  • A video compilation of the island of Montreal’s second significant snowfall of the Fall-Winter 2020-2021 period.
This system, a Nor’easter, yielded approximately 21 cm of snowfall at the airport, and closer to 15.5 cm over greater Montreal. The system first remained to Southern Quebec’s South as it moved East, over the Atlantic, affecting much of New England significantly. At it began to travel North over the Atlantic, it began to retrograde farther West slightly in the process, allowing the bands of heavier snow to reach far enough to the West to reach the island, and as far SW as Cornwall-Morrisburg (about 31 cm there, similar to around the Monteregie-New York border). With increasing intensification, strong NNE winds (which are a key characteristic in which these systems inherit their names - “Nor’easter”) developed. A maximum gust of 61 km/h was observed at the airport, but sustained winds were frequently between 35-45 km/h. This created near-blizzard like conditions during the evening. Snowfall began but about 8:00 a.m. EST, February 2nd (Groundhog Day) and started to ease near 1:30 a.m. February 3rd. Snowfall rates of 0.5-1 cm/hour were generally observed, but rates 1.5-2 cm/hour were briefly observed during the afternoon and mid-evening before easing after the mid-evening.
Footage was taken in SW Pierrefonds, located in Montreal’s West Island. Radar imagery is courtesy of Environment Canada.
