Hey Sam Hattons Management and Staff need to be congratulated for the amazing job they have done on these new Genesis Coaches. Hattons have lifted the Quality and Detail bar up another notch higher!!! I will be needing to double my order!!
Hi Sam, me and my husband (he has no YT account to react) have been following your channel since quite some time. Hello and a big hand waving for your cheery fun way :) Wonderful, just wonderful. In trains we are not yet (thinking about a lay-out though), but it is an enjoyment seeing the lively OO community across the little pond (North Sea). So many OO Brits seem to have an impressive YT channel. How remarkable. There are some okay HO ones on the continent, but certainly not as engaging as yours. Most interesting is seeing what both OO and European HO entail. We certainly can understand the different approach of products. To us, OO seems more accessible compared to 'made in Germany' or 'Austria'. The latter ascertains rediculous pricings today, up to 1000 Euros for a pro starter set. It's just mad. Yes, the no-fail quality, life-time durability and sheer super detailing may be an argument in comparison, but the cost alone to create a lay-out based on Märklin, Fleischmann or Roco... How on earth do they do it... We would like to start with Märklin, K-track but prices... Anyway, your channel has served as a true inspiration to get started. We'll see :) Keep it up !
You mention across the pond, so that makes you American, not European. Strange you are referring to European model railway makes, not American (US or Canadian) ones. UK 00 stuff is cheaper than European so we are told every time we (UK) moan about rising costs. So why don't you consider building a UK based layout ?
@@andrewdking North Sea :) Little pond then, lol (have always thought that US-UK crossing waters were Big pond but there you go). Have corrected it. Indeed, the 3 makes I've mentioned are most common here to think of, specially Fleischmann and Märklin (Germany-Netherlands-Belgium, having family members in all 3, although us residing in Belgium atm, but both being Dutch born; me German heritage via father). We would prefer 3 rail K-rails (analogue), because of its sheer higher contact reliability and electrical advantages. It's a personal choice we've already made actually. We'll have to find a way around prices I suppose (used I suppose, and European HO makes do offer 3-rail pickup as well these days). We were just stunned by prices from new. I don't know, but UK based would be a bit off here on the European continent. We just apperciate both OO and HO for what they are though. We'll see. These are the kinds of products that OO gets and HO misses out on that really make me jealous. Those look amazing and the variation between different Livery’s is awesome.
Well not quite correct this observation. Fleischmann & Roco had series of the same time period that are wonderfully decorated. There was also the Koning Ludwig train set in the royal colors and superb decoration... and the list goes on if you look carefully with other manufactures like Piko, Trix & Märklin etc. And there are also goods wagons produced by the same firms in that time period that are stunning... *Nothing to be jealous about.

The original nineteenth-century coaches had Mansell wheels with centres made up from teak segments, which provided some shock-absorbing. Since teak is an oily wood, painting them could not give a durable finish with the paint technology of the time, so they were simply varnished to give a brown appearance. Naturally any survivors into the mid-twentieth century had their wheelsets replaced with standard metal-centred wheels, which of course were painted black. Thanks for an excellent review of really good-looking products.
Superb! Love the look of the SECR coach. Thought the red seemed a bit bright at first but after seeing them on your layout they seem to go well with the P Class. Looking forward to getting some for my own layout when they’re released 😁
@@malcolmtaylor518 Yes I'm aware of the K&ESR coach and I'm sure the livery Hatton's have gone for is prototypical. These are absolutely incredible models and amazing value. For your interest... the wheels are known as Mansell wheels. The reason for the brown ring is that they would have been wooden blocks, which acted a shock absorbing, taking out some of the harshness of the ride. There's some good information on Wikipedia.
You need to edit your Comment to correct Mansell to Maunsell. I don't think Nigel ever fitted F1 car wheels to a railway coach. Now you have told me about the wood, I'll have to revisit the wheels on my Ratio SR Bogie Van-B kit to paint them wood brown.

Once upon an ebay site, Kelly found some GWR 4-wheeled carriages for sale. First, she bought the brake coach. Second, she bought three third class coaches. To make a rake of four 4-wheeled GWR coaches altogether. The coaches arrived in one box, alongside Egg Van no. 1 and the 57xx Pannier Tank Engine. Egg Van no. 2 arrived later, but that's to go with a goods train story. Kelly showed the Pannier Tank Engine to her friend, R32 Gaming, in an onscreen video call. She also showed him the coaches. "Don't tempt me," he mockingly pleaded. "You're making me want them." Kelly had bought them for a cheaper price, than what Hattons are offering their Genesis carriages for. "Why not?" she teased back. Then, jokes aside, "Shall I have one or two engines hauling them?" "One," came the reply. "The GWR Mogul." Kelly created a running session with Millie the GWR Mogul Tender Engine hauling the four GWR 4-wheeled coaches. Millie enjoyed pulling her new coaches along the Cat Valley Steam Railway very much. Kelly uploaded a video showing off her new GWR combination. R32 Gaming loved watching the video very much. Sam, you haven't seen the video yet on my channel, I don't think. I tell you no lies, this is a true story from beginning to end. The video of Millie and her new GWR 4-wheeled coaches is on my channel, waiting for you to comment on it. Enjoy.
Another reason for Rapido to do another run of the Stirling single. Now this in demand loco will have coaches to pull. Looking likely after the Rapido UK announcement of a further run of the APT prototype recently.
This is why I love classic british trains. So elegant. Such care in the original design, replicated so beautifully. American Pullman has nothing on the real life counterparts and these models are beautiful gorgeous recreations of the originals!
Wow, can't wait for my GWR rake to arrive Sam! These look outstanding. I added the full brake to my coach pack order and they seem like excellent value based on your comments. Thanks Hattons and thanks Sam for building the anticipation.
Incredible attention to detail. They put kits-made coaches to shame. Very little SECR has ever been available RTR, so these Hatton's offerings will have modellers of that era jumping for joy. It is very good that the footboards are fabricated from metal - plastic just does not have the tensile strength and is very difficult to repair when it breaks, which is easy to do! Thanks for uploading an interesting preview!
@@SamsTrains That green one was fab. The manufacturers need to start making more early locos. Massive potential so that modellers can build railways around the late Industrial Revolution period.
The brown wheel centres are simulating the wooden teak segments centres of the Mansell coach wheel design. In widespread use in the UK from the invention by Richard Mansell of the South Eastern Railway in the 1840s until cast steel disc wheels took over around 1900 or so for new wheel production. A Wikipedia link would explain more but likely not allowed by the settings you choose. So search for Mansell wheel. No relation to Maunsell later.
I love the LMS coaches, they're so sharp! The two-tone roof is an especially cool feature. Hatton's has some winners on their hands. BTW Sam did you ever receive my email with the GG1 decoder function mapping?
I have a couple of the GWR 4 wheelers and they are amazing. My brake 3rd had a stiff axle, but that was fixed with a bit of Bachmann conductive contact lube on the ends of the axle.
Oh Wow, just the 1st one u took out. Sold me and filled me with a mixture of Joy and Envy. ( even if u do have to return them. Which would be Difficult, I guess..!?) The Details are amazing "F***ing Amazing work..!" Yet Another great Reason to keep up on Sams Videos..! Keep it coming Sam, and I Love your Rambles..! However 'left of field' Super information as always..!! Cheers from the Land of Downunder. Kim 😎 Lets hope some Are leftover for us In Downunder land..! 'Cos me Want some..!! 😎
I've always loved smaller coaches like these. They also remind me of some that showed up in very early Thomas episodes, usually behind edward. Much nostalgia for me heh. I think my fav is the LMS livery. Love the red and black. Looks positivly royal.
Hi, sam's train please don't show the Hatton's Genesis Coaches because I have spent over £300 as I got the LNWR, L&Y brown & umber and NCB blue on pre-order. But now seeing the LMS Painted Samples I think I will be ordering them and the one want I will order is 6-Wheel Brake Third,6-Wheel Third,4-Wheel (ex-6 wheel) Composite Lavatory (1st/ 3rd). Can't wait to see the Metropolitan Railway, SDJR in batch 3. But amazing video Sam'sTrains thanks for doing this.
Me too. Because these old coaches are so short in overall length, to give the impression of an express rake to accompany my Rapido Sterling Single, I've ordered about 10 GNR ones with lights. It indeed gets expensive !
When the engineering samples from Hattons looks better than the serial coaches from Hornby... My mission now : get around GBP 500 to buy the ones I want (all big fours plus BR 4). For GBP 31, it's a great model slightly up priced than a toy. To give you a comparison, I've bought a set of two 6 wheels italian coaches in HO from ACME, roughly comparable to the Hattons six wheelers ones, for... the equivalent of GBP 110 the set of two. Hattons have everything right here, this would be a massive hit for UK modellers ! I'm happy to see that I took the right decision to wait for those instead buying the Hornby ones.
Great job Sam , Sam I didn’t order any great western ones, decorated samples come in from hattons, Sam says I better order them all now including great western ones
hi sam. wow i never heard you so excited before, and rightly so. hattons went all out with these coaches. exceptional finish, detailing and liveries. if the end product are like these first finished prototype they will sell like hot cakes.
These look so much better than the hornby ones! I have GWR, LBSCR and GNR coaches on order from Hattons and I still haven't received the LBSCR coaches I ordered from Hornby, so it will be interesting to see which come first.
Very good to see them running without problems. Six-wheeled stock in OO can be a bit chancy, in my opinion. The liveries look really good. I am really looking forward to receiving my SECR pre-orders now.
That's a beautiful set of coaches. My favourite has to be the red 'Departmental' one, to be used with an engineers' train - a very unusual item. The markings look like it's from a period somewhat later than those other coaches, and it's nice to think that some of these coaches had a life long after their allotted time. I wonder if the 'Departmental' will be available in a weathered condition? In reality, I can't see it staying nice and pristine for very long. Especially if it was being used in the post-war BR era.
The Hatton's genesis coaches may be more detailed than the Hornby 4 & 6 wheel coaches. But both can co-exist on the market being good models in their own right. Use both to mix and match. To make long rakes.
I am glad I have the GWR ones on order they look excellent. Definitely looking good but we will have to see what the final production models will be like.
These [Branchline] Coaches are so beautiful. As much as Bogey coaches are pretty, the compact size of these coaches make them feel so snug in a carriage shunting yard.
Branch line coaches, I'm not sure about that ? When new, some were main line stock I'm sure. Anyway, I'm buying 10 GNR ones to accompany my express Sterling Single loco
It was great Hattons loaned you those coaches to check out. I missed the history part, still they look very well made. I'm looking forward to your review of the production series; will there be some historical factuals involved?? Enjoyed the video cheers

I still find a cool that happens is sending you pre-production models of coaches that haven't even been released to the public for you to look at pretty cool hope they do send more and maybe even some pre-production locomotives
Wonderful looking coaches, I’m looking forward to getting mine. Looks as though I may have to order some other types one day, I hope production runs are long as I don’t want to do so all at once.
You fail to mention the Stroudley look at the end of the brake on the Hornby coaches which particularly suits LBSCR and Southern IOW versions behind a Terrier. Hattons' don't have those windows. But they do have a SECR set which Hornby don't have! Swings and roundabouts.
Yet another great review but in one of your previous reviews to the keen observer you did give your address. As an ex royal mail employee these are the little things we in the trade notice. As regards hattons well I could tell you dome stories but I won't. Keep up the good work
Any chance we could get a video comparing the Hatton's coaches to their Hornby counterparts? Not wanting to spark a controversy, but 1. it would help with deciding which to order to see them side by side, and 2. I'm trying to model a set of coaches like these for Train Simulator and it would be invaluable to see in detail the similarities and differences between the Hatton's and Hornby variants.
I would add 1 more test: how the coaches handle "close couplings" (since the buffers ain't sprung type i don't require the chain-link test), if you have some around!
Looking forward to the LNWR versions which I hope to convert to GNSR livery. Wow, I have a Hornby 6 wheeler and it doesn't run freely, no needle point bearings. I expect hattons will be better.
These really are stunning. I'm still holding out for the second batch for other livery options, but damn if the GWR and LMS ones aren't insanely tempting! I'm currently planning on taking the LSWR ones, to go with my T9.
... Well ... After having some of these amazing looking coaches on order for over year and a half ..... Hattons has just cancelled my pre order today - just as the delivery day arrives.... So it looks like I won't be enjoying them .. The Reason "We have now received our finalised numbers for these models and due to the popularity of this project, I am afraid that we are having to cancel your order as we are unable to fulfill it." ... This to me indicates they were not counting the preorders, and allowing orders that could NEVER have been fulfilled - 18months ago. Hornby got a lot of stick for Hattons cancelling their preorders in the past - but these are Hattons OWN products... I could put an order in for the next batch - and wait ANOTHER 18 months - but what is to say this will happen again. .. I would be interested in knowing how big the problem is with the Genesis coaches - It can't just be me.... Sorry about the tone - But I was really looking forward to seeing these in the 'flesh' - as like you said they are so far ahead of anything before.
Just scored myself the Australian Railway Models C38 Loco and matching Lima Coaches I really hope you're able to get your hands on a C38 in future, Australian trains get so little attention ;-;

Cheers Ian - yeah the GWR ones really shine don't they?! :D
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
They look superb the genesis coaches. I already pre-ordered the LNER versions and can't wait till they became available. Rob
Thanks Rob - very good choice, I can't wait either!
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Thanks for a great video Sam & congrats to Hatton's for these splendid coaches. I have a couple of GWR 4-wheelers on order - can't wait to get 'em!
They look great and I will order a set.
My main criticism would be that the couplings look too long.. too big a running gap
Awesome Paul - yes that's true, but they are NEM, so no huge issue to change them!
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Which would be Difficult, I guess..!?)
The Details are amazing "F***ing Amazing work..!"
Yet Another great Reason to keep up on Sams Videos..!
Keep it coming Sam, and I Love your Rambles..! However 'left of field' Super information as always..!!
Cheers from the Land of Downunder. Kim 😎
Lets hope some Are leftover for us In Downunder land..!
'Cos me Want some..!! 😎
I'll probably get some of these they look stunning
I sure am doing - they really do! :D
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
I've always loved smaller coaches like these. They also remind me of some that showed up in very early Thomas episodes, usually behind edward. Much nostalgia for me heh. I think my fav is the LMS livery. Love the red and black. Looks positivly royal.
They look brilliant
I agree!! :D
Can't wait to see the
Metropolitan Railway, SDJR in batch 3. But amazing video Sam'sTrains thanks for doing this.
Me too. Because these old coaches are so short in overall length, to give the impression of an express rake to accompany my Rapido Sterling Single, I've ordered about 10 GNR ones with lights. It indeed gets expensive !
That southern brake coach looks great with the lighting! I really need to get some more OO things
I agree Will - and that sounds good! :D
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
They would look good behind the Caledonian single wheeler Sam
Nice 1800 style ish
Thx Ben :)
Great job Sam , Sam I didn’t order any great western ones, decorated samples come in from hattons, Sam says I better order them all now including great western ones
Lol
hi sam. wow i never heard you so excited before, and rightly so. hattons went all out with these coaches. exceptional finish, detailing and liveries. if the end product are like these first finished prototype they will sell like hot cakes.
I honestly don't know which to buy! There all amazing!
haha me too - I'm struggling myself! ;D
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
They are lovely.
Hard to send them back.
Well done Sam 👍🏻
haha it was actually... hopefully they won't notice if a few were missing ;)
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
I already ordered a pack of the LMS livery, and based on this video I will not be disappointed! Wow! 😍
Excellent review as alway, just waiting for my order of LB&SCR coaches.
Coming along well I see. Good video Sam love your disclaimers.
I love the LMS one
The Hatton's genesis coaches may be more detailed than the Hornby 4 & 6 wheel coaches. But both can co-exist on the market being good models in their own right. Use both to mix and match. To make long rakes.
When i saw the video and thumbnail i knew it was gonna be great.
I agree - they really are aren't they?! :D
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Branch line coaches, I'm not sure about that ? When new, some were main line stock I'm sure. Anyway, I'm buying 10 GNR ones to accompany my express Sterling Single loco
Lovely! I have some four wheel SECR coaches on preorder. It is bliss to have something to look forward to!
It was great Hattons loaned you those coaches to check out. I missed the history part, still they look very well made. I'm looking forward to your review of the production series; will there be some historical factuals involved?? Enjoyed the video cheers
Tbh I'm more interested in phase 2 as it has GER liveries but this batch does look pretty good wonder how long till we get a set in Gresley teak
Wouldn't it be interesting to see a Deutsch Reichsbahn loco on your layout? There's something about their design that is so appealing
It would be very - I'd love that! :D
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Just one thought about lighting. Gas lighting did Flicker.
My Nan & Grand dads house in Befleet Essex. Had limited And Dangerous Electrical supply. (1920s Style )
And at Night she would still light them. ( it was one of my Dads little Jobs to Change the Mantles inside them.)
G'dad couldn't because he Had an Arm shot off from some person @ Chocolate hill Suvla( Suva..?) Bay Gallipoli 1915.
So found fiddly stuff a tad Difficult.
But He also bought me my First Triang Train Set for Xmas. ( joint effort between G'D & Dad, I think..!)
His Day job was helping at the Local Vets and Stables. ( One Armed man using a Shovel..?) Not much of a Pension I fear..!!
I digress, Gas lighting did flicker somewhat..!
Thanks for all who Served. 'Lest we Forget'.
And Sam for taking me back to my youth again..!! 😘
0:13 on the one side we have a GWR 4575.
0:17 on the other side, we have the savage Beatie well tank and a P class.
I still find a cool that happens is sending you pre-production models of coaches that haven't even been released to the public for you to look at pretty cool hope they do send more and maybe even some pre-production locomotives
It is super cool - it's very good of them to do that, and I hope it's worth their while!
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Keep up the good work
Following on from my last comment about the steam train trip I have booked, it's The Jacobite train I am going on in early September
Nice Sam you now have a superb 4 and 6 wheel coachs enjoy its mate ow god it looks lovely
I really hope Hattons make these again but for n gauge because the gwr chocolate and cream coaches would look really nice with my n gauge 61xx
I've been looking forward to these, I hope they turn out brilliant
I do too - fingers crossed!! :D
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Looks like I’m going to have to make my own in N gauge then :)-Ben
Awhh sorry to hear that - imagine these in N?! :D
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
I would add 1 more test: how the coaches handle "close couplings" (since the buffers ain't sprung type i don't require the chain-link test), if you have some around!
Beautiful coaches, my personal favourite has to be the GWR livery. What’s your favourite?
0:19 That Beatie Well tank with the southern coach is really growing on me.
Those coaches with those locos, especially the P Class....visual feast!🙂
I agree Ian - would love to see a few more SECR coaches behind the P!
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
@@SamsTrains perhaps it’s too late a period but I would love to see City of Truro haul some of these too😃
Maybe you can add ballast to that track, you know the one you use for reviews , it might look better.
I wish I had some coaches like these for my train set?
You can tell they wanted to show off the great western livery- they packed a lot of those in there!
haha yeah - I reckon they must be proud of those! ;)
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
I love this vid, also I just got HO troublesome truck 1 and 2 today!
... Well ... After having some of these amazing looking coaches on order for over year and a half ..... Hattons has just cancelled my pre order today - just as the delivery day arrives.... So it looks like I won't be enjoying them .. The Reason "We have now received our finalised numbers for these models and due to the popularity of this project, I am afraid that we are having to cancel your order as we are unable to fulfill it."
Great vid sam, cant wait to get my hands on some of these
Great videos keep them coming mate
Just scored myself the Australian Railway Models C38 Loco and matching Lima Coaches
I really hope you're able to get your hands on a C38 in future, Australian trains get so little attention ;-;
Like the update very much.Hope there more
Thanks very much Dave - I hope so too, fingers crossed!
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Wow... the Departmental BR version is excellent
I've pre ordered 6 LNWR coaches and also the hugely expensive Bachmann LNWR Improved Precedent (£220) from RoS. Let's see!
Awesome video today Sam beautiful coaches I really like the gwr ones and the lms ones
Hey Sam - I do like the 6 wheeled Carriages (Or can we call them a 0-6-0???) b/c they are different from the either 4 or 8 wheeled Carriages!!! Would be nice if the buffers were sprung!!! 🙂🚂🚂🚂
