I'm the 7 ft giant on the right end of the IU snare line and i just wanted to say that SCSU was SICK! those guys were so cool and I had a blast drumming with them Props to both lines! Probably the most fun I've had in a line. =]
Both schools put on a show. I have marched for a corp style band in high school and for a black university show band. Both styles are unique and entertaining. Both of these lines threw it down and I would say it is a tie due to the different styles and showmanship.
Nice exchange. This was a wonderful case of apples and oranges. This needs to happen more often among HBCU bands. Who knows? It might help other lines improve, if not innovate, in the process.
I see Indiana University’s drum line played “ Latin Lover” by Jim Casalla, legendary percussion arranger, and head percussion instructor for both Santa Clara Vanguard and the Cavaliers. Nice percussion feature 👍👍
Such a great time! So glad SCSU was able to come up to this game. Wish we could have played some more and talked a bit, but it was great to play with you all! - IU cymbal player
"They're two drum lines that take two different approaches. So it's not really fair to pick a winner." I agree, well said! Case in point are the way that each group interprets their changes and rhythm combos within their perspective cadences.
Shoutout and mad props to all the guys and gals in the SCSU Drumline! It's not often we get a chance to drum with any drumlines outside of the Big Ten and this will definitely go down as one of the best drum offs we've had in the history of the IU Drumline. Absolute blast! Thanks again guys! -IU Bass 2
Are people saying there's a "Style" difference simply because it's a black line vs a Majority white Line? Both lines played very melodic material. The make-up of the lines aside from the tenor drums (single) was the same. They both had choreography and visuals. Are they not both playing percussion instruments. Don't see much of a style difference here. Just two good lines sparring musically.
Aren't drumline battles supposed to be one part precision + one part showmanship? Every band competition I've seen have been based on both. If that's the case, while IU, one of my alma maters, was clean, SCSU completed the mix much better because IU was almost no show. And I don't care about the corp versus show band comparison, there are some corp bands which incorporate show into their battles and some show bands exhibit corp extremely well. Just saying.
***** Yo Son, I ain't trippin' at all! Definitely good my way. I grew up watching & listening to Delaware State practice and march... then schools like FAMU, and JSTATE back in the day use to make everybody look bad. But there's nothing like it on earth especially if the sticks are clean. One Love my Dude!
I'm the section leader at Savannah State University and I have to say out of all the HBCU conferences the MEAC has the best drumlines. I'm glad to see the trend of the HBCU drumline wanting to be more technical...it's a good movement. (I wish FAMU would get on board with it.) But yeah Bango Brothers, MDF$, ColdSteel, Sudden Impact, and Krush Groove are the lines to look for in the MEAC! NICE BATTLE.
As a member of a visiting high school band that day (Seymour, mellophone 1.) I think I speak for our entire band when I say we were completly BLOWN away by both bands. As our director went to IU we do alot of big ten band performances, and the SCSU band blew everyone out of the water. You guys are all such great inspirations to high school musicans, thank you so much for such a GREAT performance :))))))
I know that it's any drumline's goal to play as clean as possible because that's one thing that makes watching, listening to, & playing in a drumline fun. What I mean is show bands are more visual than corp style bands so it's no argument that corps style groups tend to play their music cleaner from player to player than show style. Both groups are very good, but like I said, I don't really think it's fair to say either one is better. They're both very good for their different performance styles
Sounding good Indiana. I haven't seen SCSU before. I LOVE the fact that they have the tradition of HSBC's in their drumming AND they have some modern technique and quality of sound in their approach too... Really nice to see them combine the two seamlessly. I'm afraid to scroll down through the comments since I'm sure the usual haters will be on here.
MDFS should have been in this to. I think both lines were excellent, well played. I'm also a drummer and I was impressed. They should have a big drumline competition and everyone should be judge together on cleanliness and precision and showmanship no matter hbcu or Corp style. The competition should be HBCU AND all other college bands together and I think they should also do a mass drum session like they do at the Honda BOTB. Let's make it happen because that's one show I will not miss.
i being a former member of MDFS (NSU), has always looked the other way at SCSU LIne, but the Young Lady that went to Wilson, and ole boy with the dreds have gotten my attention on RUclips!!!! Both Lines were great, and especially proud of the two i mentioned above as well
Very impressive. I would have to call this the first tie that i have ever seen. IU excellent fundamentals, and a fair amount of soul. SCSU good technique and a lot of funk. Great job by both drum lines.
This is epic! I'm an I.U. Alum and a drum corps vet. I was totally expecting SCSU to come out with the tradition HBCU routine. They showed their versatility by playing corps and holding their own against I.U. Way to go!
This is what I'm talking about! HBCU and PWC lines exchanging cadences! Great job to my BBI FFAm, and the UI Line! That 'Roll Out' bass drum lick was nice!
Both bands really did well. I wish I could have heard SCSU's response to IU's second go. Clearly IU took it up a notch. Lol. I think music is the great equalizer and it's awesome that these two Universities were able to get together and make magic. I do hate it was labeled as a battle but nonetheless this was great. Hopefully, this isn't an aberration but a new fad.
Ultimately this is whats it all about, furthering the progression of percussion as a whole! IU crushed, SCSU crushed, awesome job by both lines. I'll leave you all with this...chops are chops whether its show style or corps style. Keep crankin!!
I love HBCU and Div. 1 drumlines but Scsu drumline i feel is the only HBCU percussion section that can keep up with any Div 1 percussion section hands down.
First off, shout out to IU home of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. Good to see these two squads getting a chance to showcase their skills. All those hours of practice make this 10-15 minutes all worth it for a lifetime of memories. Great job to both sides. Bongo Brothers Inc. keep doing the damn thing!
This reminds me of when we (NCCU DOA) played James Madison University's percussion section. It's not about winning or losing its about showcasing the similarities and differences between the two sections and styles. Big ups to SCSU AND IU for holding it Down.
IU probably was a little cleaner, but I think SCSU hung in there. I didn't even know these two played each other, and I honestly don't know how good SCSU's drumline is. It's always good to see a contrast in styles no matter the music, and some us we HBCUs need not be afraid to display or improve our technical side.
i respect indiana just because they went head to head with a HBCU school, most DCI schools are to scared to battle HBCU not all but most of them are. and i like indiana because unlike other DCI schools they have a lil groove with what they do. WE NEED MORE BATTLES LIKE THIS
At the people saying IU "stomped/roasted/dominated" SCSU, seriously how can say that? Because they were "super clean"? And that they played Latin Lover? Lol, come on guys. Just because someone can played Latin Lover doesn't mean they are incredibly superior or better sounding. Both schools were grooving hardcore and at the end of the day isn't that what drumming is about? Props to SCSU, their cadence was hot.
I haven't seen many good college lines and I was surprised at this video. Both were pretty good but the stick height consistency of Indiana was a little better and in my opinion (solely my own) I think the togetherness looks much cooler and shows more talent because it's harder than just playing. But thumbs up to both lines.
@irdeson.Much respect..only reason i said that is because SCSU percussion instructor was a former snare drummer for the blue devils which gives them an edge on most HBCU percussion section. like i said before i love hbcu percussion section VSU, MDFS, JCSU, A&T, Albany State, BCC, Howard drumline is coming up, i live right down the street from howard and theyre stepping their game up big time. Those are some of my favorite lines. Check out the vid Scsu vs Mdfs.
SCSU, WON HANDS DOWN! It's just like comparing hospital food to SOUL FOOD. IU, sounds good but they look like robots. SCSU, danced with their instruments and most importantly made the crowd dance!
@IUBboy05 Realest thing I heard all day No other band would give props to a band that's not theres and doing so you have more maturity than alot of bands imo. And yall was clean imo. -respect
As a '99 grad from the mighty SCSU, I have to say IU snares were more clean and bass more punchy but SCSU wasn't far off on sound either but if you take an overall look at both... that 101 still got it but it was very close!
indiana beats were funkier and cleaner, but SCSU moves were flashier and entertaining (something many HBCU's have over PWCU)....I wish SCSU had played something a little longer and showcased another cadence too...I enjoyed both...Indiana playing some nice shit man....!

I'm sorry...IU"s basses alone won this exhibition. However, SCSU sounded great and I think that they've moved into second behind NSU for best HBCU drumline. But IU is very good!!
I would have to agree on some parts of what you said only because I've played both sides of the tracks. I hate corp style marching but I have to admit it felt great to hear judges tapes and the percussion sections takes the least amount of hits the flag team but to honestly say no fun or swag you have to actually been there to know whats really good. And they should keep that stuff at those D1 schools cuz HBCU's get down
@Qdog2321 haha, understandable, i do the same thing with Bluecoats drumline cause i want to be a Bluecoat. I was extremely impressed with SCSU's playing quality, a lot better than other HBCU's i've seen
@mega man i agree with you. being a sc state alum they realy went easy on IU. i know for a fa t that state coud have come out the bag more for sure especially when someon like my self seen better drumline performance a a student on the campus andthey would then drumline the other bands drumsection socks off.
There is a difference between corp style and southern style. You may enjoy one more than the other, but that doesn't make it better. Trust me, "if you went to IU", it wouldn't change anything. We like the way we do things.

Amen brother. We NEED more of this. I went to Howard University and I love seeing this.
That was awesome!! Both bands were off the chain!!❤❤
Nice to see an HCBU & a Corps Style/DCI drumline battle. Needs to happen more often. Props to both lines!

One of the best battles on youtube, we need more of this
Indiana had nicer cleaner beats, SCSU was more fun.
SCSU's dancing looks stupid.

idc about a winner, i just think its pretty neat, that even different styles would come together and battle like this. i haven't seen this too much.

DCI vs HBCU (God I hate when DCI nerds rip on HBCU drumlines...but that's another topic for another time.)
After listening to this for the third time I can hear what you're saying. IU's piece whilst less flashy was more clean and the beats were audible.
Nice battle! I actually prefer battles outside on tha 50, old school style. Both lines sound good!
this video would be so much better if drums didnt sound so bad on non professional cameras lol i enjoyed this video very much
I like how you note that. Not many would really do so. Show/Pagent bands are VERY different from Corps.
go Stat(SCSU) love to see more of this in within the HBCU drumlines you don't see to many bands in the HBCU doing this its good to go out the box....
Enjoyed both drumlines. Great job!
This was historic in so many ways..
I was told many of the southern hbcu took their marching style from big 10 schools
@kglasker a few of the HBCU lines (MEAC) particularly have either had instructors or members in the line that marched DCI, MDFS (Alex Blake) and Sticky (Ralph Nader) for example, so as you stated the gap is definitely starting to lessen, and over all quality in playing is definitely going up
Btw, this style/technique was used by mostly every DCI corps in the 90s. Awesome. I like Indiana way more here.
Indiana sounds very clean and the precision is awesome.
I see apples to Oranges.. both well played in their Genre.. SCSU being HBCU (I think?) and IU very clean in Drum Corp style
SCSU snares were a bit more clean, and I noticed some scrambled eggs in IU's snares a few times. It wasn't difficulty level either, as there were straight 16th notes. Bass drums were cleaner on IU's sided, but that may be down to the pure numbers as HBCU's tend to use toned basses and like 4 36" bass drums for impact. Overall, I would have to give it to SCSU.
Bongo brothers from SC State clearly had more style and finesse. You hear more power from Indiana because of the sound reflectors on the snares. I want to see what SC came back with the second time, because I know they only played a "bait" cadence!
Neither of these brumlines can touch "Cold Steel" at North Carolina A&T State University. Too bland and robotic!
Very nice job to both drumlines!
i can't lie, them IU cymbals were tight!!!!
