I used to be a limo driver in Austin, and I'd often take people on wine tours in driftwood. They would always go to Saltlick and Saltlick was nice enough to give out free drivers meals. I could get anything on the menu, so I got the $30 plate with every meat on it. Always delicious. My favorite bbq sausage and smoked Turkey in Austin

That part of Austin used to be the murder and drug area of town. Now, especially since Franklin opened about 8 years ago, it has quickly gentrified. Salt Lick is the place to take the tourists for a “Texas Hill Country” experience. If you want good bbq and some old school bbq pits, go to Lockhart, TX 30 minutes out of Austin. Quicker lines and great brisket and a small town, Texas experience. Franklin still has the best brisket around.

If you want excellent barbecue without the long wait in Austin, I'd recommend La Barbecue which is around the same part of town. I've gone to salt lick probably 3 times in my life, which is odd since I live about 10 miles out. To me, salt lick is a tourist attraction that's it. To a Texan, their barbeque is almost like fast food but the place it self is pretty cool.
As someone who's had the brisket point from Franklin's BBQ I can attest, it is the best brisket I've ever tasted in my life. Melts in your mouth literally. You have to work against yourself to fully savor it, otherwise it's gone and you've swallowed the bite of brisket. If you don't care whether you have beef ribs, the best time to come is lunch time on Wednesdays or Thursday. The line isn't bad because it's the middle of the week. I've done that a few times and only waited 20 minutes before I got to the counter. 100% recommend.
