    Very helpful ! I may add another way of checking paint consistency. I saw it on a youtube video, but I really can't remember the name of the artist. To check that the consistency of her paints was all the same for a pour, she would put a drop of each (same amount of course) on a piece of paper, and then tip the paper at an angle and compare how fast and far the paints would run. If one was running a lot less than the others, she would dilute it a bit more. I found that was a great way to check, visual, and even measurable !

    • @LeftBrainedArtist
      @LeftBrainedArtist  3 года назад

      Absolutely. Every method has it's plus and minuses but they all work if you use them the same for all your paints.

  • @Greenfuego
    @Greenfuego 3 года назад +2

    Great tutorial! So consistency of the paint is really viscosity, and the intent then is to create a consistent viscosity so whatever we create can be recreated to some extent. 💡 So we can create something intentionally and skillfully, as opposed to happy accidents. 👍🏻it’s interesting how the pva/glue affects the surface tension of the paint. Hadn’t thought of it that way before.

    • @possumbold

      Good luck recreating something you’ve created previously. If only. If I want a triptych or diptych I have to pour them at the same time, one after the other or placing the canvases very close and treat it as one painting. I have a beautiful pour that captures everyone’s attention when I invite them inside. I used the same paints, same consistency, same colours, same canvas and same equipment, but even though I did it shortly afterwards I can’t get anywhere close to the original. It’s very frustrating because I could have sold the first one over and over and over; literally a dozen time. Frustrating as it is, it’s also what I love about it, the unpredictable result.

  • @projectalice8119
    @projectalice8119 6 месяцев назад +1

    Thank you for posting this.
    It took my several months to get the hang of paint consistency when I first started doing acrylic pouring, then I went almost a year not doing it on canvas and I feel like I’m having to start all over again. 😩
    I’ve been commissioned to do a Dutch pour Angel for a local Doctor’s office, and I’ve had the worst time getting my paint consistency right.
    I’ve been using DecoArt Americana Wicker White as my base and I think that may be part of the problem. The word “sticky” is the perfect description!!
    In the past, I’ve used Apple Barrel but it has a tendency to crack so I thought I would use something different. As a result I’ve had to scrape the d@mn canvas 3 times!
    So I think I’ll try another brand for my base, and see if that helps.

    Great guide. Funny its called pour painting when most of my time spent is on mixing. I started playing with my pour medium mix and consistencies so i usually mix enough paint for 2-4 canvases. I can start with a ring/split cup pour or 2 then thin a color to swipe and or add silicone to do a flip cup. In the end i think of the group of paintings as a 'color series' that go well with each other. Usually i'm happy with at least one from the batch :)

    Wow! I’m pretty new and I have to say that getting my consistency figured out has been a real pain, especially when using paints with different viscosities, ie folk art and liquitex basics. I really appreciate your videos and website. You help me so much more with the technical aspects than anything else I’ve found. Keep it up! I’ll be there for every new video!

    I really wish I’d seen this two years ago! Very informative about the various mediums. I see the effect with the thinner paints as more like lacing than cells. I love the delicate wispy webbing that comes with lacing rather than the circles with other colours working their way up and forming cells. Thanks for the information!
    Warm honey is certainly too vague. To me it’s all about the trace on the paint in the cup. I agree with you - consistency is everything! I spent 3 months going through a lot of paint and canvases until I perfected the Dutch Pour. I also love waterfall pours - different consistencies are needed for that too. I teach small groups and I’ll only do one style of pour at a time, otherwise it’s too confusing. For Dutch Pours I keep adding water to it until I think I’ve gone too far - then I add a tiny bit more. The queen of Dutch Pours, Rinske Douna doesn’t use a medium at all - she only uses a highly pigmented paint and water.
    I avoid silicone, I like the challenge of creating beautiful lacing.

      Love all this amazing advice. I'll have to try that with my Dutch pours. I have only been partially successful with that. Lacing is one of my favorite things also. Thanks Rael.

    Hi! I TOTALLY APPRECIATE THIS VID . THANK YOU!!
    Im a new artist but and my work has evolved to full abstract and less pouring.
    Question: Do I benefit from mixing paint with medium for brush work in acrylic?
    I don't have the funds to do experimentation myself so I wonder if you would know.
    Thank you ahead!😊

      You do. Mediums help change the texture of the paint and give additional qualities like sheen (gloss, matte, etc.). Pouring medium help thin the paint without using water. There are other mediums also but I don't do much traditonal painting so that is the extent of my experience.

      Your chart is also very helpful. I didn't realise there were so many techniques but I am learning every day. I use your pouring medium ratio for the Dutch pour (still trying not to make mud 😜) but wonder if that ratio is correct for the other techniques? I found slightly thicker works better for chain pull for example. I use mainly Mont Marte paints if that helps. Do you have a list for different ratios for different techniques as well? Really appreciate the time you take to teach us. My note book is getting quite full with all the information you give. Thankyou again😃

      Sorry but I think my last question was a bit ambiguous. I understand all about the consistency on your chart. I suppose the question I have is, to achieve the different consistencies, do you just add more or less medium (I am using your formula of 2:1 medium:water) to achieve the required consistency for the different techniques or do you play around with the water content? Thankyou for your help and the time you take to answer everybody's questions and comments.♥️

      @@florafromaustralia7306 you can either use medium or water. I generally use water. Sometimes medium will take too long to thin and cause your color lose its vibrance.

    I haven't watched many of your videos, so I'm not familiar with your background. You think like someone with a science or engineering background. Havin had a science education at uni, this is very helpful to me. Thank you for your consice thoughts.
    Just a thought: sometimes if I'm mixing a paint that's very thick, I hesitate to use too much water. Instead, I use airbrush medium so as not to overstretch the binders. Just a thought.
