Just found your video - thank you so much for sharing! I've only done straight and zigzag and recently tried to do one of the decorative stitches. Watching the video, I see what I need to do now for a stitch that is "red." Can't wait to go to the machine and try it out. It's an older machine, but works great. (Other than "operator error" lol).
I just bought mine today from a surplus shop. I got it for around $120 (around P6500 here in the Philippines). I think this costs more than $250 if bought as brand new here. It doesn't come with a manual though so I had to research for it. Thus, this video of yours is so helpful even if it is just short. Thank you. I am now ready to sew our dining chairs' cover in preparation for Christmas (actually this was my project a year ago but I didn't finish them because my old sewing machine got broken and I don't have the budget yet to buy a replacement. I'm happy I got this already.
I don't think they make this machine anymore. It is a nice machine if you got one in good condition. I am glad you liked the video and it was helpful. I sold it for 150 with shipping so you paid a fair price as long as it had the cams. Have you been able to find the manual? Singer may have it but I think that they got rid of many manuals recently. I am so happy for you. I leave all my videos even though I sold it several years ago just in case it helps someone out there.
I saw the manual last night but can't download it. Perhaps I will find another website where I can possibly download one. Thanks for this.video. it really helped me a lot!

I just bought this Machine (used) to use for basic straight hemming and patches. Don't know the first thing about sewing but hope to get the hang of this machine and save some money.
Hope the video helps on how to use the machine, there are tons of how to sewing videos. And your local community college should have some very inexpensive sewing classes that you could take to learn how to read patterns how to set patterns onto fabric, classes are always fun and you learn tips and tricks. I've been sewing since 7th grade.
Hello, great video. I have been using this machine for years and haven’t had any trouble with it. As of late, I am having trouble adjusting the tension of the top thread. When I sew any stitch, the thread on the underside of the garment is loose and loopy. I haven’t changed my tension setting in years and it was working fine. I’ve tried re-threading and adjusting the tension knob but to no avail. Things went awry after letting my niece sew with it a bit a few months ago. I’m stumped. Any idea on how to fix this? I know you don’t have your machine anymore... I truly appreciate any help or thoughts that you can provide.
Thank you for your feedback. Your tension assembly is behind the plastic. So its a bit more challenging to figure out any issues. I would first take thread and put it down around and put down pressure foot. Does it change the ease of moving thread through? There could be thread stuck so that tension disks aren't closing properly. The other issue could be check spring. I could be stuck. Without it it will not sew well. Look in your manual and see if it shows how to service. You need to take off front of case to get access to the whole tension assembly. Hope this helps. Also check bobbin area to make sure no loose threads. Probably not as it is always upper tension not engaging that causes loops under fabric. Its always best to supervise anyone using your machine. The check spring can get pushed out of place if there was broken twisted thread and she pulled it out by the thread spool. Good luck.
Okay so this is a drop-in bobbin. Do you have the manual? How long have you had this machine? First I would say look at the bobbin and how it was wound. Make sure it's flowing freely off of the bobbin or that will affect your tension. Next you need to try and take the slide bobbin cover off the bobbin, what's over the feed dogs that should pop up and get a brush in there and get all the lint out. Cuz if it hasn't been cleaned or serviced recently that can affect how the bobbin performs. Make sure you have the right bobbin if you bought this machine used, then chances are very good that all the bobbins that came with it won't fit! The manual will help you on how to clean and maintain, and oil the machine. It's very important to have the manual. You can probably just Google singer 50/50 manual you should be able to find a free download. It's very rare that you need to adjust tension in the bobbin, you usually do that adjustment on the upper thread. You want to make sure that you watch some videos on basic cleaning and oiling of sewing machines. It's really hard when I don't know exactly what you're experiencing, keep in mind that if the thread gives you a bird's nest underneath the fabric it's not the bobbin it is definitely the upper thread tension is too loose. Or there could be lint or thread pieces in the upper thread tension that's causing the tension to not function properly. You may need to get this machine serviced, look for a sewing machine repair place, it really doesn't matter the brand I've gone to Bernina in downtown Garland Texas the guy is fabulous, so I would call every single sewing machine repair, just ask them do you repair any vintage sewing machines? And they probably do if they are any good at repair. I hope this helps you!😢
Hi there again. I took out my sewing machine, once again,, i guess my question and thanks for the video, is i am straight stitching but they are coming out very small. I want to do like a hem on sweat pants and trying to figure out how to make the stitches a little LONGER, if you will. LIke maybe bigger than an 8th of an intch. Sort of like basing. or IS IT basting lol thank you so very much.
I'm sorry it took me a year to respond I never saw this message, hazards of it being an older video. Okay on this machine to make the stitches longer, there is a knob for that. But depending on the stitch you choose there could be a limitation to how long the stitch can be. So you're just doing a straight stitch you should be able to put it on max length for top stitching. Did you watch the video all the way through? Because I'm almost positive I mention where the stitch length adjustment lever is, It is the very big round knob in the center of the part of the machine that connects the top to the base so that big round knob is also your reverse button You push the center of it and that's reverse but the knob has like dots and numbers. If you watch the video again when I flip that top cover up where the cam goes you can see a picture of the knob that I'm talking about it's number 1 and it's the biggest knob on this machine. If you adjust that and nothing changes then there's probably something broken inside. Unfortunately this machine is mostly plastic so the knobs and the levers and connectors, are mostly made out of nylon or plastic so if something breaks in there it will affect whether the stitches can become longer or not. I hope this helps I don't have the manual for this anymore. And I don't know if you even need it anymore. If you still do, write to me again and I will find it for you. Thank you for watching my video
Hello, if you have this machine I am sure some of those stitches in the decorative stitches are stretch. The best way to tell which ones that are is to get a scrap piece of knit fabric and do a sampler and each time you do one of the stitches try and stretch it and see how well it works for you. I saw this machine over year ago so I can't test it out for you. Hope this helps
Please watch the entire video. It answers your question about the cams. It explains how to set your machine to make the decorative stitches properly and then if you have questions...... I no longer have this machine. I can only say after watching the video and doing the steps to make it sew other than straight stitches, you may need to take it in to a Singer authorized repair shop. They can tell you if something is wrong with the machine.
You need a manual so you can understand how everything works. If I were to guess I would start with the bobbin winder. How to stop bobbin winder and release the clutch so the needle can move. Also make sure bobbin is removed and any lint or thread is cleaned. Lastly the motor belt inside could be broken or missing. Google Singer 5050 sewing machine manual, you should be able to find a copy for free. Good luck.
Satin stitch is simply zig zag, and widen stitch and shorten length. You should possibly need to loosen your upper thread tension to make it lay down better. Always use a scrap of what fabric and thread and do test runs and see if you need any adjustments prior to doing so on your project. Good luck!
I have this machine packed and ready to go when it sells. I am not able to make a video for you. Sorry, when I take apart a tension I am not familiar with I always take it apart and keep in order then photograph before I do anything else. Unfortunately a lot of people try working on machines without knowledge on it. I can't tell you how many machines I have gotten that the tension is in backwards, and not functioning. Thing is tension is the most important to making nice stitches. I would say you need to take it to a Singer repair shop. It shouldn't cost much for them to reassemble. Sorry I can't be more helpful.
I had to take the tension knob plate off because it won't stay under the hook that controls the tension. I pulled the knob plate (not the knib, just the piece behind it) and now can see when it slips off. It slips off a whole lot less after I hot glued a rubber earring back on it while making masks lol
I haven't a clue. Sorry, not sure if you can find out by contacting Singer. Since they are a Chinese company now, doubtful. If I were to guess I would guess 1990s or early 2000. But I am probably wrong. It's a nice little machine and I hope it works well for you.
You can do quilting with any sewing machine. Most quilting is done using the straight stitch. This is a great introduction to sewing. It is an inexpensive machine and gives you some decorative stitches and finishing stitches and stretch stitches. Longevity will be the only concern. It will probably last you until you feel the need for more stitches and more space. I think I sold this one for 50 bucks, wouldn't pay more than that for a like new one. I will say this quilting is one thing that I have not done. So I am only giving my opinion. Good luck! I usually tell people to buy the best machine for their budget. It is a tool that you don't want to skimp on. If you want something precise there are a lot of better machines than this. Talk to quilters, join some quilting Facebook pages and ask for whatever budget you are looking at what do they recommend.
I am trying to understand your question. So hope I can help. First thing to do is undo whatever got done. Remove the needle. If you watch my video I explain the nobs. Put them all to make a straight stitch. Remove bobbin and reinstall as manual shows. I am hoping that when you moved the knobs that the needle bar moved back to the center position. There is also a nob that moves needle to the center as well. If nothing moved you may need to oil and get everything moving again. Hope this helped. Good luck!
Watch the video completely and I show you where they go. There are 2 stacks which allows the machine to make the decorative stitches shown in red and blue. I also explain how to set the machine for those stitches.
I sold it. I am not sure if it has two speeds on the on off button, check to see if it has two spots when you push it on usually the first one is slow speed and press it further for higher speed. Hope this helps.
Try changing the needle. Thread the top again. So when you say it doesn't make a zig zag stitch does the needle move back and forth? If it doesn't are you sure the cam stack is seated properly in the top under the lid? There are two cam stacks make sure you have the correct one in. Also what does it do? A straight stitch or a stitch that doesn't look right? If you are doing everything I show and it still doesn't work, you may have a stuck gear or a broken one. You should take it in for repair. Sorry I can't be of more help.
I am sorry, this is the first I saw your question, not sure if you found your answer or not. Are you asking how to tell the difference between the two cam stacks?
