  • This teaching is about Israel crossing the Jordan river and setting up twelve memorial stones as recorded in Joshua 3-4. This event marks the first manifestation of God's presence with Israel's new leader, Joshua, who had been appointed to assume leadership of Israel after the death of Moses.
I've got a free training for you that will help you take your Bible study to the next level. The training is called, "Kick Start Your Own Bible Study Library." To get it visit www.thechristianbrocode.com
Israel crossing the Jordan was the first step for them to take possession of the promised land. It is fitting, then, the Lord manifested his miraculous power in order for Israel to cross the Jordan. To mark this important event, the Lord instructed Joshua to set up twelve stones. These twelve stones would serve as a reminder to future generations of Israelites of the miraculous manner in which Israel crossed the Jordan.
The twelve stones themselves were important. The fact that these twelve stones were taken from the middle of the Jordan gives them an added significance. In this teaching I explain what that added significance is. I also explain how you and I can apply the principles of this passage to our lives today.
Question: Do you have "memorial stones" that serve as reminders of how God has manifested his power in your life? Let us know in the comments!

I have a ladder I call my ladder from heaven. This ladder is over 30 years old. When I was a young mother I chose to stay home with my children and home school them so we lived on one income. Things were tight financially but God always took care of our needs. Our ceiling in our living room was high and the air vents were on the ceiling in our Florida home. I had just made breakfast for my husband and packed his lunch, He traveled about 30 minutes to work each day. After he left I sat in my chair to pray before the children woke up. When I looked at the ceiling I noticed the vents had blew dust on the ceiling. We had no ladder to clean the ceiling nor money to buy a ladder. I said to the Lord during my prayer time that I sure wished I had a ladder to clean my ceiling. Well about 15 minutes later my husband knocked on the door and said to open the garage. I wondered why he came back home cuz he should be at work. He had a ladder in his hands. I asked him where did that come from???? He said it was it was in the middle of road and he almost hit it. He said I waited to see if anyone came back for it but there was not many cars on the road that early. I told him I was just praying for a ladder and the Lord must have dropped it out of heaven for me. I still have that ladder and use it today.

I have my first Bible which I received when I was about 12 1/2 years old. (I am now 52). I love to look through it and remember the day my mother gave it to me. She didn’t have a lot of money as she was a single parent of 3. My older brother was 15 and my younger brother was 3 at the time so buying us each a Bible was a very expensive yet priceless gift. My Bible was slightly cheaper bc it had a small hole in the front cover. At first, I always felt like I had to explain to people that it was damaged in the shipping process because I was afraid that people would think I was careless with my precious Bible. Over the years of usage, the corner has become so worn that the hole no longer exists. I sometimes look at it and think about all the things that I was so ashamed of people seeing that no longer appears to exist but I know that God knows that the damage was there and He loves me as if I was never damaged. I don’t know if I wrote that as clearly as I feel it but I ponder on that from time to time. Then I enjoy looking through that old Bible at the things I wrote in it; mostly poems but also little gems that I heard in church and didn’t want to ever forget. In addition, I love looking at the little pictures that my brother drew during church and presented them for me afterwards. One is a picture that looks like a whale with a nose, lol, and I wrote on the back of it the date. It’s amazing to look at the beautiful memories of when I was first learning about God, Jesus the prophets and so many others that are recorded in the Bible. Through all of life’s ups and downs, I have had that Bible to remember how God saw me through everything and I don’t need to fear anything that was, is or will happen.

Neeka Rein I never see scars in this manner. How interesting. I have a huge scar on me now and I kept asking God to take it away because I dislike it. But I now understand your point. The scar is a memorial of how God has saved me. Though I wish I didn’t have to have this scar it was my own disobedience never God’S problem. The scar reminds me to stay humble before Him all the days of my life.

Memorial stones...I'm writing stories for my children and grandchildren to keep. One time, my kids and I were on a long road trip in our new van. A car ahead in the lane next to us hit a long board in the middle of the road. The board rose up and was coming directly toward our windshield on the passenger side where my daughter was sitting. I was amazed when it was suddenly deflected and missed the window completely. At our next stop we noticed that the radio antenna had been completely bent. I straightened out the antenna with pliers but decided to keep it slightly bent as a reminder of how God saved us from tragedy. We saw that bent antenna every day for 10 years and talked about it numerous times with family and friends.

This was a very beautiful teaching . I have preached about this story because I love it so much . One of the things that was reveled to me was ,that when the children would ask they could tell them that after crossing the Jordan there mind set was transformed. Before crossing they would gossip and sin . Also before crossing the Jordan they spend 40years walking ,and going around in circles with out getting to the promise land ,but after crossing and setting up the memorial stones their children would not be stuck any more , of have a poor mind set ,so I agree that is a very good conversation topic ,and perfect timing to tell their kids ,those stones represent that God was and will always be with us .

In our family, there are no temporal items for remembering God's faithfulness. Back in the time of Joshua, the Israelites did not yet have the understanding that we do in these last days. God had not yet been manifest in the flesh. The spotless sacrifice of our Lord Jesus Christ changed everything. The ministration of death through the old covenant became the ministration of the spirit through the new! (2Cor3:7-9) We now have the Spirit of truth, guiding us into ALL truth, living inside of us. (Jn 16:13)
As a little family, we endured many, many sufferings together (and still do, though the children are all grown and independent). We did suffer financial hardship. But all things are relative, and in our case it paled in comparison to the other sufferings we experienced, and continue to. We know them...and God knows them. He is sustaining us through it ALL. We are witnesses to his love, provision, righteousness and comfort.
What we DID learn, and continue to acknowledge and celebrate, is this: Though he were a Son, yet learned he obedience by the things that he suffered (Heb.5:8). If he suffered, we will suffer; we are following him. We are his body. He promises that if we suffer, we shall also reign with him: if we deny him, he also will deny us: If we believe not, yet he abideth faithful: he cannot deny himself. (2Tim. 2:12-13).
This understanding wasn't imparted by mortal man from any "church". It was imparted by the Spirit of the living God THROUGH the suffering, and in his Word. It's the only way we learn obedience to God, and not man, or our own carnal desires. What could be better than that! It enables us to remain thankful in and for ALL things. To God be the glory.
Thank you, The Christian Bro Code, for giving us a place to celebrate the marvelous wonders and mighty acts that our God has done through his Son, Jesus Christ!

I’m in awe of GOD.... He’s THE COVENANT KEEPING GOD! The testimonies I’m reading here is so faith-lifting. Sometimes around year 2006; I had an encounter with kidnapper/ritualist. I’m a Nigerian, a born and bred Synagogue (SCOAN) member, as at that year I was a Nursing student, now, I’m practicing. It happened that I had reference in my core course, I was usually verbally bullied in my school by some lecturers, so I decided to visit the prayer mountain to cry out all my heart GOD. On my way going, I boarded a commercial bus hoping to take me to my destination, while taking my seat beside the drivers’, unfortunately it branched off the right route. I asked why going through the right route! Next was a hoax voice shunning me down to keep quiet, cooperate with them and say my last prayers. Turning to see where the voice is coming from, behind me were 4 hefty men, a guy beside me and a driver, making a titan of 6 men. Hmmm, I asked what was happening, the next I git was a slap on my face, yelling and shunning, while the driver drove on . Immediately, something told me, this is how people leave their house and don’t return. All of a sudden, I started sweating profusely, with teary heart. I kept my calm, started praising GOD in my heart, mixture of prayer, recounting GOD’S promises etc. I was totally dumbfounded and partially scared, with the “small faith/confidence” that there’s nothing no human can do, vis my life is hidden and kept secure in GOD’S hollow Arm. Long-story short was that, as they drive through secluded, untarred and quiet street. They stopped to by roadside alcoholic gin/drink, next, one of the men at the back seat meant for passengers alighted, second one came down and two of them started fighting, serious one at that, the third one who wanted to separate the fight joined in the fight while smashing the bottles, the fourth one accused me of bewitching them after slapping me, he got down and joined in the fight which turned bloody, followed by the driver bad the man guiding me by the right side. The fight became tough, serious and bloody, as soon as the left and right doors were wide opened, the lady selling the “paraga” saw them in bloody fight, she was initially worried and placed her two hands on her head, when she saw the fight, she signalled me to gently alight and run away. So, I gently picked my slippers, hugged my Bible to my chest and ran as fast as my legs could carry me, as soon as I got to the end of the street, it dawned on them, they stopped fighting and pointed... I lived with the fear for months before I spoke up to my mum, who cried and thanked GOD. Till date, I still remember the route they diverted into. This built my faith and trust in GOD even when I’m in trouble.
    Sorry for the long post.

Do you think that the water was stopped at Adam or that it stopped at the location of the Priest carrying the Ark of The Covenant and piled up back to Adam? Just a thought...

  • @tweety5554

Question: While the priest were standing in the middle of the Jordan, holding the Ark, how close did the 12 men come to them to pick up the stones? I'm asking because the people were warned not to get to close to the Ark in chapter 3:4.

tweety5554 - Nice question. It got me thinking and turn to the Bible to look for answers. I dont know if I am right but seems to me that priests had left leaving a lamp-post or mark where to pick the stone from! The waters had already stopped leaving the ground dry and appears to me that Ark was no longer there when tribes were asked to pick the stones. ???

Shalom Dr Mario Escobedo of The Christian CBC Brother Code. I find your "You can use memorial stones" to talk to your family about what GOD has done in your life" similar or analogy to the practice in Catholicism. As a matter of fact, the Catholics are exactly doing the "memorial stones" like a "window or gateway" with conversations, with prayers, with veneration to GOD as a virtue reminder of what the Almighty GOD had demonstrated His Divine Powers and Love for His people. GOD commanded Moses to build a serpent on a staff so Israelites can repent their sins upon looking at the serpent (serve as a reminder of their sinfulness or a memorial stones) and to Solomon build a temple fill with certain kinds of creatures and earthly decors (serve as a reminder of God's covenant or the memorial stones), likewise Catholics with altar at home (serve as a reminder of God's covenant with Abraham building an altar of sacrifice or the memorial stones) & many more in the Scriptures. Understand this, these holy objects or images CANNOT be worshiped for they're just a vessel only (window or gateway), nothing more nothing less. As you've explained, GOD Unconditional Love for us and remains faithful to us till end of times. Hence, these holy objects and images are used as models of GOD's faithfulness and keep us steadfast with GOD. However, if you disagree, that means GOD Himself has violated His own Ten commandments in the first order.
Actually St Paul has answered for us: “Whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is adorable, whatever is gracious; if there’s anything worthy of praise or excellence in it, do think about these things...” quoted by disciple Paul. (Philippians 4:8)

Its sais the stones where placed in the mids of the river, meaning the middle , not the river bank

The stones in the river is the first memorial. The stones at nearby Gilgal was the second memorial. The stones at Gilgal were whitewashed.

No actually the bible says, the promised land is on "the eastern side of jordan river" not "the Israelites are on the east side of jordan"! See we have a problem?

Not to be negative or a "killjoy", this teaching is very good...but...are there items in your household that are a memorial to your sinfulness? Let me explain, yes, we have items that remind us of our poverty early on and how God has provided. But, much to my shame there are also items that remind me of my sinfulness...like that pen I took from work that wasn't mine to take. Hmmm. Now I could remove them to its rightful owner and ease my conscience...but the deed was done...as a professed servant of the Lord. How many of us would be that honest with ourselves or would we throw a "grace blanket" over our day to day struggle with the world, flesh and devil? There is a tendency in the human heart to only view the good things, the bright side, the pleasant things and a reluctance to stare truth in the eye. Its the awareness of my inability to overcome my sinful nature without God that keeps my Love for Him more alive and real.

That would bring guilt to many people who were joyed by the teaching of Pastor Mario Escobedo!! Thanks for saying that - ease my conscience, grace blanket...wow!

The people came down the wilderness and crossed way south of where you are showing. The burnt mountain top of Mt Sinai is in Saudi Arabia as is the Rock of Horeb where the water came out, as is the altar for the Golden Calf. The Saudisknow this and have barbed wire around it, wont let anyone near it. The cave of Elijah is there too as are the remains of 2 pillars placed by King Solomon, either side of the Red Sea crossing where they actually crossed . Your map isn't correct.
