Ivan Dixon was an unsung genius. He gave 100% to everything he did as an actor/director.
Ms. Lincoln was so beautiful. Beautiful singer and actress. Ivan Dixon is a pioneer…a legend❤️
This is one of the best movies I’ve ever seen. I’ve never seen better more realistic acting.
She can wear whatever she wants... Regardless of what she wears she was a very good artist
This is on my personal list of the ten best films of all time. I own a DVD copy of this I purchased years ago. I first saw this film when I was about 10 or 11 years old in '66 or "67. Then , I was trying to process the hatred some Whites held for people who looked like me. I didn't understand it then. I don't now, As a Black man now 67 years old, having experienced what Duff experienced to a lesser degree in my life, this film speaks to me in a different way than when I was a boy. This film has touched me on so many different levels. I never get tired of watching it. The ending always chokes me up a bit as the relationship with my father was similar. to Duff and his father as well as Duff's son to him.
Excellent cast and acting throughout. Abby Lincoln's acting is at once poignant and powerful. I believe this was Julius Harris' acting debut. Other actors such as Yaphet Kotto and Gloria Foster were also just beginning their careers. I can't praise this film enough . Thanks for posting . Get others to watch.
I'm so happy he came back to her Good love❤
Certified CLASSIC!!! Very understated and powerful performances by everyone. One of my favorites!
He gas some good things going oni
I had known that Ivan Dixon was a very important director, and, of course, I knew him from "Hogan's Heroes". This film shows his intensity and honesty as an actor. I wasn't familiar with Abby Lincoln, and her open-hearted portrayal here brought tears to my eyes. After those two, I was most impressed by Gloria Foster--words aren't enough for her work in this movie.
Abbey Lincoln not only a very good actress but a brilliant musician. A shame that she had to wear a wig in this movie since she , in real life, was an early adopter of wearing her hair in a beautiful natural style! May both these actors rest in Glory…
ABBEY LINCOLN, by this, was already a rising major jazz vocal star on Rvsde lbl. Had 4 lps and more comin up. The FREEDOM NOW SUITE w husband Max Roach was a revolutionary work. Redefined the whole concept of jazz vocalism by encapsulating the black frustration into angry bird shrieks. Specialist in melancholy ballads, not a scatter-squatter.. This is a rare gem, has that Cassavetes feel of b&w freshness (2 meanings) throughout, similar to SHADOWS (1959), which has the Mingus soundtrack most significantly. Very much obliged (all meanings). Met her thrice. A warm personality, if you handled her rite - far from a Billie devotee only.
33:35 Funny Gloria Foster plays the Oracle in The Matrix and also tells Keanu Reeves to sit down at the kitchen table
Best movie of the 1960s !!!!
A very realistic and gritty account of black life in the south during the 60s.I love the fact that everyone look do for real and unpolished.
This is a very good movie. I have never heard or seen it before. Great acting, great cast, and great writing. I thoroughly enjoyed it and it quickly became one of my all time favorites. Thank you so much for uploading and sharing it.
Ivan Dixon brilliant in this picture as are all the supporting cast. That he could transition so easily from poignant verisimilitude here to hilarious comedy (Hogan´s Heroes) is amazing. A great American actor.
Beautifully directed by Michael Roemer.
Hogan's Heroes. I recognized that name Ivan Dixon, but just couldn't place from where. Thanks for your comment.
I don't think we appreciated Hogan's Heroes at the time as much as we would now considering all the garbage that's on TV these days.
I’m so excited to see this!! It’s been on my list to see forever.

Man, Duffs dad was a trio… just met his son as a grown man then tells him to BEAT IT 😂

A film can describe a man....any man .
A good film shows him inside and out.
Warts and all!😮
It can show his motives; his way of livin' -- what makes him tick ?
Yet a man is part of a wider community ; a society; a country indeed.
Is he a free man or merely a blinded slave ?
Africa is the birthplace of our humanity in general.
Yet thousands of them went to the USA to essentially become slavery to poverty and injustice. Faith and self belief is what kept them going so strong - faith can move Mountains.
This is a portrait of a man ; he is a portrayal one of made heart ; kindness; respect and honesty.
Not values we notice much at all these days , right?
Its a remarkable document to personal freedom; self -- identity and inner belief .
To be good ; you have to still believe in the fact of our goodness.
B L E A K . . . & "It Ain t Necessarily So", plays throughout in the backgnd, neahh-muted ..strong period feel. What happened to the director, not heard since (?).
48:11 "...You ought to smile more ..." Some things never change. 🤨

YAPHET KOTTO
Gostei desse filme
i want to watch but I cannot...
Few narrative films - then, and now - capture through implication (and our inference) the sheer psychic pressure of living as an African American in a programmatically racist society (ie: segregation was the program which perpetuated AND engendered material and systemic racism (in both north and south...and the West [which few ever mention]), as does this film...a psychic pressure and diversion of personal and community energies to vigilance so intense that it becomes a total consciousness authoring your every breath; you aren't merely 'experiencing' racism as much as it has worked its way into the very fibre of your being.
Actors from Alien, Matrix, Superfly...
È un film molto intenso e poco spettacolare, tanto da permettere di conoscere il razzismo negli Stati Uniti molto più di altri film per chi non è americano. Grazie
فلم رأئع جدا جدا شكرا لك ❤❤👍👍
Movie shows a simulation of the reality of what most blacks faced with racism. Solid film overall, just didn't like the part where the lead character took his frustrations out on his wife physically.

Alhamdulillah!!🤲🏾❤
He was good in car wash
Was Stevie Wonder EVER little? ;)
How did he get out of Stalag 13?
Through the tunnel! How else?
I was 6 years old when this movie came out, I never knew my biological father, and this movie illustrates what it was like during the Civil Rights movement, and what it was like for proud Black men, to not compromise or be passive to racist Caucasians! Ivan Dixon reminded me of my Westchester Co. NY, dept of Social Services case worker, Mr O. Rappaley!
