The issue Chris is talking about is quite related with the Golden Circle by Simon Sinek, the way that leaders communicate is through the purpose (first the why not the what)...

It really seems you have to value what you have to offer, value the client's goal and vision and value your time and the client's time to reach a solution. This was very insightful.

What makes an expert an expert though? Is it years of experience in a field or a portfolio of projects?

    Hey Chris!
these higher level questions also reflect how much you love your services you offer and verifies the curiosity the client had to see if you are what they are looking for.

To know thyself is often the most difficult task! I find that as I get older and I start exploring different interests, I am constantly learning about different subjects and interests which is normal for people.

I work with a bunch of enterprise clients on custom software dev/consulting. 80%+ of the time they don't want to pay for discovery and want to jump straight into building a product. This always backfires and leads to a bunch of rework. How do I get clients to pay for the discovery phase in such a competitive environment?

Maybe target it in this angle. Through your past experience with clients, jumping straight into something instead of taking the time to thuroughly evaluate this project makes for mistakes, thus expensing more of my time and more of your money. I'm a video editor and a videographer, so what I tell a lot of my clients, is that everything can be solved during pre-production. By the time we "fix it in post, it's already too late. I'm not a magician.

@@mr.person1219 I completely agree. Your story is the equivalent in my world to a client saying, "It would be great if we could add an [insert a feature that requires changes at the infrastructure level] into the app before we launch. It's like, yes that would be great, but it's something that we should have scoped into the project at the discovery phase and now it will cost you 1.5x more + time to implement. That said, at the time of signing the initial SoW they always balk at the discovery phase.
