This scene is everything I love about BETTER THINGS: the humanity, the generosity of spirit, the desire to celebrate life, the open-hearted embrace of different types of people and depiction of different types of family, the honesty of the story-telling, and the curiosity about, and love of, humanity. Thank you Pamela Adlon for this gem of a show. Thank you, thank you, thank you.
This is probably the best Martha cover I have found. Randy Rainbow has the perfect voice for this song, gravelly and sweet in all the right places. I would love to see this released as a single.
Randy brought this up in episode 9 of his podcast (new episode uploads have been paused since June of last year) and I looked it up on RUclips search. It’s fascinating and I might watch more of these episodes. ❤
Beautiful song - I discovered this through this scene that this is a song by Tom Waits - he was just 23 when he wrote this. This particular version is quite touching and so emotional. This was the best episode of this season so far!
Randy is such a marvelous actor, as well as, of course, a singer and performer. This song and scene moved me to tears during the show. Oh, how I love it.
Big Randy Fan... stumbled on this scene while binging on Better Things. Sooooo great to see him in this acting role and sharing this side of his talent. What a treat. Have been enjoying Randy’s youtube talent to get me through the Trump Travesty and Corona Blues, but this side of humanity just made the tears flow with his performance.
Just stumbled across this episode as well. Honestly I had never seen the show until now. Randy's talent and wit has helped get me through those as well. Here I am watching his performance a second time and again here come the waterworks!
Beautifully said. Watching this scene over and over at 3:00 am in Boston. Randy is what's getting me through this horrible year. And now I find this. Life is good.
@@jackee1054 Meeeee 2!! I LOVE him for those four years of horror, I saw this episode last night nd at first didn't visually recognize him. Then he spoke. I got my husband to listen. THEN....the song. Oh my.
I didn't know this song before Better Things. I immediately had to find out more. Other versions are great but this one really has a lot of emotion. I knew Randy Rainbow from his hilarious parody songs but his voice is beautiful.
This was the most beautiful scene in the show so far likely clinched another season renewal alone. I hope these guys have more appearnaces in the next season.
I love this show so much and this scene is just so perfectly done. The production value of the series is incredible. I particularly love the scene design and color of this wedding. I live in New Orleans and work in the film industry - I am sad I missed when they were shooting! Pamela Adlon is my hero. And now I'm a fan of Randy Rainbow!
Randy Rainbow, that was beautiful. Maybe you could sing more songs like this. It reminds me of my Momma and Dad. You guessed it, her name was Martha. I would love to play this for my Dad. He's in a nursing home and doesn't have much time left, before he joins my Mother, Martha. I love you, Randy. You bring so much joy into the world. Please don't ever stop singing. 💙
I wouldn’t have thought this song would work for a wedding because it’s a song if lost love. But it totally changes the feelings behind it and it becomes such a poignant live song. You can really tell how much the characters love each other.
I've seen so many great things on TV since the Pandemic began, and Randy Rainbow's performance of Tom Wait's song, "Martha," is my favorite so far. Wow.
Bette Midler performed this song on SNL in the 70’s, and it devastated me. Better Things is so beautifully nuanced and heartfelt. Pamela Adlon is magical.
scot schy Yeah that version is amazing, I love the little lyrical changes (Tommy!) and this version is definitely a nod to Bette’s, the women backing vocals both come in at the second chorus. There’s audio only on RUclips. I have that Season of SNL on DVD and I’ve gone back and watched a few times since seeing this on Better Things. I hope they do another season!
You're videos always make me laugh (and, boy, do we need laughs right now), but now you've made me cry, Randy Rainbow. Great to see you on Better Things and even better to find this clip on You Tube. Have been a Tom Waits fan for a LONG time (like when he first started - but, really, I was a very precocious child) and your version of Martha is wonderful. Many thanks!!!
This gets me everytime... Everyone has a Martha, the one who got away... Thankfully these two were smart enough not to let their Martha go... Beautiful moment, mr 🌈
A close friend turned me on to Tom Waits in the early 80s. "Martha" has made me cry for 30 years now--doesn't matter how many times I've heard it, and, apparent to me now, whether it is Tom Waits or Randy Rainbow singing it. 💖
I wish we could see RR do more traditional acting like this from time to time. How novel to see him interact with people who are in the same room as he is. What a beautiful and nuanced performance this is, both the song and the acting. I SO want to see the whole episode, but I'm technologically impaired, and this season of Better Things doesn't see to be out on DVD.
I just purchased tickets to see the fabulous Randy in San Francisco in September and this came up on my feed as a suggestion. I’m so excited to see that MY Randy is acting. #WorldFamousRandyRainbow! 🌈❤️
I didn't realize you were married-I am so happy for you both. Congratulations! I hope you have a life filled with love and laughter and a lot of success. Love your videaos.
Woo Hoo!! I finally joined the 21st century, installed a Roku, and subscribed to Hulu. First thing I sought out and watched was this episode. Lovely, and funny with lots of RR moments. Still would love to see him stretch a bit and do more traditional acting.
One of the best shows on TV. On FX. Pamela Adlon is brilliant! She’s the shows creator. This scene is one of my favorites out of so, so many. Check it out Jory Lewis.
Lovely song love Randy rainbow!! But its a bit odd for a new wedding...with no Martha, isnt it? !! Mind you i dont know the series...wish i could see it!!
Just go to his RUclips channel and enjoy the ride. He's super talented and incredibly funny, but seeing him in this kind of a role left me speechless and wanting more. I'm a huge fan and you're about to be as well. Also, Randy Rainbow is his real name and he certainly brings me hope.

Such a treat to hear Randy sing an entire song. Boy did he ever deliver. Incredible voice. Love you Randy.
A trifecta: this song, this show, and Randy Rainbow.

I am 76 and never heard this song. Called my daughter and she gave me origins. Love it and always cry.

Awesome, Randy! Why we don't see more of him on TV is beyond me. He is a truly gifted guy! I look forward to seeing more of him, everywhere!
"We're not crying, you're crying." Wrong. We're ALL crying.

Randy is the smart , funny, handsome guy who helped us through the pandemic . His talent is endless 💙
So well said! RR is truly a hero to so many with his talent for insightful humor and exquisite crooning - what a national treasure!
I've probably watched this 25 times, one of my favorite moments ( and the graduation dance) on this absolutely magnificent series.

As someone whose name actually is Martha, it's so nice to hear this sweet song with my name in it. Love "Better Things" and also Randy Rainbow.

Such justice to this wonderful song. Thank you! And, yes, we're all crying.
How can you not LOVE HIM?
Two great things that go great together-- Pamela Adlon and Randy Rainbow
Make that three ... and Tom Waits.
No acting required that day, I’m sure. Wow he crushed that.😢
Such a beautiful song and love Randy singing it.
Randy can adapt his voice to suit almost any song. Love this and I love Randy. ❤❤❤
I really cannot watch this enough. Every time with eyes filled.
Just heard the original version both made me cry what a beautiful song
What is it
Original song
A close friend turned me on to Tom Waits in the early 80s. "Martha" has made me cry for 30 years now--doesn't matter how many times I've heard it, and, apparent to me now, whether it is Tom Waits or Randy Rainbow singing it. 💖
Waits was so terrific. Randy is such a talent, and a good person, too.
Congratulations, Randy! Happy for you. Blessings in your marriage. You’ve made so many of us smile, at a time when it wasn’t always easy to.
Beautiful. Makes me wish I had a wedding like this and a love like this.
I only heard this song for the first time half an hour ago but it’s one that you feel like you’ve known all your life (if that makes sense)
I have NEVER cried so hard than in THIS episode.
Love this version. Love this series. Both flawless
I never get tired of him singing this song. xoxox
I thought I was the only person who played old Tom Waits at my wedding! Fantastic.
I have cried to the beauty of this several times
Thank you Pamela for this beautiful scene.
This show was too short lived
Oh Randy, that was beautiful!

I did not think it was possible to love Randy Rainbow more .....I was wrong!!!!
i do not have TV don't know what this is, but this man is perfection
I love this. Thank you, Randy Rainbow!
The very beginning sounds like Jim Croce ...wonderful Randy , as usual😊
Oh Randy is such a treasure😂
Ear candy. Eye candy. Magnificent.
First how I ever heard this song it is so beautiful
I cried when Sam was holding hands with the cab driver they just met.
I thought that was the lady sitting next to Maneesh on the plane that almost caught fire where he met Sam...
I still can't bring myself to watch the last season of Better Things, I am saving up my tears first.
Beautiful version, nice scene
This makes me cry every time! Love is Love ❣️
OMG. Randy Rainbow just made me cry. #BigGurlDown
Oh no, I'm definitely crying. Now i have to listen to the original. Thank you Randy.

Who is dis guy.
Why is he singing it to his husband?
They never explained in the show, but it's probably "their song."
