Think it was one of the best shows they've performed tbh. Was on the Balcony at the Odeon and with the assistance of some good edibles the light show just took over. Came out on another plane of consciousness!
Huw was magnificent. Such taste. I remember buying a guitar magazine probably 20 years ago which had an article on Huw, and they basically said how he was such an under-recognised talent in the guitar world. His guitar solo on the Live Chronicles version of Masters of the Universe is just superb. Passionate, powerful, tasteful and much more interesting than your classic blues rock soloist. I have listened to it hundreds of times and it still excites me.
Excellent! I remember hearing this on the radio back in the day - switched on half way through Sonic Attack - as a teenage punk i thought 'WTF is this?' I scrambled to find a blank tape; instantly sold! The next(?) tour (the return of Simon House) remains one of my fondest memories. Great times.

I First saw Hawkwind on this tour at the UEA Norwich In spring 1988 , the xenon codex tour , this gig was recorded at the Hammersmith odeon a few weeks later and first aired on the BBC in concert series in early summer 1988. I had a cassette recording of it, but lost it. In 2008 Chis Hawkins was hosting a series on BBC 6 music - called classic concert , I emailed Chris to see if they still had it , they did and he aired it on Sunday 14th September at 2am in the morning, it was available to listen to for the following week. This has to be one of my favourite live sets with Huw Lloyd Langton absolutely on fire on lead guitar. This is a recording of that 6Music show, thanks for posting... This week I have seen them play the Royal Albert Hall on their 50th anniversary tour. Thanks Hawkwind , constant music for over 30 years ... onwards.
I was in the foyer at the Albert Hall afterwards, some bloke comes up to me and says I should go back inside and get a selfie with Fast Eddie... I'm like.. he's dead mate....oh, I'm a Motorhead fan, it must've been Philthy Phil.... he's dead too mate, you didnt call him Eddie did you? .... no i called him Phil... I've really got to go mate mate....
Thanks for sharing Strayhawk, was landscaper in Fulham back then so rode the old 550/4 up to the gig after work and bought a ticket on the door - Dave was wearing the old lab coat for this one and Huwie Bach was on fire !
i was at the leicester gig a couple of days before this. was my first hawk gig. wow....the best gig ever to this day. the leicester gig was filmed but never managed to track it down. i found the guy who filmed it after 20 years of searching and he was very cagey about it. he had permission from the band but it never saw the light of day. will never forget it for sure.
This is just heaven ✨️ every time i hear this brings me right back to that night, at the hammersmith that will be with me all the time... That's a utopia for me 🚀
This has my favourite version of the war i survived on it, originally it was a bonus track on chronicle of the black sword, saw them a few times in the early 80s plus my mates band screech rock supported them a few times, first hawkwind album i heard was astounding sounds amazing music and it really did change my life ♠️🍀🎧
Me too, on magic mushrooms! In those days the band were still shadowy figures you barely saw. I do remember them wearing lab coats and Alan Davey's was splattered with blood.
i seen this tour at portsmouth guildhall and i remember hearing and taping this of the radio all those years ago,it was my first gig and i liked it.🙃🙂🙃
some of Huw's best recorded stuff here - Wastelands of Sleep, Moonglum, Rocky Paths. he was really going for it on this tour, despite Harvey's chicken samples. I seem to remember the original BBC broadcast featured Dave reading out a list of free festivals and encouraging everyone to go to Stonehenge that year. That bit seems to have disappeared from the CD issue. Wonder why!
I think the inclusion of the free festivals banter caused Brainstorm to have a minute or two sliced off of it in order to fit it into the BBC's 1 Hour slot. When it was later repeated on BBC 7 about 20 years later they removed Dave's chat and added back the missing bit of Brainstorm. Sounds reasonable to me. I'd rather have a more complete song than a couple of minutes of 20 year old gig dates.
@@lorisarvendu you could be right. I always assumed it was because the straights couldn't handle these wild eyed loners standing at the gates of oblivion telling everyone to go to Stonehenge 🤣
Found it! Fantastic! Recorded this from a radio 1 in concert on cassette. Haven't heard this gig for so many years. It's now on my computer forever. One of my fav concerts by them. Thanks very much for the upload.
Brilliant! I had no idea this tour had been recorded. I was at one of the Hammersmith gigs and I remember Tubilah Dog as support - I still have the tour shirt (with arms cut off!) Was great with them still playing the best of the Chronicles tour.
I had the pleasure of growing up with Hawkwind throughout the early 1970's and they are still my go to band when seeking inspiration or a nostalgia trip. I could wax lyrical about past gigs and extraordinary experiences and there are so many stand out moments. Thank you for posting this. Wonderful memories of amazing times and outstanding music...

I own this recording on cassette and remember it being performed on Radio 2. I believe Johnny Walker presented it at the time. I was going to my own engagement party that night so thankfully asked a friends dad to record it for me. This was in my humble opinion one of Hawkwind's best lineups and concerts with exceptional Bass playing, energetic and brilliant drumming, great singing, blistering guitar work and great versions of amazing Hawkwind tracks. They were truly a complete and professional sounding band. The late great HLL was a fine guitar player and so underrated and when he passed away Hawkwind lacked class and became weak. He had a very unique style and sound to his playing, with soul and feeling and always made the hairs on the back of my neck stand to attention. I had the pleasure of seeing them twice in the late eighties and on both occasions they were outstanding. Really pleased to see this recording on RUclips, but it's a shame there was never an official album release, as it would fly off the shelves. Is there a way that I could record this concert onto a CD and if so could anyone tell me how?
@spunkfish I love Live 79 also as it adds the punky edge to Hawkwinds music. Sadly without Huw, Harvey and Alan Hawkwind has gone downhill. Dave alone can't do the bizz.
@spunkfish Thank you so much, I appreciate that. Send it to white2118@mail.com and label the subject line clearly. I will burn the address after we have made contact so I don't get a load of idiots emailing me! Thanks again.
Wow, what a find! I was at this gig (part of the Xenon Codex tour), and my favourite HW lineup too; Dave Brock, Alan Davey, Huw Lloyd Langton, Harvey Bainbridge, & Danny Thompson. Think Tubilah Dog supported too, anyone remember them?

Mmm...Probably the same reason why "Warrior" took so long to be released, and the Hawkestra will never be released - the BBC own the rights to the recording, but members and ex-members have to be paid royalties, and the publishers of the songs as well (Brainstorm, Moonglum, Heads etc are probably owned by different record companies). The BBC could release it as they own the rights to the recording, but would have to pay royalties etc. Whereas if Brock wanted to release it, he'd have to first buy the rights to the recording from the BBC, and then pay royalties etc. That's not including the studio time remixing etc. You certainly would get your money back in sales, but someone's got to fork out the initial outlay. So it's not that somebody is a cunt.
This is brilliant!!!!! Hawkweed live is so much better than their studio output! Could they not use the studio for rehearsing future material...........but record what they then do live on tour to be released on future albums? Or is that too costly????
