This channel has given me a better understanding of why the anvil is shaped the way it is.

Fantastic work. I appreciate the care given each horse you take care of. It's a blessing to know that each horse is treated individually and treated accordingly.

This young man is very knowledgeable and was so kind and gentle with the horse. The shoe making fascinates me. I hope the horse is in rescue.

I have seen horses where the whole sole comes away because of an abscess which had been there for months though the horse appears to be sound. With a foot abscess, in the UK, it is common for the vet or farrier to find the entry point and cut out enough to allow it to drain aided with soaking and poulticing, then plugging with cotton wool, whereas in the US it seems more common to let it burst out at the coronary band.
The latter seems to take a lot longer as it is working against gravity plus can damage the coronary band perhaps leading to the hoof wall cracking.

Since I don't know all the details, I'll try not to be too judgemental, but I think a vet and farrier would be the FIRST phone calls I'd make before considering the death sentence. Euthanasia would be the option only if all treatment failed.

I'm not a farrier, but From what I saw. Excellent job to take the pressure off and give time to heal. Kudos for not putting the horse down too soon.

There is a saying that I heard years ago that I will never forget: ‘When you hear hoof beats, don’t go looking for a zebra. 90% of lamenesses are in the foot!’ If you have a horse that is lame, get those hooves checked right away!

Wow, no wonder the poor horse was lame. That must have been incredibly painful.

No wonder this horse was so lame, that’s a massive abscess

Between biologists joking about horses barely being able to stand up with their anatomy and comparing cow hooves being to simple to treat; I agree "HTF do horses even live?"

How do you determine the length of bar stock that is needed to make the shoe? Thank you

You measure all hoofs all around and split the total by four.

May i ask, what is the black thing you apply on the sole?

    • @Patchesmama21
      @Patchesmama21 2 года назад

I’m not a farrier but my guess would be like a polymer clay or something similar. Pack the abscess to help protect the abscess from infection and give the shoe something to hold on to. Again, my best guess. Please feel free to correct me.

Geez, poor horse - they were going to euthanize him - hope he’s okay, happy and healthy now.

What is that black stuff he put in the area where the abscess had been?

Looking at the amount of work it takes to make those shoes makes my inner businessman cringe. I would have a small plasma table to cut plate to spec then do some “finish forging”. The time savings would pay for the machine in 6 months. He could double productivity

That's not what he is doing. He is teaching how to hand-forge. The new farrier is free to innovate when he gets his own practice.
