I must say you are a great trainer. I just got released from training at my job and my first trainer was flat out awful but my last 2 were amazing. You eagerness to teach and show him how it is done the right way will go a long way with him when he is on his own.

Azipod is a trademark for all kind of diesel electirc rudder propulsion ( SteerProp and general Azimuth propulsion ). It is a very responsive and powerful system. And yes, like Tim said, forget everything about traditional propeller / rudder sytems if you want to learn about Azipods. This summer, I am a skipper of a small 50 meters car ferry with two SteerProp units powered by four diesel electric generators and it is a comfortable ride. As long as there is no black outs... :)

Years ago while still a deckhand I asked the captain how to transit a particular bridge with barge alongside. His answer? Just steer through the bridge opening. Saying it in another way, do what you have to do to do the job. Good deckhands make good captain/mates.

You must be happy you've got your boat back I know you've had it for awhile the videos are not real time. The winch shack is on the port side pretty easy to tell if you have a 4200 or not 😉The azimuth drives on those tractor tugs are expensive, I used to work for a ferry fleet, some of the mid size double ender ro/ro use "POD" drive. One of the ships I worked with she is 308 feet long beam of 58 her draught 34 feet to the bottom of the wheel. She is a heavy pig, It was ice class rated. The new captains that were familiarized on her had troubles, she did not move easily, delayed reaction time was quite a bit. The drive repairs were on going she'd have one of 4 of her right angle drives changed out at least once a year. The technology of right angle drives probably have improved, they were known for not to fair well for long distances. I've seem some new coastal class tugs being built with pod drive, conventional shaft is still the commonly used propulsion system.

Remember, Jack as a senior trainee, to do the same going forward when one day you are the trainer. Because 4 eyes are better than two at all times. Hey Tim, I found the most difficult job when training someone is trying to stop my hands grabbing the wheel, so I kept them in my pocket or arms folded. Then I'd get riddled for looking like a bossy housewife standing on the doorstep yelling at people.
The thing about asking people what there doing, is to take the "I assume" bit away.
I just glad you take us along and juggle camera work with the real job. Stay safe out there and thanks.

I still like the round forward house on the older style tugs. Function is more important at the end of the day though. The nicest looking tug my dad ran was the Earnest M. An old Mc Callister boat the dredge co. bought. The Taurus from Packer Marine was a nice small tug he ran to supply Nantucket and Marthas Vineyard.

I can attest to this, I spent over 9 years on conventional tugs, and recently made the switch to ASD tugs. Believe me, it's more than a challenge. They say the hardest guys to teach z-drive or tractors are experienced conventional tug boaters.

I realize your motivation is to demonstrate ship and barge handling challenges and techniques, but sometimes your videos are wonderful travelogues. I was very excited when you mentioned voyaging to Providence. (My former in-laws lived these.) I look forward to seeing a transit of Narragansett Bay sometime. Just as I was pleased to see shots of Cape Cod Canal, Mystic River (I grew up in Charlestown) and the Hudson in prior videos. As I landlubber, I appreciate seeing familiar sights from the waterside. Keep up the work.

Well, it sure makes perfect sense that a man who knows the deck & all the in's/out's of how that works would be almost a
prerequisite for moving into the wheelhouse although I'm sure there are exceptions to any rule. Everybody has to have as
much knowledge of everyone else's responsibility in an environment like this. Ohh, thanks for showing us the notch where
the barge comes into contact, I'd never known how you connected not about the long strands connect to the winch. peace

Interesting stuff. I've worked on tugs when they were at shipyards but I've never seen a first person view like this. Very cool videos.
One thing I notice is that I never see any push tugs in your videos, are they less common in that area? Being for South Louisiana all I see is pushers, rarely see a traditional tugboat where I'm at.
It'd be interesting to hear about the different types of tugs/pushers and there pros/cons/differences.

    • @TimBatSea
      @TimBatSea  22 дня назад +1

Thank you very much for watching. In general, pushboats are used in inland waters (rivers) because they do a great job pushing but don't handle an offshore swell very well. So boats in exposed harbors and coastwise trade are usually traditional or "model bow" tugs. CUOTO

I've just started watching your videos. Great content and I like how you explain everything. I can imagine it gets quite stressful at times.
Can you explain the pros and cons of push/pull and being on the wire.
Do you change to wire for the longer trips, or are there other reasons.
If I had watched this video a bit longer before asking my question, I would have got the answer lol.

Thank you very much for watching and welcome to the channel. We have more control of the barge in push gear. But push gear has it's limitations. We can't push in much more than a foot or two of swell without tearing things up. CUOTO
