- Commercial Salmon Troller Fishing Basics
Captain Cody shows several commercial salmon fishing boats. Salmon trollers are used to catch salmon commercially. The basics of downriggers is shown. A salmon gill net boat is also shown.
Hopefully, this gives you an idea of the basic boats used to catch salmon. There are also seine net boats used to catch salmon. Mostly pink and chum salmon though.
Thank for watching,
Captain Cody
That was bloody interesting. Thank you for posting it. Commercial Trollers keep their trade secrets very close to their chests. There is almost nothing of commercial trolling on youtube.
Sure thing, there are some videos of them pulling in fish but they do not really explain what they are doing. Thanks for watching!
Sometimes commercial fishing is like being at war, The 1986 Addams River Sockeye run saw thousands of troll vessels 50 miles off Northern Vancouver Island.
all boats had a 5-mile-wide school that made tact congested only the largest boats would vie for the best bight. There were some collisions among the most aggressive. Let me say that being on a commercial fishing vessel in a collision can be a dangerous place steel rigging tends to snap aluminum poles when they collide as stay cables zing above my head a few inches lower and I most certainly would be dead. 50 years I spent on and off the sea, I am still here by all odds the ocean never got the best of me. I would love to go back to capture it on film as a history of the West Coast fishing memories and dedicate it to all who were lost in the pursuit of the Pacific Gold.
Some good info but the big triangle thing is called a stabilizer and isn't used for fishing that only attaches to our poles that go off the boat to give usore stability and to keep the poles tight while we have our wires and leads in the water!
Thanks, yeah I did not realize you guys used stabilizers. I just thought it was part of the planer system but I was wrong. Thanks for the comment and for watching!
Great video Captain Cody! I see a lot of trollers as I walk the docks but now have a WAY better understanding of how they make the magic happen! Tight lines! Captain Zac
Thanks for watching! I did call the boats stabilizers, planers but other than that it is accurate.
Awesome Captain Copdy, this is Captain Buzz, 50 years in and out of Commercial fishing all over the West Coast from AB line to AB line West Coast QCI Renal Sound area. Winter Harbour 1986 Addams River Sockey run in the Picies Canon.
That is pretty cool Captains Buzz! It is defiantly an interesting line of work.
My father's first boat was 32 feet called JEHU III with a commercial license in those days it was a transmission with chain and sprocket.
Nothing other than a compass there were a few times I think we were lost in the fog. We would stay offshore and hope the fog lifts.

The 'planer' is a stabilizer, which hangs off your poles to stabilize the boat. To spread your lines you use styrofoam 'pigs'.
Copy that! I was incorrect with what I said. Thanks for watching!
I lost my 'pigs' on Top Not pinnacle on my first run the good thing is thanks to Loran C the location record put me right on the gear. What a way to begin my fishing career.
You only have to do that shit once. Learning the hard way is often the good way. GPS, chart plotters and really good sounders make it a lot easier than it was. Cheers. :) @@TheBuzz222
Captain Buzz, I have some harrowing tales from my years on the water as I am sure you have some too. I want to put together a podcast of fishing stories for the public to listen to from those who know it best.
If you would like to submit a story or two my podcast would love to hear them.
Let's keep in communication ...Over@@allancrow134
Interesting setups. Worldwide salmon fishing is super different
Yeah, commercial salmon trollers are pretty neat!
the planer or hydrofoil are called stabilizers, there is one on each side of the boat. They stabs are attached half way up the trolling pole. The downriggers are called Gurdies....the wire line can be one, one and half to two fathom apart. for Sockeye fishing, you want them to be one fathom apart and the leader would be 1 fathom from the clip to the flasher. you would set up leaders differently for the different species you are fishing for.
Yeah, you are correct, I called the stabilizers planers by mistake.
That “planer” is used to stabilize the boat.
Yeah I did call a stabilizer a planer by mistake. Thanks for watching Matt!
the lines are spread by the poles going down and the lines from the gurdies are drawn out. the stablizers just stabilize
Copy that, I did call them planers by mistake, thanks for watching!
That sir is a stabilizer to keep your boat stable. And that big weight ball shape in the back deck is called a cannon ball.
Yeah, did call the stabilizer a planer by mistake. Thanks for watching!
Wow 10,000 pounds a week? I need to go fishing there. Here in S.E. AK we are only getting 20,000 pounds to 40,000 pounds for a 3 month season.
That is what I was told. It depends on the fishing obviously and what types are open. But in Sitka, July through August, the fishing is pretty consistent for silvers. Kings are typically only open a few days out in the good spots. There are always lots of lots of commercial boats out there trolling away. I was just running charters so do not really know the numbers for commercial guys though.
Great video Capt, new sub here thanks for all the great info! I've been to the Scotty factory on Vancouver Island and their factory is no frills straight to the point just like all of their awesome products! That hand troller 😬 I get arm pump from operating my manual Scotty, I have since upgraded to an electric Scotty!
Ha ha nice, yeah manuals are good if you go a few times a year! Thanks for watching!
1:28 there stabilizers so the boat doesn’t rock back and forth /side to side
Yeah, good call I did call the stabilizer a planer by mistake. Thanks for watching.
That was a stabilizer that hangs from the trolling pole to slow the roll of the boat, has nothing to do with troll gear.
Yeah you are correct.
That makes sense. I thought it was used like planner boards so you could run two or three downriggers on each side. I guess you guys have separate planers for that? I never worked on a troller boat before.
Not sure why but youtube says I have not responded.
cores you are in Alaska so that explains a lot and its troller not trawler
I did say hand trawler permit. My Bad.
@@CaptainCody7 trawlers drag a big net on the bottom behind them trollers drag wire with speeds for salmon and jigs for tuna it's a huge insult if you call a salmon troller a trawler
Spreads not speeds sorry
@@CaptainCody7 I'm not trying to be an ass or anything just take it for granted that everyone should know what I do keep forgetting I've been doing this for almost 20years I'm going to start posting videos of various fish stiles and techniques
@@wilsonthompson8749 Cool, I subscribed. I hope it goes well for you!
Nice video cap!
Thanks for watching!
I tell you the truth when I look back on it all, I wonder in amazement as to how I have survived. Commercial fishing has always been an adventure and pursuit in which many have lost their lives. I would like to dedicate my story to those who came before me because without them I would not be here now.
Yeah this is true. Commercial fishing is quite the adventure!
I would love to interview you for my book
My documentary podcast and film. Stay tuned for upcoming reports.
Thank you, Captain Cody.
Yours truly

@@TheBuzz222 Sure, let me know what you need from me. My email is in the channel info page.
I will Captain, your input is valuable information and worth preserving for the historic value it contains.@@CaptainCody7
Shear boards ,gurdies, stabilizers (stabbies)
Copy, yeah I called it a planer cause I was wrong.
Boat I worked on in British Columbia held 25k fresh 15k frozen, The spools are called Gerties those are stabilizers, planners are usually just pieces of Styrofoam to separate or spread out the gear! Good video though! Is this in the states?
Thanks for the info and thanks for watching. Yeah, this is in Sitka Alaska.
Who in the hell run a hook every 6 feet, tangle fucking city, be ok on 3 foot leaders.
The spacing can be fathom or fathom and a half. The commercial leaders are about 6 feet in length I am pretty sure. The commercial clips connected directly to the downrigger cable so it is not like stacking with rod and reel when recreational fishing where the mainline can get tangled when the line releases from the clip.
Dear Captain Cody, I am a student film maker from Dublin Ireland and I'm making a documentary about a relative of mine who worked on a Troller boat. How can I get permission to use some of your fantastic footage in my project? George Sharpson.
That is cool you can use it. If you need any raw footage email me at globalfishingreports at gmail dot com. Thanks for watching!
@@CaptainCody7 Thank You Captain, I will mention you in the documentary credits.
Great Job !
Thanks!
Those are gurdies, not downriggers.
And I think you know about the stabilizers by now!
Cool video though!
I did not know the reels were called gurdies. Yeah, I know about the stabilizers. I thought they were used with the float bags at the time.
Hey captain Cody! My names Gary! Do you need help fishing? Just wondering because I love to fish is all.
Thanks for the offer but I am not running fishing charters at the moment.
What do you use to check the water visibility before going out to fish?
I check the weather but not the water visibility.
Hey !👌👌👌
Hi, Thanks for watching!
Hey what happened to him??
To who?
@@CaptainCody7 to you!!!!
oh my you know nothing about salmon trolling you dont even know what the name of everything
Yeah, I admit I do not know much about commercial boats since I run sportfishing charters. That is why this says basics. Commercial guys rarely make videos that explain what they do.
@@CaptainCody7 ya I know I'm planning on making a bunch of informational videos and also do some videos explaining the difference between Oregon and Alaska crabbing and salmon trolling I've been wanting to do it for a while but I still need a better editing system I just theough one pretty much in edited video up but there will be lots more coming soon
Side planers are not needed, those blue things the trolling cable runs through pull the cables out to their position. Those planers are actually called Fish.
Copy that, thanks for the reply!
