.
I know this video is old in RUclips terms, especially for a channel as prolific as yours. I just want to say that as a newbie your channel is invaluable as a source for that information I need but other assume I know. I didn’t have a clue how to sharpen chisels or buy planes without you. I’d be a liar if I didn’t think Matthew Cremona's Queen Anne High Boy was amazing and gorgeous, but through my own physical limitations I will never build. It is your channel that pushes me forward as I’m only on my first few steps of a journey of a thousand miles. Thank you.
I think your channel is really growing and improving as time goes on. I appreciate the hard work and time you and your dad spend on your videos. Thanks again for sharing your knowledge.
Keep on keeping on! You’re doing great! Ive worked wood, tile, leather, granite and time served in the Army...now in early retirement i run my own furniture business and log mill, glue factory and natural wood finish and preservation business....thanks to great instruction from guys like you. ..p.s...watch your fingers around the blade or you will be “Stumpy” in more than name only!
I have known you as Stumpy since I started looking up woodworking videos over 4 years ago, before that I never thought of looking up things on RUclips for finding tricks to making life easier. So knowing that as well as your first name is just kind of like you knowing me originally as Anthony and now toysoldier (old CB handle, really don't want my full name put out there like that on Google). You were the only woodworking related RUclipsr to say any kind words when my mother passed last year so for that I really appreciate you, and we all have bad days on the job, I am probably going to be working for Department of Child Services soon so most of my days are apt to be horrid considering... Thanks for your free content and yes I do look at things from your sponsors and have even bought a thing or two over the past few years.
Mr Hamilton I watch for the same reasons you do. Much is entertainment some is seeking knowledge. I also enjoy some of the same woodworkers you do and some where new names for me to check out. I have learned a lot about products from you sir. I feel good that I am not the only one whom likes some just due to their personality. Thank you for All you do.
I met you in Atlanta in March (along with a bunch of others), and the interaction you had with me there is still sinking in. Your assessment of the other creators is spot-on, too. Especially when it comes to April Wilkerson. She is near the top, easily, not just because she's smart, but because she is a natural teacher (as are you). Jon Peters & John Heisz do it likewise.
Stumpy, I have watched your videos for a long time and I found myself actively looking out for the VLOGs. I typically don't watch youtube for entertainment but after your explanation and somewhat due to your witty dialogue (only kidding) I had a lightbulb moment. I initially thought the VLOGs had little value but I am watching for the entertainment and your VLOGs definitley appear to have some pre-production thought put into it. I have finally clicked the subscribe button, which I historically do not do. So, kudos to you and your team.
Great Video James it says a lot about a person that is willing one to go bad and make amends with someone they may have wronged.. But it is far greater in my book when they tell others of their mistake... Really shows the true person they are... Your father done a good job... On a side note... You still into high places and cleaning windows? Boy do I have a few I will not every try to get to... LOL!
I really appreciate your information you have put out it has helped me to get better working with wood. I have watched many of your videos keep up the good work and I hope to be as educated on the world of woodworking some day. Again thanks.
Been into WoodMizer, wished i lived were there were trees worth sawing, again. I end up drooling over their wood. Matthews Cremona keeps me waiting for more, so does Out Of The Woods (OTW). Now there's a visual feast, and both make furniture and show off followers' projects. Too many sites, not enough years!
Happy to see that all of your favorites (I know you didnt list them all) are on my watch list also. Had to comment on your story about a bad day. We all have them. Your story though showed class. You didnt have to mention that and no one would have known anything about it. One more reason to watch your channel.
👍👍👍👍👍👍👏👏👏👏👏 great story !!! I saw you in a hallway as well I think were you worn out at WIA . You did say hello to me but I didn't expect you to remember me . I have a little RUclips channel myself I had great time there at Cincinnati . I met a great bunch of people
James Stumpy Hamilton (see, I got it all in one shot), I have a suggestion. How about on your vlog you once in a while do a "Channel Shout-Out" segment where you give mentions to new channels or makers no one has heard of? I know you do, at times, but I am suggesting something more dedicated and recurring. You are a legend, dude. Your endorsement could mean the difference between success and failure for new or struggling channels.
The problem is I'd have to spend a lot of time searching for them, then watching enough of their videos to decide if I can endorse them. It's like endorsing a product, a lot of time and investigation goes into that because folks trust me and I take that very seriously :)
In addition to my all time favorite woodworking inventor Mattias Wandel ruclips.net/user/Matthiaswandel I would include Izzy Swan ruclips.net/user/rusticman1973 Steve Ramsey ruclips.net/user/stevinmarin and the master Paul Sellers ruclips.net/user/PaulSellersWoodwork
Great story! Even more funny after reading the comment just before mine!! I don't usually comment much on RUclips, but that was a great video, good example of humility (after being a jerk first and then realizing it of course) especially for the younger generations to see. True testament of your character running all the way back to find him and apologize after admitting to yourself you were in the wrong, which is no easy task for any of us! Anyways this is already longer than I intended, hopefully you get what I mean and this doesn't sound like total gibberish to you like it's beginning to sound in my head as I write, probably a good stopping point.? Lastly I just wanted to say thanks for always putting out exceptional content that is packed with awesome and useful information that I'm terrible at implementing into my woodworking, but none the less enjoy to watch and try! Along with the dry humor and embarrassing anecdotes makes for one of my favorite channels by far. Back to my crappy workbench and a cold one, cheers!
Just found and sub'd to the channel. Just what I was looking for. Looks like I'm spending the holidays with a hot cup o' coffee and watching your older vids.
Jim/Stumpy, Have cold one you've earned it my friend! Happy New Year. Great story about Mike which some of us already new he was related. LOL! I've been watching most all the folks you mention but sometimes I'm spending more time watching than working????LOL! My wife things your humor is great and follows you on face book. Your imagination, creativity, and intelligence, as well as being a butt head have made you what you are today. LOL! I remember the box build with Charles Niel, and how you have been supportive of Charles along the years. again"Have a cold one, you've earned it my RUclips friend!"
Myself I think I am MORE than a maker as I am a "DO IT ALL yourself" type person!!! I am NOT just working on wood working, I work on cars, I repair my home, and I am constantly working on metal projects, or computers and so on and on and on!! In fact there isn't a lot I can't do!! I can rework electrical, plumbing, and EVERYTHING!! In fact in my life I have learned to do WAY MORE than a lot of people!!! I tinker with all sorts of engineering and technical stuff as well! It isn't easy for me, because in my world I am NOT making money most of the time....so I have had to learn HOW to fix things I want or make things I need!!! Heck I built two additions on my shed by myself because I couldn't find anybody else to help me!! And I love problem solving at times but it does get taxing doing EVERYTHING by myself FOR myself!!
So when are you going to make a woodworking video about River tables? You never make enough of them. Just kidding. All I have to say is whatever it is your drinking in those "cold ones" of yours....keep it up. I love all of your content, from the tutorials, to the vlogs, to the simple jig videos. You have a way of brightening people's day with your dry humor, and I am glad you are living your woodworking dream. That is a very cool story about your Dad and some of what he taught you when you were younger. Sorry about your Mom, but then again not all of us got to live the life of either a Ozzie and Harriet or Brady bunch family now did we?
You may not see this 5 years after posting this but I've been watching your older videos and love them except the square drawer pulls being off hurts my ocd sensor also I like the videos where you wear the Wings hat more than the ones where you don't. Go Hockey Town!!!
Hey, i don't mind the vlogs. Its like inviting a workmate over for a chat if you know what I mean. Mind you it would be a long trip. I'm in the UK and my workshop would not fit us both in!!!
You selection of youtube makers was great, Frank is excellent for imagination and editing also his outrageous vintage equipment, Laura Kampf and Darbin Orvar for the brightness of the videos, the others you mentioned are on my goto list I always find them entertaining. Oh, there is some other guy on my goto list too' "Stumpy Nubs"'
After I filmed this I wished that I had included a lot of others. I like Garage Woodworks, Izzy Swan, and a bunch of others too. But I was running long on the video as it was!
I too cut it short, to much typing. Yes there are more, Izzy Swan is great for his outrageous fun projects and enthusiasm and Steve for his enthusiasm. April has really good ideals for what she films. On & On. ;} Thank you for the reply!
Hey James, maybe you could consider a project. A chest of draws made face frame first. I'm making a few of these and I'd like to see a few different videos. Just wanted to make a video suggestion. If you have done one of these send me the link. Thanks.
I might suggest a new section on the website spotlighting CNC I know your big buck Bank video was kind of your Testament to CNC work but it would nice to see at least the occasional project Geared for the CNC worker.
Great video! I like the bio, it makes me want to watch you AND your dad even more. Keep it up, really enjoyable videos. And that guy you chased after, running to get to him after being mean to him, wasn't me. Have a very merry Christmas!
Great story about Tyler....It takes a real man to admit wrong doing then make it right...respect!! Tyler does have a great channel too. Celebrity woodworker charity boxing match???....no?? ....I'll ref the thing =)
Just now, in the summer of 2020 am I finding this in my youtube feed. Go figure. I think you would make an outstanding educator/presenter at Weekend with Wood in Des Moines some year! Just sayin, dontcha know...
I taught at the Woodsmith Workshop in Des Moines last year, and was going to again this year until they cancelled because of the virus. I also used to teach at Woodworking in America conferences. Maybe some day I'll do the Wood magazine one.
I see all the wood planes behind you.....what are they used for "generally speaking" because I have a set that I am not sure what they are used for!!!!!
If there is anyone to admire, check out EngelsCoachShop. What does he do best? Everything: woodworking, blacksmithing, machining. Brings them all together. Then recreates the 20-mule-team-borax wagons. Then someone lends him the services of 20 mules and drivers n he takes them to D.C. and the Rose Bowl Parade. Or do you just need your horse-drawn Studebaker buggy repaired? New wheels for your farm wagon? You supply the horses. You might have to supply the reins.
I've always found your channel great, and to see the mention of Jay ,Nick and April is awesome,if you don't follow him, I think Izzy Swan is very talented also
This video isn't even about a tapering jig. I guess you don't taper anything anymore ever. Also, Laura Kampf's channel is awesome, I love her honest assessment of her projects
Mostly a joke about the folks who manage to ignore your huge library of content and complain that any given video isn't the specific subject they want it to be about.
My advise is, never explain, Stumpy, because it makes you look defensive, and maybe even a bit guilty. Instead consider the reality that the intertoob maroons outnumber you by the millions. Stupidity is the most common element in the universe. What you produce is fine by us, or else we wouldn't be here. Please don't waste our time talking to them!
I like the videos; if everyones format was the same - it would get boring quick; WWMM; I like to build things; Wood Whisperer; Izzy Swan; Diresta are a few more i like; sure i'm missing a few
I appreciate all the writing that goes into your vids and I think that brings a level of quality and re-watch-ability that will outlive 95% of all other woodworking content. I will forget about most woodworking videos 10 years from now but I will come back to yours, even just for fun, over and over.
Wow, that is very nice of you to say!
Agreed...
You and your Dad have good synergy. I thought you guys were just good friends. Having just buried my Dad yesterday, it makes me happy to see a father and son get along so well and seem to inspire each other, you guys are a great team, Thx.
Thanks for the mention Jim! I really enjoy your talking videos, really fun. Merry Christmas!
Admitting when you are wrong is a hard thing. Loved the story.

Along with the dry humor and embarrassing anecdotes makes for one of my favorite channels by far. Back to my crappy workbench and a cold one, cheers!
I personally think your channel is awesome. Keep up the excellent work
Everyone has bad days now and then. You made it right.. But still a great story..
Fantastic video James. Love it. Thank you for sharing.
Everyone has a bad day some times - kudos to you for tracking him down :)
Good DIY Tyler story. I hope you have the right guy.
Just found and sub'd to the channel. Just what I was looking for.
Looks like I'm spending the holidays with a hot cup o' coffee and watching your older vids.
Funny! These are the same three channels I was thinking of!
Yours is a good channel too. It should have made the list :)
Keep it up, like your techniques and content. Thumbs up from Green Bay.
You're part of a very small group of my subscribed to Woodworking channels, that has not become a Weekly Shop Update channel....thanks for that.
And I love problem solving at times but it does get taxing doing EVERYTHING by myself FOR myself!!
great channels, and a couple I've never heard of, but obviously need to check out.
I took a photo of you and Tiler at the Rockler store when you were there this fall.
It seems like a really popular choice to make your name a brand, I see a lot of designers/makers doing it now
You guys are the Shopnotes Magazine of RUclips. I miss that magazine.
You may not see this 5 years after posting this but I've been watching your older videos and love them except the square drawer pulls being off hurts my ocd sensor also I like the videos where you wear the Wings hat more than the ones where you don't. Go Hockey Town!!!
oh yea james, my buddy matt should have been on that list fer sure....really enjoyed the video.
Hi there from Portugal,
Nice story :D and nice video :D
Obrigado(Thanks)
Hey, i don't mind the vlogs. Its like inviting a workmate over for a chat if you know what I mean. Mind you it would be a long trip. I'm in the UK and my workshop would not fit us both in!!!
Looks like I am a year late, but it is funny you mentioned DIY Tyler since we are all in the same state
Well said. I appreciate your wisdom.
You should check out "Giaco Whatever". He qualifies more as a "maker" than a woodworker, but his stuff is awesome!
those pictures of the window cleaning look like a lodge in the ozarks = specifically southern missouri. You from there?
Hey James, maybe you could consider a project. A chest of draws made face frame first. I'm making a few of these and I'd like to see a few different videos. Just wanted to make a video suggestion. If you have done one of these send me the link. Thanks.
I for one always watch YOUR vlog. Unlike the second best, they are interesting & to the point/s
I think your channel is awesome.
I watch Steve Ramsey all the time!
It depends on the plane.
Keep talking. I'm listening.
I guess I need to step up my woodworking game
Also, Facebook wouldn't let you (anyone) have a personal account under a name that isn't their real name. I remember that being an issue.
It sounds to me like "Mike" is a pretty nice dad.
God Bless my friend.
I cain't believe I'm subscribed to all of the RUclips woodworkers you mentioned
If there is anyone to admire, check out EngelsCoachShop. What does he do best? Everything: woodworking, blacksmithing, machining. Brings them all together. Then recreates the 20-mule-team-borax wagons. Then someone lends him the services of 20 mules and drivers n he takes them to D.C. and the Rose Bowl Parade. Or do you just need your horse-drawn Studebaker buggy repaired? New wheels for your farm wagon? You supply the horses. You might have to supply the reins.
I've always found your channel great, and to see the mention of Jay ,Nick and April is awesome,if you don't follow him, I think Izzy Swan is very talented also
Cool
Just subscribed! Love the format; keep talking BTW that is how we hear you!!!:-)
alain vaillancour made his woodworking video very entertaining you should maybe get a look at it
This video isn't even about a tapering jig. I guess you don't taper anything anymore ever. Also, Laura Kampf's channel is awesome, I love her honest assessment of her projects
What?
Mostly a joke about the folks who manage to ignore your huge library of content and complain that any given video isn't the specific subject they want it to be about.
Where does blue collar woodworking fit in
My advise is, never explain, Stumpy, because it makes you look defensive, and maybe even a bit guilty. Instead consider the reality that the intertoob maroons outnumber you by the millions. Stupidity is the most common element in the universe. What you produce is fine by us, or else we wouldn't be here. Please don't waste our time talking to them!
Dr Drew 😂😂
HEY! Matt Cremona should have made the list! I'm going to write a strongly worded letter and we'll see if we can't get this fixed!
This is a travesty!
You're lucky I'm still subscribed after you omitted Matt from your list :)
He doesn’t need it. Marc Spagnuolo already made him famous :)
Jackman Works Your channel should have been mentioned. Always really cool projects and, I love your taste in music.
Great stuff Stumpy. I mean James or whatever your name is. :-)
I like the videos; if everyones format was the same - it would get boring quick; WWMM; I like to build things; Wood Whisperer; Izzy Swan; Diresta are a few more i like; sure i'm missing a few
