As a lay woman I have worked in the church for over 50 years. One of our priests committed suicide on the parish grounds. I have sat with many priests who have questioned their vocations because of back-biting and gossip and criticisms. I have dealt with seminarians who are struggling with the troubles in the Church. A close friend left the Legion and his brother, who was ordained left. What is clear is that priests are under attack from all sides and we have forgotten our duty to pray for those who have authority over us. Diocesan priests are particularly hard hit because so many now live alone and priestly fraternity is a rarity. Circumstances make true friendship next to impossible which adds to the suffering. God bless you.

I wanted to be a priest but my diocese decided not to move on with me. I was honest about my past and everything going on in my life, spiritual, psychological etc. I was devastated but now I'm glad that they chose wisely. I've grown as a person. If anyone thinks they're called and begin applying it is imperative they are honest about everything in their life, even scrupulously. Better to be rejected honestly than accepted deceptively.

Bravo! I am an Oblate of the Order of Saint Benedict. Here is a prayer of exorcism against satan: “Vade Retro Satana! Numquam suade mihi vana! Sunt mala quae libas. Ipse venena bibas.” In English, “Be gone Satan! Never tempt me with your vanities! What you offer me is evil. Drink the poison yourself.” Monks are fine examples of people who pray.

In my youth (the 1970s) I saw many priests and religious leave. It was heartbreaking. I used to look down on them as having broken their promises and vows. Worse than even divorce. As I matured, however, I began to see them and the thousands who have left since the 1970s in a more nuanced light. Perhaps it wasn't all their fault? For some of them at least, the religious order (or diocese) that they may have joined in the 1950s was radically different by the 1970s. So much of what they knew had changed or didn't even exist anymore. I suppose it could be described as a case of "I didn't leave the Church -- the Church left me." I learned not to judge souls; that's God's prerogative. Our job is to pray for healing all involved, including the lay faithful who may have been scandalized.

I think all that psychological counselling stuff from the 70s up to recent times damaged priests and religious because the counsellors had agendas that contradicted good spiritual formation. I think they chose immature people and drove the sound ones away. They set people up to fail.
It is not the faulty choice of candidates it is the fault of the people who chose them.
Like you say go back to the desert fathers and mothers, and the spirituality of those religious who brought the faith to so many around the world through their genuine loving service.
Every order or congregation that no longer has vocations went down the path of an overemphasis on disordered psychology instead of spirituality and good formation, especially biblical knowledge and good exegetical skills.
When I look around my church and see people of every race, I think they are only there because a genuine well formed missionary evangelized them.
How do you expect the laity to become good Catholics if all they get from the pulpit is Dad jokes and social justice politics.
It is all very well to reach out to those who struggle in life, but unless you are aware how that person harms themselves and others by clinging to a disordered way of living, you cannot help them.
A priest told me I had to accept those who harmed me, because God understands them. I told him that the excuse I use every time I do something really stupid or wrong is that God understands why I do it.
A lay person, a priest or religious who uses the same excuse for bad behaviour will spiral down into despair very quickly.
But it is worse for the victim of the sinful person who is told to accept the person who harmed them, as if God somehow accepts their behavior. Why do you think the victims of paedophiles lose all faith in God? The crime of the perpetrator is added to by the crimes of those who cover it up and silence the victim.
A seminary formation based upon "God accepts you as you are" theology is not only immature, it is dangerous.
I am critical of the emotional process that keeps people as victims of immaturity, and drags everyone down with them.
I agree that God does not choose perfect people, He chooses people He can work with. God doesn't keep people in diapers emotionally either.
Did Jesus die on a cross so that people could be accepted as they are, with no need to turn back from sinful living and grow in spiritual maturity as a person?

Its all very well to say there needs to be a time of discernment and cleansing and better priestly formation ... ... ... ... ...yes, but. Yes but the mess that there was ( not only the Legionaries) was in part because those in positions of leadership made certain decisions. They didn' t encourage mature men , they encouraged immature and mixed- up men. They failed in their duties to provide good formation. We are entitled to hzve our feelings of being let down by them. Evety time thete is another scandal of a paedeophile priest they say mechanusms will be put in place, lessons will be learned but it goes on. They go on in their old habits of covering up, there is a next time.

Yes. I was educated by the Holy Ghost Fathers, a missionary order. A group from the Legionnaires of Christ actually came to our school to talk about vocations to the priesthood. The person giving the talk looked barely older than us schoolkids. The talk actually troubled me - because the kid, and that is what he was - was asking us kids to consider the priesthood as our vocation. The men who taught us were priest who were men. The kid talking to us that day? I thought he had been brainwashed - I actually felt sorry for him. And I say that in a sincere and charitable way. I would definitely question who saw fit within that man's family to allow him at his age to enter a seminary, never mind become a priest. But it is the spiritual formation director who I hold responsible for allowing men not fit to be ordained

Hi Robert, St John Henry Newman can teach us a lot about how to revitalise and renew the priesthood, especially in English-speaking regions. Loneliness, desolation, and fragmentation rarely serve God. While the Oratory of St Philip Neri might not suit every priest, the idea of bringing them together into groups with different charisms or allowing them to marry, like Ukrainian Catholic clergy, could make a positive difference. Please bear with a friendly reminder, pointing fingers can give off a judgmental impression, so let's keep that in mind.

  • @seamusweber8298
    @seamusweber8298 4 месяца назад +2

Who saw fit to allow these men to become priest's? I ask this not as a criticism or to attack anyone. Surely the character of each seminarian is assessed through seminary, to try to ensure that they possess the qualities necessary to thrive in their vocation and to be able to discharge their vocation well, safely and in a fulfilled way? It doesn't serve anyone - the priest, the parish, the church - to have clergy who are not formed properly. If a person has issues - he needs help, not priesthood.

Can't understand why someone would castigate you on being a friend to that Priest, so sad.
I hope your right Robert, God bless.

I had just watched the full video of that PAGAN service.
My conclusion s that if whoever preceeded over that shambolic sacrilegious ceremony do not resign immediately including Cardinal Dolan then the Holy Father must dismiss them immediately If that fails then the Holy Father must step down himself before God the almighty tales action against them.

Thanks Robert. I agree with and understand your situation aptly explained.
My earlier question about why you invited the former priest and his partner? to your home was a sincere question meant in charity. If it did not come across that way, I apologize. I see a difference in asking the former priest to your home as an act of charitable friendship. Inviting his partner changes the nature of your invitation. It’s essentially the moral issue that is raised by the inherent confusion in Fiducia suplicans; specifically , is the blessing of homosexual and /or adulterous couples an act of affirmation of the sinful relationship?
You do good work for Christ by your blog. Keep it up. I will do a better job of clarifying my comments so as to be better understood thereby enhancing what you are doing and contributing to the good that you do.

    Hello Robert .
    Peace Blessings Light Hope Faith.
I am not up to date on this topic and reply to whatever the issue.
What I will say is that the catholic church has been served by many gay men down the decades .
They have gone to Rome and other continents etc.
    Their reasons are many ??????.
It's too complex to get into for many reasons .
Providing a seat at the table for anyone to eat , is a wonderful gift of offering , all person's should be willing to be open to this .
Of course there are challenges for everyone, let God decide who's wordy when we pass , while on earth let's try to be kind but not naive .
Praise be Jesus praise be his holy name.

There are way more fantastic Priests than bad ones. Also they are human beings with usually tender hearts - as they are anointed. Mother Mary have them over to our care , we should respect them, help them and include them. They are our Christian family . Pray for them and be kind. Often they like Jesus are most scourged from with in . Thank God for them every day. Put the angels around them. Smile and be kind. Thank you as God is at work in them.

1Peter 2:4 " Come to Jesus, to that living stone, rejected by men but in God's sight chosen and precious, and like living stones be yourselves built into a spiritual house, TO BE A HOLY PRIESTHOOD, TO OFFER SPIRITUAL SACRIFICES....BUT YOU ARE A chosen race, A ROYAL PRIESTHOOD, a holy nation, God's own people, that you may declare the wonderful deeds of him who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light.....you are now God's people....now you have received mercy." So, I am of the ROYAL PRIESTHOOD a member of God's own people.....how about you?

The movie THE NUN'S STORY was a shot over the bow. Women entered to have that theological union with the Bridegroom, and help the poor. But Scribe and Pharisees human rules got in the way. In many women's communities the mission became a false God. If a woman left because of this, part of the fault is with the community

In asking Bishops to go to Rome before founding new communities is very welcome reform. Also the reforms from JPII to Benedict to Francis are also having an impact, but it will be a decade before you see all this because formation takes time.

Well done Robert, as an ordinary man even before I returned to the faith, I would never discriminate against anybody out of human respect. I have many Gay friends and acquaintance's and some, I'm not sure know themselves. That's fine as it's none of my business. I can wish the the peace of the Lord equally on everyone. God bless you and your viewers.

Hmmmm you caution others not to judge, yet just recently you felt well within your rights to judge that the two American traditional priests should indeed be banned from ministering to their parishioners.
And you felt quite comfortable with all your reasons for your opinion.
Who are you that you felt your opinion important enough to make a podcast about it and broadcast it to the planet?
Perhaps you might consider sitting yourself down and giving yourself a good talking to about how you ought to learn to follow your own advice.

Yes, because they reneged on their promise to their Bishop regarding accepting the new mass. When they were founded they had an agreement. Why create division and antagonism?

And why not invite him, he is a human being. Whilst living in London for 7 months, I rented a room from two gay guys and they were ( and still are) two of my favourite wonderful people.
Not a very Christian attitude to decide to ignore someone all because you disagree with them.

Jesus went to the outcasts, not the well-to-do.
He came for the sick not the healthy.
God put Pope Francis in the magisterium for this time.
Justice without judgment. The message Jesus gives is to love the sinner.
No love in cutting the sh.ite out of people who are trying to help others.
Unity in love. Christianity is meant to be a religion of love and peace, humility and sharing Gods goodness.
The gospel means good news. Do not cut the shite out of people because you've a big ego.
I was an alcoholic a loving catholic helped me and showed me kindness or I'd be dead and forgotten. If you are a traditional catholic truly you would not dare say a bad word about the Pope.
It was on heard off for traditional Catholics to even think bad of the pope.
It's still a mortal sin to say bad of God's chosen successor of saint Peter.

    • @johnf2023

@tonyjsbelfast In fact, it was human beings with free will who chose him to be pope. To say that God put him there is erroneous. A Divine Person chose Peter. Human persons chose Peter's successors. God Bless.

Don’t blame God for who the pope is, or for who the lival bishop is. Fallible cardinals select the pope, and unfortunately( though it shouldn’t be that way) it’s usually the pope who appoints bishops.
