Nice halibuts!! 😀 Solution to 'it looks legal'? Use white out to mark on your rod, 18" for stripers, 22" for halibut. Measure from butt of the rod to the needed measurements. I've done mine and it works!
Rapala makes a cheap Boca grip style tool that has a rust proof tape inside and you can also snap it to your belt when fishing. Saves wounds from nasty halibut teeth as well
Epic day! A little advice: those hooks are a lot thicker than the standard sand crab/mussel hooks and they need a much stiffer and violent type “swing” to penetrate fully past the barb for a solid hook set (especially with that weed guard slowing the penetration). Ask a bass fisherman and/or watch some bass fishing videos for confirmation of this opinion as the hooks and weed guards they often use are almost identical. Once I learned the difference and improved my swing/set I have been landing significantly more fish. And great content btw!
Thanks, Stan! I definitely agree with your commentary. It’s something I’ve had to work on more mentally than physically. I really like how you used the comparison from fishing with sand crabs and mussel meat to swimbaits as that (along with being used to jerkbaits) has created the muscle memory that’s so hard to break out of. With time and practice, I’ll get there🤙
Exactly, I had the same problem going from trout fishing (much smaller hooks) to freshwater bass. And I forgot to add some thing an old bass fisherman showed me. Put one of those smaller hooks up against the swim bait jig head hook and notice the difference in length you have to go through the tough skin and cartilage of the fish to get to the Barb. And keep the surf 🎣content coming!
One way to fish these rocky snag filled zones with a Keitech is using a drop shot rig with a break away weight rigged in . The weed guard and a halibuts mouth kind of works against your with shallow lip hooks vs solid hookups inside the mouth. Keitech's have a Slot cut in them to hide your hook as well.
You’re not lying man. Seen the ambulance come pick people up. Not the way to end a fishing trip. I’ll prob catch crap for this but for me… Vans grip rocks really well. More so than my trail running shoes. Softer rubber I’m guessing. 🤷🏻♂️

Hi Nick, this is my favorite video. I getting the lure but do you mind sharing the color of the Keitech? Also on your other halibut video are you using a 1/2 oz bullet sinker or 1oz. Thanks for sharing your knowledge.
Absolutely! The Keitech colors that I switch back and forth from are alewife and silver shiner. Although I like biospawn lures a little better now. I still use Keitech for sure but biospawns last longer and are just as good IMO. And yes 1/2 oz bullet weight. Just ordered the hooks and lure through your links. I'm thinking of getting the Okuma 9ft rod as well but a bit of my budget at $94. I was wondering if you'll bring that rod to the West Coast meet and greet so I can see it up close I'm willing to spend on it if you highlyrecommend it. I have an Okuma SSTtrout spinning rod but the tip broke and it's not as sensitive anymore.

LC claims their blue package lures are Saltwater grade but they are made with a Whimpey ring and #6 hook that bends on anything over 3lbs. LC has had over a decade to fix the issue yet still sells as is despite thousands of requests to upgrade
Thanks so much for the detailed info in the article and video. Have you ever considered putting weed less hooks on a lucky craft? Or do you think seaweed would still get tangled on it? Lucky craft have been unusable because of seaweed.
I don’t think it’d be “weedless” in the sense that we’d need it to be. The reason these lures are weedless is due to the entire design and LCs just aren’t ever going to be weedless. For a while, I was stuck using LCs only and then I started trying other lures and when I started using swimbaits it clicked… “if your lure looks like a fish… it will get bit”. I know it sounds stupid, but the biggest thing is to have confidence in yourself and your cast/retrieve and put in the time. It’ll work eventually and it’ll work often as you continue
Could be a factor. I think the biggest factor was how bad at hook sets I was when I did that video. It took a while to get comfortable transitioning from jerkbaits to swimbaits and you definitely need to swing hard and decisively with the swimbaits.
