This is a graduate level Playa Tips video. It's about one of the 10 principles of Burning Man, and how to understand it. Gifting took me several years to get and has become the most transformative part of my Burning Man experience. (Lustmonkey.com for all my Burning Man videos)

My first year was 2010. This year is 2018 and will be my third year heading back out to the Playa. It is so true that you were able to capture the essence of giving. The ability to freely give does make this world a zero-sum game. I once heard that poverty is not defined by the lack of resources but rather by the lack of ability to give.

Halcyon, this is Luca, Fausto son. I really love watching your videos with my friends and explaining all about burning man, you and how I met you and who you are. My dad said you and I can change the world. I hope I can give you a hug this year.

I have been sharing this video, not for its Burning Man content, but because it is so good for life. I'm a Scoutmaster and this is one of the lessons we are teaching the Scouts. Thanks for being a great instructor.

fantastic video. gifting was the best part of my burning man experience, both receiving and giving.
for giving, my favorite was one day when a member of my camp gave me a plate of watermelon to gift (that was a gift in itself!). when i gave out the watermelon to the people on the street, i got the most amazing beautiful feelings from giving and the heartfelt thanks the people expressed. such a blessing.

I may not ever get to go to Burning Man for various reasons but I love the principles, especially this one! I try to take the gifting principle into my everyday life, by helping people if I can. I love putting a smile on a stranger's face! Today I bought a cake for a homeless man and the feeling I got from his surprised happiness was amazing! He told me I had made his day, it was just a lovely feeling.

Always my favorite explanation of gifting. Well done Halcyon, i'm still reeling from meeting you briefly and you gifting me a bag of ice in 2018. Paperboy here.

This is so true.. I just give a gift out of love, that is my reward, your experience of my gift to you. Oftentimes though later, something, I need just shows up from out of the Universe. That is playa magic at its best. Gifting is simply something done with love. Thanks for posting this!

A hug can be a gift.
Good conversation, an insightful moment, people think too often of the material gifts. I'm glad you touched on this :)

You are amazing!! I'm a burning virgin this year, and I've been doing endless amounts of research trying to prep. It's rare to find someone with such a fantastic ability to articulate not just the type of behavior that happens on the Playa, but also the real meaning behind it. I specifically really appreciated your point about how to 'receive' a gift, I'm someone that feels the need to reciprocate so the idea that it takes away from the 'moment' was very eye opening :) Thank you!

Halcyon I can't tell you what a GIFT this video has been! I'm really involved with Alchemy, the Georgia regional burn, and I've linked to this vid (and many of your others) so many times on Facebook & in discussions where people were asking about gifting, be what to gift or trying to understand the gift economy...you've opened many minds! I had to cancel my 1st trip Home this year, but I hope to get to give you a hug on the playa next year! Happy burn & come join us at Alchemy sometime!

I've never been to a burn event before but I'm going to be attending my first at Euphoria in Georgia. Thank you so much for these videos! They're immensely helpful. I do a lot of kindness work here in Atlanta but I honestly hadn't thought about my reactions when someone else might try to gift to me. It's easy to give and not so easy to receive. I think this experience is going to be a really good lesson in learning that it's ok for others to just gift something to me without my gut reaction of guilt or feeling like I have to give in return. It'll be good to learn that it's ok to receive kindness as much as it is given to others. I'm truly excited about this! I can't wait to start giving out the little stuffed bunnies I'm making!

@JetBurns: I like that story. You gave them the gift of this wisdom.
Graciously accepting a gift, genuinely showing gratitude, is in itself a gift.
I was fortunate to have learned these lessons a year or two before I discovered Burning Man. I dated a moderately wealthy woman for awhile, and she would pay for dinners and occasional airfare and hotels. Nothing crazy extravagant, but a lot more than I could afford. Learning to accept her gifts was one of the best gifts I ever gave her.

I'm so glad I found your channel. I'm going to my first regional burn in January and gifting is the one concept I was having a bit of trouble understanding. Now I'm REALLY excited to go, because I know exactly how I'm going to contribute when I get there.

Since this is graduate level coursework: this concept of gifting is particularly pertinent in terms of this year's theme. Ethnographer Arnold van Gennep, author of "Rites of Passage," would pair nicely with fellow classic Anthropological text "The Gift: The Form and Reason for Exchange in Archaic Societies", by Marcel Maus. Thanks for helping us think this concept through!

Great video, Halcyon. I've always lived my life with this attitude and it's brought me so many great experiences and rewards. It allowed me to travel in Europe for 2 years with no money. The easiest way to make a new friend is to help a fellow human (or animal) in need. The lesson in this video is so profound we've added your video to our website. Thanks! - Darren

My first burn was life-changing. The reason I had so much trouble with gifting at first was because I grew up surrounded by a close-knit group of extremely selfish people and this pretty much killed my faith in humanity. The first few hours at Freezerburn were a bit difficult, but once I let my guard down I was like a little kid all over again. I even broke down crying for a moment near the greeter station, and it was incredibly liberating. Next stop; Myschievia! :D

ah how beautiful!! i went to the hemp fest festivals and it was very cool, but i was at a storm with myself! but last time i was gifted a burrito and water by a nice old man!! i was just waiting out in the sun, and also got strangers to come to me and letting me buy hash, pretty cool, and just trying to wait for my group, and listening to a random boho awesome nomad looking dude with a pup playing guitar. i wish to always experience more and try to do more, gift connections!!!

If it's something you want to do, spend some of your energy that you have been investing in hoping on planning. Find a theme camp that matches your interest and sign up. I'll cost you a couple or three hundred in camp dues, but a decent theme camp will provide you with valuable infrastructure (kitchen / meal plan, communal shade structure for your tent, showers, and a peer group that includes some veterans). That makes your first burn a whole lot easier.

@JetBurns (continues)... stop and take their money back. This was her "gift" to us. Her celebration that she wanted to celebrate that even though we were her bosses, she wanted to gift to us.
I told everyone that we must learn to receive without reciprocation, and that is new, and hard to understand. I emailed them this video link. Thanks Halcyon for a great video explaining a wonderful concept. She paid the bill, and we were all happy. Win+Win+Win.

I was at a business "happy hour" where a developer just completed her 2 year assignment, a big deal. She invited her multiple bosses including me to the happy hour. I noticed she got the bill which had to be about $300 or more. I objected and me and another boss got the money to pay the bill because after all, she was the one that did all the hard work and we are grateful to her. Then I saw her face sadden, and I remembered this video. I told everyone throwing money to... (continued)
