I'm curious as well when you said concentrated nitric acid was used in this video how concentrated was the nitric acid used in this video was it 68% nitric acid used in this video ?

Very cool. It reminds me of something that happened a few years ago when I was recovering some gold from scrap. When I went to precipitate the gold instead of falling as a powder it coated the inside of the flask like a gold mirror just like the silver did. I'm not a big fan of the look of gold but this was beautiful. I tried but I was not able to reproduce it and I have no idea how or why this happened.

What's optically the best coating for a first surface mirror? The inside of the flask looked highly oxidized. It would be cool to see how reflective the inner surface would be after a quick dip in liquid chemical silver jewelry cleaner, and to see how long it would take to tarnish in air.

This reaction is VERY useful for copying holographs embossed on plastic, SWIM has had mixed amounts of success using this mirroring solution to copy the holographs on the back of the lamination of non-state-issued identification cards. Wash off all the adhesive, silver the back of the laminating plastic, coat it in a thick layer of copper using electrolysis of CuSO4 mixed with PEG 3350 (MiraLax), peel it off, and emboss it onto some transparency acetate with a cookie sheet and a clothes iron, inkjet print a reverse image of your definitely-not-edited ID on there, trace in your UV markings with the invisible ink pen from the book fair in middle school, and slap it on the solvent-washed remains of your dad's Blockbuster card with the clothes iron again and you got a damn good fake ID.

I have spent several hours watching your methodology/protocol and I have become a fan. It is a shame that home Chemists get a bad rap these days. They think all your doing is criminal in nature. if you had a laboratory at home back in the day you weren’t a terrorist or making drugs, you were an innovator - someone using the beauty of Chemistry in the pursuit of knowledge. ~Strike

i wonder about mixing in a serious thickener agent, altho i guess potential interference/participation in the reaction would have to be checked, seems like it should be possible at least to add it to one of the reagent solutions. The idea would be to more easily coat a surface with less material, including say the spiral of an old cooler (*condenser).
And yea about the aldehyde group: need a "reducing sugar"
