The 215bhp MINI Paceman JCW is powered by a turbocharged 1.6-litre petrol engine and gets four-wheel drive, for just under £30,000. That's an almost identical price to the BMW M135i, the rear-wheel drive hot hatch with a creamy turbocharged 3-litre straight-six pushing out 315bhp. Steve Sutcliffe drove them back to back to find out if the go-kart handling of the Paceman can compete with the hot 1-Series.

Well for starters the Mini looks more interesting. That 1 series has to be one of the most boring looking cars since the BMW 2 series MPV.
Totally, that 1 series overall looks dated and boring while the Paceman still looks modern and arguably great
I actually found out yesterday that used 1series BMW costs relatively the same as used countryman s and vw GTI AND it has way more power. hell I found a 2008 135i with 80k for only $14995 thats $2000 cheaper than the 2012 countryman s at a similar mileage. I love mini and vw , not a big BMW fan but I don't understand why auto makers price cars the way they do or how come the used market doesn't depreciate them differently.

I know this is an old video but here in Holland a Paceman starts at €29.000 and the M135I at €58.000 That`s almost double the price.
I absolutely adore the M135i. If I had the money that would be the car of my choice any day :O
i dont get it everyone is saying that Peaceman is ugly, and that is funny because this is the only mini i ever liked for it's looks

Yeah, this comparison would be massively different if the Mini costs what it does now (£13k) compared to that same bmw.

The price of these cars depends a lot on the country. Here in Portugal a base Paceman JCW is €39.500; a base M135i is €56.500. So the whole argument same-price-very-different-performance is rather limited...
Is it not based on the same 135i twin turbo engine unit...?
They didn't update it. The two turbos were only for the 135i coupe.

Oh yes its fast but in reality ... who needs that ? The BMW is very nice, but just a plain old 3 door hatch
that goes fast, is what I mean. The Mini, downsides and all, has charisma, looks full of personality.
I just don’t get the 1 series or rear wheel drive cars with the weather we get in the UK, I’m not a fan of the paceman either but if I was forced to pick I’d go for the MINI.
Finally a very good review! BTW I would have an A or CLA 45 AMG with that massive 2.0 turbo! Start collecting the money........... NOW!!! :):)
Ok, so I see paddles on the Mini but it has a manual gearbox. Can someone explain that to me?

Comparing it to a small SUV with a 1.6 I4 turbo is pretty ridiculous, no idea where they came up with that idea lol

I have a MINI Clubman JCW and I test drove the JCW Countryman with a view to swapping over. I must say, I was pretty under-whelmed - the countryman doesn't have the lunacy element of the clubman - which is the hatch/clubman's trump card. I can't help thinking they should have put the new BMW 2.0 in this bigger, heavier car -to give it that mental edge. The new 2.0l 328 pumps out 180kw - why isn't this in the 4 wheel drive countryman/paceman JCW?
Nicely said Steve, you'd have to be barking at the moon mad to buy any mini over the 135i M. Hired an 118i M for a week around scotland and that was ok. Id say the 135i M would be brilliant.
With those headlights? Not a chance in hell, in my opinion.

I'm pretty sure a large chunk of the minis retail price has it's roots there.
Brilliant comparison of two £30k BMW products, one is an ugly overpriced car with a 1.6, the other a slightly better looking absolute bargain of a super quick pocket rocket. People who spend £30k on a Mini need theirs heads looking at!

Here in Portugal the BMW costs about £50.000 and the Mini costs £30.000, so the Mini Wins!
The Paceman JCW cost 60000,- € in Norway, while the M135i cost 100000,- €.. There you have it :P
maybe the paceman makes more sense in the 25k pound bracket and if you look at it as a cut price evoque rival?

Also, they need to do something about the quality of the cars. My Cooper S spends a lot of time in the shop.
It is in essence an 'update' not the same block but realistically it is a downgrade after some reading
N55 - single twin scroll turbo with variable cams aluminium block.
N54 - twin turbo fixed cam forged internals also aluminium block.
Interesting stuff.

M135 are also being sold with xdrive.
In Europe they may be similar in price but in South Africa there is a 5000. Pound difference
If you want a modern Mini you have to pay more, that's it. If you want a vintage mini in very good condition you also have to pay a lot.
I do not fancy a Mini because its price put me off, but I understood that MINI is never value for the money like a Fiat or VW. I quite like the MK6 Golf R, and I think MKVII R will be a very good competitor for the 135.
they make a wagon 1m????!?!??!?!!? I know I live in the states so they only issued the sedan. Sad they stop making that truly beautiful driving machine..

It's a shame that MINI's pricing policy makes its cars appeal only to clueless, fashion concious individuals - the JCW hatch is a really great little car and would be a real force on the hot hatch market if it were, say, ten grand cheaper.

True, but in a sporting context the vast majority do prefer rwd. Hence why bmws are known as "sporty".
The tailights of the mini looks lifted straight off a Buick Enclave.
I'm sure that the BMW won this comparison. How ever, for someone who wants a sporty mini, this is the thing. Its all about what you want the best of, what brand. Just as people are fans of BMW, there will be fans that takes the mini, just because :)

Trouble is, you've never driven one. Even the basic 1 series is probably 10 times more fun to drive than this Mini.
the mini has only one plus :it has 4wd which can be useful in snow

Wow I actually really liked this MINI before I saw this review. I thought he was joking when we said the two are the same price and had to look it up for my self. MINI Paceman JCP starts at £29545 and the M135i at £30555. So in the UK they really are almost the same. In Germany the BMW is much more expensive!!
Yes. In Germany the BMW starts at 48.000 GBP. Every single option is very expensive. It's easy to push the price tag to 65.000 GBP.
What BMW was thinking when they priced the Paceman so high? I'll tell what they were thinking: "how stupid are a lot of people who have money, these days! let's sell them an overpriced and ugly hatchback at the price of a 3-series! to convince them, we'll tell them that the car has a lot of style and it's very desirable!"
Not everyone prefers RWD, especially in snowy places.
I really wish mini(BMW) would stop making spin offs of the original model and rather make the original better.

This isn’t a fair comparison. The only competition for what the Paceman is, as an experience, is the Evoque, IMHO.

That's why the only truly good Mini is a Cooper Hardtop. I would never pay extra for a BIG Mini.
Think you're looking at the 135i. No paddles in the Mini.
you can fit a quaife LSD for less than 2000 pounds. I've been considering it, but ultimately the truth is, it's not necessary. The car drives beautifuly as it is.

Both look awkwardly proportioned and the paint colours are ridiculous,however the 135 powertrain is undeniably very good.
BMW's design studio should be completely dismantled/renewed.
It has never been twin turbo'd. The 1M on the other hand is/was twin torbo'd. Making about 20 horse more than the M135i.

The paceman is an suv and the bmw is a hatchback, why an earth they would put a competition between the two, I do not know.
That's why this review is pointless, it was not made to really compare these 2 cars, just to see their massive differences despite their similarities.

Obviously, the Paceman JCW is out classed by the BMW. The Subaru Impreza WRX would have been a better car against the Mini.

Pointless comparison. They were probably compared because they had the two cars on the day and totally different people will buy either one of the cars
Bmw 125i cost alot less and is faster than the Paceman, now they told compared cars on price. and for around 2000-2500pounds you can get xDrive in the M135i.
135i forever and the sound is just amazing , drop that mini crap
this is weird cuz i actually prefer the mini and not the b-em. i love the looks of the paceman over the bmw soooooo000oo much more!!!!! can't help it!
Fit the M135i with a Quaife LSD (1000£) and proper tyres you'll be eating M3s for breakfast.

Every time I see this guy in a review it does not have any value to me after seeing his "Range Rover vs Cayenne review". And Paceman and m135i are not even the same class of cars, not to mention choise of engines.

6.9 seconds to 60 is not quick, 125d 6.5 what does that cost, prob's cheaper.
