- Rosy barb an amazing fish which can be kept in a planted community aquarium. The video is intended to help give information and tips on how to care for Rosy barbs.
Firstly, a little insight of their natural habitat to understand their requirements and behavior is. These amazing fish are native to Asia, which includes India, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Nepal etc. Now largely popular as an aquarium fish, they are introduced to other locations as well. In the wild Rosy barbs inhabit a wide range of water bodies from slow moving rivers to streams, lakes and ponds. These omnivorous fish feed on small worms, insects, insect larvae, crustaceans & plant matter. In the wild they are know to reach size close to 6 inches, however in an aquarium the maximum size is around 3 inches. These are egg laying fish, they scatter eggs usually on dense vegetation, in an aquarium breeding rosy barbs needs special set-up. Which I will discuss in future videos on them.
Scientific name - Pethia conchonius
Male Rosy barbs are more colorful, they develop pinkish red coloring under belly during spawning season, they also have a black spot on thie dorsal fin, on the other hand female Rosy barbs are deeper-bodied without dark coloration and black spot on their dorsal fin.
Rosy barb aquarium care guide -
Tank size - 20 gallon or bigger for a group of 5 to 6. Rosy barbs are shoaling fish, hence should be kept in a group and compatible tank mates can be included.
Tank mates for rosy barbs -
I have kept them with clown loach, yoyo loach, tiger barbs, blue gourami, red tail shark, rainbow shark, garra rufa, pleco, Tinfoil barbs, swordtails, L.guntea, platies, black skirt tetra etc.Just makes you don't have slow swimming fish with long fins.
Tank set up for Rosy barbs -
They like a well planted tank with driftwood, rocks and dark substrate. Rosy barbs tolerate moderate water movement, make sure the tank is nicely aerated. Plants you choose should be thick leafed plants as they are know to nibble plants. In the video you would see Anubias nana, Vallisneria, Echinodorus
Water parameters for rosy barb
Temperature range - 64.0 to 73.0° F (17.8 to 22.8° C)
pH range - 6.0 to 8.0
Water hardness - soft to hard (60 to 180 ppm)
Food for Rosy barbs -
These fish are omnivores, they eat almost everything you give them like pellets, flakes, freeze dried worms, live food like daphnia, micro worms, mosquito larvae, I feed tetra bits & spirulina based pellets to them as stable food.

Rosy Barbs are cool !!
Hi I have five rosy barb and there aggressive towards my coradoras they rip there fins what do I do.(10 gallon tank)
Corys are not compatible with Rosy barbs & 10 galllon is too small for these fish. They require 20 gallon at least & they seem much behaved if kept in a group of 8 or more
Nice informative video 👍
Thank you Brian :)

Interesting!
Yellow and blue gorami sathe me rahegi kya?
Mein toh blue Gourami ki saath inko raka tha. Just keep 6-7 Rosy barbs.
Gorami fish k sath tiger barb re sakti hai?
Tiger barbs would start picking on the slow moving gourami. You need to monitor your tank for any aggression.
Hi, can you keep together a mixed group of different types of barbs as in 1 rosy, 1 tiger, 1 denison, 1 gold...? or do they have to be the same type per group (tank)? I just got into fish keeping and I really like these guys but don't want to have regrets later.
barbs should be kept in at least 6 of their our kind. Tigers and odessa are better with 8 or more.
I have a 15 gallon with 5 platys (with fry but I’m going to sell them) can I put just one rosy barb in with them??? (They’re variatus platys)
Hi there, Rosy barbs get aggressive if not kept in a group of at least 5 or 6.
Aqua Kri oh ok. I won’t get one. It’s just because I saw a video of someone saying they could be kept alone. Do you think I could add some zebra danios? I’ve researched them a bit already but I just wanna know if I’m wasting my time before I continue researching?
My tank is usually 22℃ but due to the recent heat waves...It's gone up to 25℃. Would that be a problem for my baby barbs?
Hi there, I don't think it will be a problem unless the temperature fluctuates or changes suddenly, I only face problem, when there is sudden change in temperature jumping 3 or 4 degrees in a day. So 25°C is still safe for the baby fish.
@@AquaKri thanks! I was really worried they wouldn't adjust since my tank (with a lid) is evaporating 1-2 litres water a day....
@@ytl9558 I live in a tropical country myself, temperature here goes beyond 25C, I never faced any issues with the fish I keep or breed.
@@AquaKri thank you so much for answering my concerns :)
Does anyone know if there are jumpers as I'm thinking of putting these in an open top tank
They are extreme jumpers, you need a cover :)
