I loved the housemaid. It was a great palette cleanser. Housemaid secret was ok but eh and the last book just should have never been written. It was so boring and annoying.

Yes!!! I completely agree. Sounds like we had similar experiences!

The Housemaid(3.25) was too much like The Last Mrs. Parrish which took away from my enjoyment a bit, but it was still ok and I was curious about the sequels since her books are quick reads, but after your review, maybe not 😆

@@ryreadsYes please!! I heard that Frieda "allegedly" copy's plots and Twist from other authors.. that's why I don't read anything from her because I don't want to support that. Hailey Hughes also said something about Frieda on her channel :)

Funny thing is, I also think the writing is average and sometimes so bad that I thought it was a YA romance in the most ridiculous way BUT at the same time I could not stop myself from reading what she writes ???!! so annoying but I think the Housemaid concept itself should stop now, it has no credibility at this point that Milly lives over and over the same kind of things

You are so right. I didn’t even think of the “housemaid” as a common trend but you’re right. That’s prob part of the burden I felt with it. That and the writing just started to drive me insane which i think is partly me in general and just partly where I’m at in my reading right now. Thanks for the food for thought!

The people that have never read, The Last Mrs. Parrish, loves these books. Which is a major bummer bc The LMP is soooo much better. There are tons of people who hate Frieda bc she completely stole the whole story, and has been called out for plagiarism.
I read the first one, just to see what it was like. It was up my alley, I love popcorn domestic thrillers. But not even close to how good TLMP was.

I had no idea about any of this until someone else commented about it! Now I’m wondering if it’s too late for me to read The Last Mrs. Parrish any thoughts?

This is a timely review as I was wondering after finishing The Teacher from Freida McFadden and being less than impressed if I should read at least a second book from this author before I make up my mind about her work. If I do, looks like I should avoid The Housemaid series.
I was thinking about your question pondering why some books that are arguably pretty badly written and ridden with plot holes get such high ratings on reading apps. I get the feeling that people equal "not being able to put a book down" to enjoying a book, which I've come to realize is not the same thing. A good book will keep you engaged the whole time. A bad book propels you forward by not giving anything of substance or revealing much about the story and you keep turning pages hoping to finally gain understanding on what the heck is going on. I've realized this after looking at my list of books read this year and realizing that some of the books I've read the fastest were also ranking very low in my ratings. Two recent examples: Expiration Dates (Rebecca Serie) and Bad Summer People (Emma Rosenblum). Both were read in 2-3 days and neither one felt very satisfying or compelling.

I also think, given what you've said here, that you should skip The Housemaid series. There are so many good books out there to try! Yeah, I wonder too where people's enjoyment comes from sometimes but I know we all read for different reasons so maybe it's a difference of what someone wants to get out of the story, I really don't know lol we sound like similar readers though!

@@ryreads I totally understood what you were saying in this one. like you said at the end its how and when you read things. I gave the first two 5 stars because they were my first thrillers I ever read so they were phenomenal to me. I call it the colleen hoover effect. it's the same way colleen hoovers writing is phenomenal to someone who has never read a single page of romance before lol. I will say when I read the third book I was a seasoned thriller reader I'd say and I couldn't believe that it was written by the same author of the first two or the same author that wrote the inmate/never lie.

I read The Housemaid and thought it was ok but the writing is awful. I did not read the rest. I tried reading The Teacher but DNF'd it. I don't like her writing and won't try her again. She seems to crank out books at warp speed but doesn't write well. I also heard she "steals" plots but I can't speak to that.
No, it isn't mindless entertainment, it's just annoying.

Yeah I have a very similar opinion. It just wasn’t for me. Though she’s insanely popular so people must enjoy something about it! I think it’s the quickness maybe!

I've been seen praise for these books and I've held off getting them, and well I'm glad I did. I'm convinced now that I don't want to read these. *I see in a comment below that those who like these books haven't read The Last Mrs Parrish, which I have and haven't read yet. Think I'll read that one instead and see what the "plagiarism" drama is about! 😄

The book You was wild, I liked it, but it wasn't something I wanted to keep going, if that makes sense. So I haven't read the rest of the books. I watched a few episodes of the series and hated it.
