    I nearly found out the hard way that Canon's old black cylindrical lens cases for the magic drainpipe (80-200) and its smaller sibling (28-80) CANNOT BE TRUSTED. They look solid, as if made out of thick leather, whereas in fact it's just something stuck onto cardboard (yes, really), and a similar circular piece glued round the edge as the base. The whole thing can fall apart, as I found out as a lens nearly fell to the ground. My advice is to go for Lowepro lens cases or, for the 80-200, the modern off-white lens cases that Canon do.

    Hey Aaron! An excellent video for your first video! I just have a couple pointers. I would recommend you have more B-Roll in the form of the photos when you're talking about certain aspects of the lens, not that seeing you speak for 8 minutes straight isn't interesting, it just makes the video exciting and entertaining to watch for awhile. Also, look for redundancy with what you say in the edit, try to get the video in between 10-15 minutes for this type of stuff. Additionally, try to have a less flat background with some backlight, maybe add some color if you can (office depo lights, flashlights, LEDs, etc. and binder dividers as gels work great), maybe put some of your old film cameras in the background on a shelf or something bokeh'd out. Also, something you can do right now with this video, use all 500 characters of the tags, the more relevant tags you have, the higher chances new people will find your video and your work. Lastly, I thought your audio sounded better than I expected what did you use for that?

    I just bought the 28-70 2.8. I paid $500 so I hope it’s decent. I had the 24-105 but unfortunately it was DOA. I was so sad and wasn’t able to find another at the same price . Got a wedding coming up and knew the 2.8 was more ideal so decided on this.

    The right lens hood is the EW-79, not the ES-79.

    Thank you for all this information! Very helpful. 😊 you answered exactly the questions that I had about it. The crazy thing is I was contemplating between this lens and the 24-105 just as you stated in the video. It’s like you read my mind! lol 😂
    thanks again.
    PS: I recently bought this lens on eBay and was considering returning it due to its heaviness. That’s my only real issue with it.

      Same here :-D The 20-35 really positively surprised me. Going to use the other two lenses more in the future. Another overperformer in my opinion is the 100-300 5.6 L.

    How is this lens for wide field astrophotography? (For things like star trails, or capturing the Milky Way).
    How is its aperture value? Does it perform well in low light?

    Thanks for the excellent review! I owned this gem for a while, and the picture was amazing, that is true. The only problem is age. My lens was great and crispy sharp at all focus distances from 0,5 to 50m, but there was no autofocus on infinity from about 40mm to 80mm range, and the picture itself was blurry on the background. I guess the bushings inside the lens are worn out. So I changed it for 24-105 F4L which is amazing too but more ordinary in terms of picture style. The picture from old 28-80 looks really cinematographic, it is pretty cool, so I still hope to find another one someday.
    But my advice is to check thoroughly before purchase. The lens is about 30 years old, it is very complicated inside, mechanically and electronically, so unfortunately the age matters.

      I always try to emphasize buying any used lens or camera body in absolutely mint condition when one is looking. That way you get the best chance at a good one possible. My original 5D failed on me after only about 1.5 years of professional work. Likely due to it already being heavily used when purchased. But it’s also all about luck!

    Hi Aaron! I bought it thanks your review ;-) Do you have any suggestion for Lightroom lens profile correction since this lens is not longer supported ?

    • @ForeverYoungAaron
      @ForeverYoungAaron  3 года назад +1

      I haven’t messed with profiles on this lens but I do believe I recall finding some manual entries on google from other users. I typically let my lenses characteristics stay in unless I need a perfect image for commercial work. In my opinion, a lenses flaws can add something to creative photography! (Always correct distortion on models though haha)

    You didn’t mention the fact that the front element rotates as you focus. I use Polarizing filters and that is a big NO GO for me.

    You are correct, this is a very underrated lens. It is the smaller sibling of the magic drainpipe, so the mini-magic drainpipe. It is one of my favourite lenses for my 5Diii. I think it compares very well with modern high-end Canon and even Zeiss lenses, it's that good. In the UK I've seen them sell for just £200 or even less, but I think they're worth double that. I'm no expert but as I understand it, back then, Canon could still use lead in the glass, which contributes to the high IQ.

    Dont use it in live view the focus motor may give out on you. Thats what happen to my copy. Canon no longer services it and there is no place to get parts.

    • @ForeverYoungAaron

      Did your camera have Dual Pixel autofocus or the old style? Also was the lens in continuous autofocus mode or just when you half pressed? I used mine on a mirrorless with dual pixel af for photos and never had issues. But didn’t use continuous af. So just curious what the circumstances were for failure

    • @Tech-NO-City
      @Tech-NO-City 3 года назад

      @@ForeverYoungAaron I was using it on a 7D I love that camera. This old lens was designed for the eos film days. The 28-80mm L was made from 93-02. Maybe it was just time for the lens to go I got it for $100 with fungus damage I cleaned the rear element(seller said he only used it 4times) and a week later wile on live view AF it started grinding, then no sound from AF motor. The form boards are full of people having the same issues. I figured out a way to use the focus manual even tho its drive by wire only. With all that said it still takes great pictures.
