  • We all know that Gibson's on a winning streak at the moment. Re-vamping their USA lineups of electrics and acoustics, and recently taking their sister brand Epiphone's electric line back to the elements that players ACTUALLY wanted, proved highly successful in getting their instruments back in the hands of new, freshly inspired guitar players. Recently, they've added the cherry to the top of the cake by finishing up their line of Epiphone acoustics, getting things back to basics and honouring their classic designs, giving them the best 'vintage' treatment possible, while still hitting the right price points. A tall order, but we think they've managed to complete the task!
Jack takes 4 of the new 'Inspired by Gibson' acoustics, an undeniable lineup consisting of three timeless Gibson designs, plus one with a modernised, cutaway-infused twist. If you're a classic Gibson acoustic enthusiast on a budget, or just want a taste of that unique and iconic tone, you're in for a treat.
If you enjoy this video, please be sure to leave a like and comment below with your thoughts on this cool new range from Epiphone. Be sure to subscribe to the channel, if you haven't done so already, and check the links below for more info on these stellar instruments.

I gonna go out on a limb here. For me the J45 stands out here, probably because the middle tones, to me anyway, sound dialled back a little and its just has that well rounded sound that stops me in my tracks and makes me want to listen. Jack - I find your playing is inspirational to the point that it distracted from the review because I was drawn by what you were playing. Would love to play the J45 and the J45 EC and see if they sound that good in real life. Too many times I've listed to reviews and gone "yeah - thats the guitar for me" only to try it in real life and be utterly disappointed. I appreciate the limitation of the technology and a million and one variables that you have no control over. It would have been great to hear the what you played on the J200 played on the J45s for the ultimate comparison. That said, really like the channel and excellent reviews. Keep up the great work.

Excellente, Frontier, Texan, J-200, Hummingbird, j-45. Still waiting to see if they add the El dorado into the fold. I recently purchased the Frontier and it arrived with a fractured headstock, very down about that as of this writing. Anyway Gibson is finally allowing Epiphone out of the basement and letting the brand spread it’s wings a little. These new Masterbilts are superb instruments.🎶

Good video. I've had my eye on one of these for a while. Love the vintage Gibson acoustic but don't have funds. Previous models of Epi acoustics didn't quite make the cut. With a $1000 budget I think one of these might do. In vintage late 60d tone, always favored the humingbird. But from youtube channels it's more J200 first and the J45 and hummingbird tied for second. Very seriously considering picking one of these up in May.

My local guitar shop is a Gibson licence holder and carries the full range in his shop. Last time I was in there I played 5 or 6 Gibson acoustics, but the one I couldn't put down and nearly left the shop with was the Epiphone J200.
Looks, played and sounded great. Epiphone have nailed it with this range.

Actually, the top of the line acoustics are their US made Frontier, Texan and Excellente, created by Gibson in Bozeman.
This import line is top notch and includes solid wood imported versions of the Frontier and Excellente as well. They are often not coating this with thick amounts of poly so resonance is improved.

Hummingbird was the sweetest, good enough for Keef - I can hear Street Fighting Man in it when you played.. It just has a certain sweet frequency that pops out. Similar to how Martins have that bluegrass nasal thing. I does seem like its more of a fashion statement as you see people like Sheryl Crowe and others playing them because yeah they do look uber cool. ... Many Cat Stevens songs were done with Gibson acoustics. SJ-200 .. If you listens to his early 1970s albums the acoustic guitars sound brilliant. It is the standard for anyone wanting to achieve a recorded tone for pop folk. It does though sound like they miced the pick and blended some of that in. Of course it was done on tape and through analog gear. He also likes J-180 and I believe J-45s

I picked up a hummingbird a while back a few months ago, an Indonesia made and initially it sounded good up until about the 9th fret. The bridge was too low, it wasn't set up and it wasn't any fun to play. I spent money on expensive strings Ernie Ball Aluminum Bronze in a gauge down from factory, 11-52. I raised the saddle a bit, it helped a bit but not much. I then broke a G String from tightening, loosening, pushing over to get to the truss rod, etc (go figure on a brand new set the G string, a wrapped string) so I bought a replacement set just for a G string. I still have the rest of that set. I didn't want to mess with it and break more string so I left it and played it for a few months on and off until I had enough, I picked upa gauge up, 13-56 of good old (less expensive) phosphor bronze, thinking the larger gauge might make it playable, no. Same thing.
So I loosed the strings, pulled out the saddle and raised it slightly again. Straightened the neck and that did the trick.
What it left me with is an amazing guitar. Phenomenal. It took a bit of work but such a good sounding guitar. I play it every day. It's sitting on my couch, I don't have a case, I find myself picking it up often. Whether or not it sounds like a Gibson? I don't know, but it sounds and acts like a Mahogany acoustic guitar. It's has traits of what a Gibson Hummingbird is. Sounds good lightly played and it sound great played heard. Projection. A Maple Guitar like the Dove or J200 is nice, they have a distinctive tone, a lot of high end, bright, really cool and nice sounding guitars almost alien but a hummingbird to me from what I can tell is a more traditional sounding acoustic guitar. Tone wise. It's a more balanced bass, mid, high. Next time I need to change strings, now that it's set up, I'll probably use that set of 5 Aluminum Bronze 11's just to see and play them for a bit but after that I'll probably switch back to the factory 12 gauge.
Great guitar though. I love it.

    • @MB-pc4cs
      @MB-pc4cs 2 месяца назад

I've heard complaints people think they sound "tinny" and from what I'm hearing, even on the Gibson side of things, people have their string s set to low. They're grazing the frets. Which sounds bad. IMO. It seems like a trend. A game of phone which has been taking place forever and now it's the norm. Everyone does it. So it seems.
When I have a guitar, electric or acoustic, I want to be able to hammer it hard and still get a beautiful sounding note or chord. I hate fret buzz and I don't like hearing strings buzzing frets. If it sounds tinny make some adjustments.

I've been playing a Martin D28 for 20 years. Love it. I''ve probably had the privelege of performing in front of 150k people all these years. Thinking about picking up a Gibson J200. When I was in college at Texas A&I University in the early 90s the maintenance man at the apartment complex I used to live in owned one and he would even encourage me to borrow it on weekends. Of course, I couldn't pass that up. Unfortunately, he died of cancer a few years later after we'd met. When I think of the Gibson J200, it takes me back to those younger days as a beginner and how lucky I was to have someone encourage me to learn... on a Gibson J200 that wasn't even mine. Nobody would do that these days.

Quite a few people here are unimpressed with the J200. Haven't played that yet, but two days ago I did play the J45 cutaway version. It was smooth and easy to play, sounded really good, and very "Gibsonesque" in tone. I'm tempted to pull the trigger but I already have enough guitars and am waiting on arrival of a Taylor Big Baby as my version of a "beater." But really the BB sounds great, and it's just 5 bills.

Hmm, I've been Jonesing for a new Gibson acoustic lately (contemplating a used Hummingbird Pro on CL) but maybe I'll give these Epis a look - they all look and sound dare I say, "authentic?" (sorry!)...Particularly drawn to the look and sound of that J200...
Speaking of which (and to answer Jack's question) I am going with the Gibson J200 sound that Jimmy Page got on LZ I...he apparently borrowed the J200 from Big Jim Sullivan, a studio session pal of his....Supossedly it was the only acoustic he used on the record - Babe I'm Gonna Leave You, Black Mountainside, Your Time Is Gonna Come ...Good enough for me!...(Ramon Goose did a vid on Page's guitars, Pt.2 focusing on the guitars he used in LZ..There are a few pics of JPP with the J200 and Ramon gives a little more info on Big Jim Sullivan as well - ruclips.net/video/hMmPnmtS2Mo/видео.html)
(Special mention to the Keith Richard's acoustic sound on all those late '60s - early 70s Stones' records, particularly the sound on Sweet Virginia and Sweet Black Angel...Was it a Hummingbird he was using?)...
Jack it is always a pleasure to hear you play the guitar...Look forward to seeing/hearing your next vid on your channel, you always get me inspired to play more (and hopefully better!)...Cheers!

I really wish they would release a master built Dove. Something with the size of the Hummingbird, but the maple back and sides of the J200. But I’m probably being overly picky. ALL of these seem great for the price, and I’ll be checking them out in the not too distant future. I LOVE Gibson acoustics, but can’t see myself affording one in this lifetime…

I bought the j200. It had over 1 inch tall braces. When I strummed it, my wife turned around and said " oh no, send that back" she's never reacted like that and I presently have over 35 guitars hanging on the wall. Maybe mine was a one off bad guitar. Since I know how to hotrod a guitar by shaving the braces it now sounds great but I had to remove half the height of the braces and scallop them. Most don't know how to do that now would even try it so buyer beware.

The J200 Jumbo is the dud in the inspired by/Masterbilt reissue line currently being made for Epiphone by Samick in Indonesia. I had one and got rid of it as it was dull and lifeless and had no sound. The top of the guitar was dead.

I have the new EPI J-200 in sunburst. Fit and finish and setup is perfect on mine. For 900.00 it's a great buy HOWEVER it's NOT a Gibson J-200 not by a long shot. The tone is somewhat thin actually for a jumbo and it has limited sustain. I am going to put on some Daddario mediums tomorrow to see if that helps. It may or may not. Even so, it's a great, well built all solid wood guitar FOR THE PRICE. Looks stunning as well.

I have the IBG J45 and am enjoying it. My #1 player is a J35 and in my opinion easily beats any of the Epi's and is my go to for gigs. However, that being said, I played a gig with the Epi this week and it seems to be opening up and closing the gap with the J35. Looking at price vs difference. The Epi is hard to beat and a quality instrument. It is my #2 and that puts some more expensive guitars in line behind it. My overall opinion is :They are winners and very hard to beat....

As he is a supreme fingerstyle player I was expecting him to play a parlour or 00 size or something like that, so I was astonished when he opened his guitar case and took out a J-200! And it sounded fantastic.
