Sweden sends troops to Baltic island as Russian navy steps up presence | DW News

- Russia's threatening stance against Ukraine is sparking concerns that Moscow may also be willing to use force elsewhere.
Sweden has sent troops to its Baltic Sea island of Gotland, following an increase in Russian naval activity in nearby waters. The island is strategically located off the coast of the Russian exclave of Kaliningrad - some analysts have likened it to an aircraft carrier in the middle of the Baltic Sea. Sweden is not a member of NATO and therefore not covered by the Alliance's defense clause.
DW correspondent Teri Schulz spoke with Swedish Defense Minister Peter Hultqvist.

Put'n needs to sell his expansionist dreams to the people of Russia, so he appeals to their nationalism by calling them threats to the entire country, so he can keep the power while standing over the dead bodies of Russian patriots.
Bilateral agreements between Sweden and Finland say both countries will work together militarily against any threats. This holds especially true to the Islands of Gotland (SWE) and Åland (FIN), which are both strategically located in the Baltic Sea. So basically defensive cooperation is well established in the archipelago areas between the two Nordic countries. Coastal Jaegers (Marines), Air Force, and Navy in Sweden and Finland are most likely already stepping up their game, due to the current situation.
If tension rise further in the region and Russia feels its sea route to Kaliningrad is under threat, it may indeed take "military-technical" measures against Sweden and Finland. Not perhaps in the mainlands, but otherwise, against Gotland and Åland, the archipelago in general, and regarding communication infrastructure. While neither Nordic countries are in Nato, there are trilateral agreements between them and the USA, and escalation of conflict would bring US Marines to the area (in addition to the naval and air assets already in supportive role).
Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania and Poland are all part of Nato, and have Baltic coastlines. As they are giving direct material support to Ukraine already, and as these countries enjoy Article 5 support within Nato, US & Nato naval and air assets are very active in the Baltic and Nordic area, and in fact increasing their presence. This alone might trigger Putin in the near future. Some signs of this are already seen, as Russian "civilian" ships are acting in non-standard way near Gotland, most likely prepping for electronic warfare. There is also the question of unidentified drones making flybys near Swedish nuclear plants.
As a Finn (with somewhat extensive military experience in the reserves), it is getting a bit warm here...

@@johnlenin830 Russia recently said if Sweden or Finland joined NATO it would cross a "red line". So that is some sort of threat. But anyway I did not say Sweden and Finland had some disputes whit Russia. Just that Sweden understands it will need to help if the Baltics or any EU country is attacked by Russia. I read a book many years ago (fiction) where when two Countries were about to go to War, they had to take their top 100 Leaders (Presidents and/or Kings), Second in Command, etc. down until the top 100 were selected. They were then taken to an island, given exactly the same makes and number of Weapons, started at opposite ends of the island, and had their War.

Sweden is protected by the EU's mutual defence clause though correct?
They are, meaning that EU countries will be forced to provide aid to any member state that is the victim of armed aggression.
But nowhere it is stipulated that this aid should be in military form. This is unlike Nato, which is very specifically a military defense treaty.
The EU does not have a mutual defense clause. It's not a military alliance, not even a defensive alliance. It's only an economic and political union.
NATO is where you have to look if you want a military alliance.
Sweden and Finland are not in any military alliances, contrary to what anyone else is saying. They have neutral status.
@@Thor.Jorgensen in case of an attack finland, sweden and norway have a treaty, and denmark will 100% join too. Where 2 of those countries are nato members. Plus u really think england, germany, france, Italy etc will stand still if an eu member who is also a western country with such a big economy to be attack by Russia? It would mean a defeat to the west which is something they dont want, plus US would 100% join 1st bc well they dont want Russia to gain power especially in the west, 2nd sweden and US/nato are very very close.
@@mr.darknight416 What is the name of the treaty then? I am from Denmark and I have never heard about this obligation to defend one another unless they are a NATO country.
England isn't a member of the EU anymore, plus during the Transnistria War, ignited by Russia, no EU country got involved, because the country inflicted was not a NATO country.
European Union members have zero obligation to defend anyone. Zero.
That's why Sweden and Finland is considering joining NATO. They would not consider this if it didn't make any difference. If NATO countries promised to defend them anyways, what would the point be in joining NATO?
@TheWeeaboo I am not spreading misinformation. I asked MR. Darknight since he said quote: "in case of an attack finland, sweden and norway have a treaty, and denmark will 100% join too" what Nordic/Scandinavian treaty demands that they need to join the war? There is none.
Plus, you are lying by omission. You're omitting that the Mutual Defence Clause also mentions, "However, it does not affect the neutrality of certain EU countries" Sweden and Finland are both neutral countries. No formal procedure has been set out. The article does not say that the assistance should be military in nature, so countries such as Austria, Finland, Ireland, and Sweden that have a policy of neutrality, can still cooperate.
This all means that, first of all, the clause is non-binding. And secondly, the aid can be as little as sending crackers and water bottles. No military aid is required in the EU, even if the clause was binding.
As a Dane, I would appreciate it if you don't spread false information or slander anyone who has done their research.
This is very unbecoming of a Dutchman.
