Brian, thanks for another great lesson. This lesson and "Fills Between Chords" are two of the best lessons I've seen anywhere. Most online lessons just show "how"... you take the time to show "why"... this lesson really brings together some practical applications of theory for me. I am amazed at the time and thought you put into a lesson like this... pure gold. I just read thru some of the comments below, mostly nice, but some of the negative comments must make you a bit crazy. My mentor once told me, "Ignore the mosquitoes"... your responses show you are a class act. Stay strong.
Just a short note to tell you what a fine teacher you are, and artist. Some of the whiners are, as the kookified say, comfortably numb. I also wanted to complement you on the guitar and tone you have developed. 45 very odd years ago I had a Martin 00-18 built in the 30's. Traded up for a D28-12 and after putting it down for 35 years picked it up again. Thanks for the vibe.
Great lessons Thanks -One recommendation is to use a guitar with fret markers for 3 , 5, 7 , 9 etc. Makes it easier for us students to get to the correct fret quickly
Thanks man love these kind of lessons, i will defo sign up to your site when im not so skint. Lots of ideas for when im trying to play lead with a backing track too, i was just stuck at the root fret but now i have a few trick up my sleeve. Anything similar in other keys would be very welcome. Thanks again.
Step 1, learn how to play licks in between the chords of a key. Step 2, learn every lick you can find. Step 3, learn how to put different licks together into nice songs Step 4: learn how to transpose any lick into any key Step 5: PROFIT
I think you are one of the best guitar players that I see on youtube. your mic. picks up your guitar sound just perfect. the best sounding system ive heard on youtube. I just wish your guitar had Dots on them to make it easy to follow along with you lol.
I agree with you that Alvarez offers the best bang for your buck in most cases. Take my challenge; go to your local guitar store, play an Alvarez and then do an apple to apples comparison (dreads vs dreads etc) with guitars that cost three to five times as much. Do the more expensive guitars sound better? Well, yes. More often than not they do. But not by the margin the price would indicate.
Did you buy it from a dealer on EBAY, or direct from Alvarez, store? I have been looking at Alvarez guitar and I think they are a good value, well made and sound really good. Thanks for the lesson.
I like your overarching idea that guitar playing is oriented to making music together. Something I think is true with vocals as well; what I hope for in the prayer groups I am in too.
Your variations to me sounded a bit like Carol King (It's Too Late) and Paul Kossoff from Free - (the hammer on on 5th and 7th fret). And I'm not sneering. Just the process of putting the 2 things together is creating something different from the originals which is what I think you're saying.
I read a lot of these comments. Brian is one of the best teachers out there. You have to use his concepts to create your own ideas. But remember, you cannot ever play well unless you make faces when you play. Just look at BB King and Joe Walsh!
+J Booth As I mention in the video at the beginning - this video is only the first half. If you'd like to watch the 2nd half, you can do so here: www.activemelody.com/lesson/how-to-jam-with-yourself-on-guitar-ep045/ - you just need to be logged in as a premium member.
+sk8r00 Yes, the first half is free, but as a Premium Member you gain access to ALL lessons and courses, all MP3 jam tracks, tablature, etc. New lessons go up every Friday.
learn the scales and you will be able to make your own licks like magic. That's why he says don't memorize and play exactly what he does, if you do this it won't have feeling and your own character.
"Learn How To Jam With Yourself on Acoustic Guitar" Spends 15 minutes teaching us to play a couple licks in one key. Nice. Was hoping for some more broad advice.
you said, don't memorize things, just play. I cannot play without memorizing what you show. so the point you stated was very good, but is it really exists?
No, I don't agree with that. You first learn the rules to create meaning. Im a drummer an I started to play guitar 2 years ago and I still don't know how to feel freedom on the fretboard. The rules are very weird and is tremendously difficult to get a melody out of the guitar and even when I can sing the melody. I feel there's something wrong with the instrument or with the way everyone tries to teach.
You seen like a good player....very nice little jam.....however you talk more then you play....i recommend trying to balance explaining thing and playing better....
This is not teaching you how to jam with yourself it is teaching you a couple techniques and 2 chords that go well together if it was a lesson on how to jam it would go into scales and music theory in general….
Jordan, I have nothing against learning theory, scales etc. But at the end of the day can you make any music with your knowledge. If you can't you need to rethink your approach. On the other hand this lesson shows you how to make music. I have some friends that couldn't tell you the first thing about what scale they are using, but damn if they can't light it up on the fretboard.
MetusBatman V4 I highly doubt they are morons. :) Just saying it isn't necessary for some folks to be able to play music. It would be like walking up to Quentin Tarantino or Terry Gilliam and telling them they are morons because they didn't attend film school. Everyone learns in different ways. It is all in how you use it, if you find it helpful with your playing then go for it and study your ass off. Then do something amazing with it. Good luck!
Lynna Sims I hear you - but unfortunately this was recorded over a year ago and there's not much I can do about it. I do listen to feedback and I've made major improvements to the cadence of the lessons.
--cLAsic-- So true. We live in an instant gratification society. I get roasted from people for taking too much time on some of these lessons. However, if I just quickly blow through something, others will be upset that I'm moving too fast. You're damned if you do and damned if you don't.
Active Melody I'm with the guy above. I like the explanation of why and hows things work and your thought process. It gives guys like me (playing for approx 18 months) food for thought!
Active Melody I say just do things the way you do them... that’s what brought those to your site that enjoy your style... let those with complaints find another source that fits them... I love the lessons you have... been following them for two years now..... keep on.....
Active Melody 4 years old.... no thats the standard of your playing. No wonder u r on the net cause no band could put up with you, you are THE most boring teacher ever.

Just needed to tell you Brian, I look for a lot of guitar tutorials on you tube but I always, always, always come back to activemelody.
Ow that's cool , I appreciated it. Thank you
This really is what people need to know to take it to the next level! the runs between chords lesson is awesome too!
Always a good lesson here at active melody. IMO, a great place for advanced beginners. Uniquely clear and to the point and well presented.
hendrix also liked that little hammer on two chord climb motif as well!@
Love these simple lessons give you a little to go away and develop yourself so clever

brian, you should really put part two on youtube...
your direct simple instruction work well for me as a 73 year old beginner. thanks!
You make something that sounds so rich and smooth, with a little practice play sound and play so much easier.
Thank you very much
Join Active Melody improved my playing tremendous and I can now play with myself and sounds pretty good
So nice, so fresh. It's a pity we don't have "part 2" for free, but the man has to make some for living. It's fair

That WAS fun,fanx for teaching
Awesome.
You rock man!
I like your overarching idea that guitar playing is oriented to making music together. Something I think is true with vocals as well; what I hope for in the prayer groups I am in too.
loved it thanks a bunch
That's fuxkin amazing!!
Thank you sir!
Hi, thanks for the lesson :) what key is is this in? Also which scales are you using?
my version of jamming with myself is delta blues, or coupke chords with licks between
Nice!
We say in brasil, TU É FODA BRIAN! SINISTRO!
Your variations to me sounded a bit like Carol King (It's Too Late) and Paul Kossoff from Free - (the hammer on on 5th and 7th fret). And I'm not sneering. Just the process of putting the 2 things together is creating something different from the originals which is what I think you're saying.
That is one sweet sound man. Thanks for sharing!!
Do you place your middle finger alongside your index finger (as support?) when you hold pick
Thumbs up! I could actually make up a song to this jam !!!
I read a lot of these comments. Brian is one of the best teachers out there. You have to use his concepts to create your own ideas. But remember, you cannot ever play well unless you make faces when you play. Just look at BB King and Joe Walsh!
Wow! This is such Fun! Thank-you. :O)
great thanks.
Great lesson, but where is part 2 and 3?
This is NPA70 ? I can't find this one by Alvarez? I got right nr??
What model and brand guitar is that?
I asked to soon!! You go into detail on it in the video.....
Brian
If I wanted an Alvarez Acoustic Electric with cutaway which one would you recommend that sounds close to the MP70
Andrew
Andrew, I think this is the closest to what you're looking for: www.alvarezguitars.com/guitar/mfa70ce/
@@activemelody I love the Alvarez guitars !
thanks
Nice
Can we download the tablature for free? Do we have to be premium for this?
Yeşim Dilmaç You need to be a premium member to download the tablature.
Can you tell much difference between this MPA70 soild wood and the AP70 for sound? Thanks.
sorry for the typo below...with a little practice, play and sound so much easier
What key is this in?
What key is this?
my God I want that guitar
that's a sweet guitar....what is it??
Which guitar is this?
+Bob It's in the beginning of the video ;)
shit i was searching for this all over the internet T_T finally
how do you even make a sound with a "hammer" every time i do it, it just shuts the string stopping any and all sound.... help.
Your probally not hammering hard and fast enough! Give it some practice!
Also if you don't have any calluses it might be harder
how come you don't teach the whole thing? i love all the licks you play at the very start but you only go into detail with half of them ?
+J Booth As I mention in the video at the beginning - this video is only the first half. If you'd like to watch the 2nd half, you can do so here: www.activemelody.com/lesson/how-to-jam-with-yourself-on-guitar-ep045/ - you just need to be logged in as a premium member.

"Learn How To Jam With Yourself on Acoustic Guitar"

you said, don't memorize things, just play. I cannot play without memorizing what you show. so the point you stated was very good, but is it really exists?
You start by memorizing licks (words), and start to improvise by creating sentences (solos). When you learn to speak, you start by memorizing words
+Pablo Leone yes start by learning the scales (alphabet), then start memorizing words. Sorry, I assumed that part would be obvious.
this is lesson for pro,s only in order to get the groove you have to be able to change chords fast
that´s what practice does for you, mate
Alrighty friends I got a sick jam goin
Two words: Lonnie Johnson!
Anyone else 2020😂?
you don't really detail how to jam by yourself. Your just showing us how to memorize how to play YOUR jam that you made up.
Cjw615 its a concept. Every fill/lick he shows can be applied to any key. The rest is up to you.
TABS ?????????
No more sample tabs

You seen like a good player....very nice little jam.....however you talk more then you play....i recommend trying to balance explaining thing and playing better....
my second day playing this im getting better
This does not help much with just this first part.....

Pretty kool but damn there's too much talking. Not important. Not giving lessons to a 3 year old lol, these videos could be cut in half at least man.
Lynna Sims I hear you - but unfortunately this was recorded over a year ago and there's not much I can do about it. I do listen to feedback and I've made major improvements to the cadence of the lessons.

Pretty ungrateful and unnecessary comment. Brian is one of the best guitar teachers on RUclips without a doubt.
too bad too much of this lesson is behind a paywall. This seems like a cool concept but i have no intention of paying for something like this.
the lesson its nod bad, bud you talk too match
Please, the lesson could have been completed in half the time if you stop talking..... are you related to my wife!!!! Lol.
this is 4 years old - i can't really go back in time and correct this
Active Melody 4 years old.... no thats the standard of your playing. No wonder u r on the net cause no band could put up with you, you are THE most boring teacher ever.
Awesome lesson, thank you
