They did a split screen comparison between a shanty town road somewhere in Africa and a street in Oakland. My jaw was on the floor - they looked identical. All those people living in struggle - I wish I could wave a magic wand and cure the situation but what I saw looks like a nearly insurmountable situation. It would take YEARS to build them all cheap housing. That would need massive amounts of land and money. Ugh, the whole thing saddened me because I used to stay with friends in the Bay Area for months at a time 30 years ago and it was my favorite place in North America. Now I don't linger in town too long when en route to visit my brother in Napa. All this said there's still a pretty big twinge of jealousy when you say you're in the Bay Area. You ARE lucky. I visited NY last year and I was surprised to see so many gorgeous and well dressed people walking down the streets. It was like a big fashion show and I am from Newport Beach California.
