Change a few names, leave a couple the same, and it still matters; damn near 60 years since the original. This version came in my political coming of age and moved me then as it does now. Eddie is the f’n man. Still.
I remember watching this on VH1, and thinking it was the greatest thing ever. I was right, and it is timeless. We need another call to action song like this. Another one from that time is Stephen Lynch America if anyone needs inspiration
This is an update on PHIL Ochs "Here's to the Land of Mississippi" and "Here's to the land of Richard Nixon" (They're pretty much the same song, but one's about segregation, and the other's about (obviously) Nixon).
I don't play guitar so I do not get the left hand reference he makes. I haven't seen enough video of Phil Ochs to know if this was something he did or if it is a reference to the "webbed hand" comment once made about Ochs by a critic. Which Phil later included in a song book. All I can say to that is RESPECT Phil. The critic in question actually met Ochs later and said he came to really like him.
More like those of us who voted for Hilary (though I wish Bernie had gotten the nom)...or really who voted for anyone other than Tramp Stamp...er, Trump :-/ You know, I always thought Canadians were, on the whole, cooler and just all around better people than most of my fellow Americans anyway (or maybe I'm just a Socialist, I've started to realize over the years. Too outside the norm and too far left for even most Democrats. Probably should've been born in another era, just haven't decided whether I'm ahead of my time or the opposite lol). But sharing the world's longest border with a superpower and much of our economic prosperity dependent on American decision-making, Mr. Drumpf's election is unnerving. Our cultural similarities are extensive, but American politics is bizarre to us. Our political parties are ALL centrist or leftist by American standards, and people can vote for different parties and not feel they've 'betrayed' their country. People with different politics don't HATE each other. It's surreal. Drumpf is the last gasp of old white America. I was just hoping to get past the danger of this sort of divisive asshole before the country became too diverse to keep people like him out of power forever. Apparently, all other things being equal, demographics alone would have been enough to defeat him just by 2020.
