- Anbenum Peruveli (The grand expanse called love) is a musical project that artistically interprets and reimagines the poetry of the 19th Century Tamil saint Ramalinga Adigal, popularly known as Vallalar by singer Sanjay Subrahmanyan in collaboration with the music composer Sean Roldan.
Sanjay Subrahmanyan’s rigorous attempt has been in shifting his orientation towards adapting newer modes of musical production, in this process his work with Sean Roldan has been to deep dive into envisaging a digital experience. This challenge has pushed his artistic endurability, equipped with the faculties of perseverance.
Rafiq Ismail, the filmmaker of the Anbenum Peruveli documentary film, has captured the coming together of this music album. Rafiq has also brought alive the essence of Vallalar by collating the interviews of writers, researchers and scholars working within the Tamil socio-political terrain. This film unfolds as a profound layer to Anbenum Peruveli’s endeavour. Karthik Muthukumar is the cinematographer for the Anbenum Peruveli documentary.

வள்ளலார் தமது அருட்பாக்களில் 'களிப்பு' என்ற சொல்லை ஆன்மீக உச்சநிலையைக் குறிக்கப் பயன்படுத்துகிறார். அவரது ஞானப் பாதையில் களிப்பு ஒரு மையக் கருத்தாக திகழ்கிறது.
அருட்பெருஞ்ஜோதி அகவலில் காணப்படும் "ஆனந்தக் களிப்பே பேரின்பமே" போன்ற வரிகள் களிப்பின் மேன்மையை பறைசாற்றுகின்றன.
அனுபவத்தால் விளையும் ஞானமே உண்மையான களிப்பை, ஒரு நிலையான ஆனந்த நிலையை வழங்கும் என்பது வள்ளலாரின் கொள்கை.
Accidently happened to see in fb & then listened completely on TV by casting. Such a fantastic project by Sanjay & his team. Great effort over 11 months to bring our the songs is Vallalar. Could understand the pain all of you might've gone thru to design this song after song. Each one of them is unique.v Hats off to all.

Fantastic work! I learned a lot through the diverse interviews and perspectives, which brought me closer to Vallalar’s life and his contributions. The behind-the-scenes glimpses of the musicians, music director, and the singer during rehearsals and recordings added an extra layer of enjoyment. It felt like being immersed in the album creation process, akin to witnessing Prana Prathishta happen! On another note, the experience was as delightful as attending an MTV Unplugged concert. My heartfelt thanks to everyone involved in bringing this documentary to life. Congratulations!

I know Sean tries to reason it by saying the rock genre is apt because Vallalar seems like an opinionated person but let's face it, setting his words to Rock/western beats is a bit cliched thing to do to bring it to a "modern" listener. Nevertheless, I enjoyed the compositions and will surely listen again!
Also love how they make it all seem apolitical when it's clearly not. One just has to note the guests they've invited to speak on the saint. But as Seinfeld would say - not that I have a problem with it! 😉
