I am Icelandic. And I am familiar with most of the sweets there. All but that nutty thing put on ice-cream. Not sure what that is. But everything else is pretty much staple Icelandic sweets. We put licorice in a lot of candy. Chocolate with licorice in it is a very common type of candy. And that first one is a popular such chocolate. Surprisingly maybe, we have a LOT of ice-cream stores. It is a really popular thing to do after visiting local swimming pools, that all use natural hot spring water, to have ice-cream after. Or to go for a car ride and eat ice-cream. We have a word for that activity 'ísbíltúr'. Literally: ice-cream-driving. And yes, a lot of people put licorice in the ice-cream too. I have to clarify though that the Arctic fox is not Iceland's national animal. The Gyrfalcon is the national animal. Sadly, the cute fox is pretty hated by a lot of people. Because it kills so many birds and attacks livestock. I don't think it would ever be chosen as a national animal.
Cumin? I thought that the main flavor in liquorice was aniseed. But the story behind the name 'Heart-Painer' must be something else! How on earth did it get a name like that?
Great video. But as a icelandic muslim I can tell you some of these candies contain gelatine, just in case someone is thinking of ordering some themself. Like the first one þristur, it contains gelatine.
The next time Mama wants a pure, unadulterated food and is worried about diabetics, dried licorice root sticks are pretty much as unprocessed as it gets. You chew it until it becomes fibrous, then suck the sweetness from it. It's 15% sugar, but since the sticks are very light, you can't eat them fast enough to make your blood sugar spike. (You shouldn't have too much a day anyway, but, again, it's harder to overdose on stick-form licorice than candies.)
I was hoping for some hakarl. THAT would've produced hilarious reactions. It's interesting that licorice never became a thing in south Asia. Fennel's more the style there.
Gods above, imagine Hakarl being shipped that far. The stench would be unbelieveable... If the thing wasn't held back in customs, under suspicions of being a chemical weapon.
As an Icelander myself this intrigues me. appreciate the effort with the subtitles and explaining what the guests are eating in detail! Unlike another similar channel from a little bit further north if you know what i mean
Yeah, that other channel may be very popular, but they don't seem to really respect their participants, often pranking them with purposely unpleasant items to try, like that one dude who can't handle peppers, but has to act like he enjoys super-spicy things. That's what I love about this channel, it's really genuine and honest and the participants are treated like honored guests.
Icelandic, close to the original Norse, i.e. Viking language. Iceland was inhabited mainly by people from Norway. It was a freestate until 1262, when it became part of Norway. In 1536 it became part of Denmark, and remained so, until it became a sovereign state in 1944.

its Herbal, savory, and Natural.

Most doctors say "any amount of licorice is bad for you." I don't care let it kill me its worth it.
Most likely becuz it soothes "heart pain", or heartburn.
They were saying fennel, not cumin.

Mehboob: "Won't you read the D?"

Now we just need to get them some hangikjöt and harðfiskur. Those should be both halal and easy enough to preserve on the journey.

We do use licorice (called "muletThi" in Hindi and Urdu) but mostly as herbal medicine for a sore throat.

Yeah, salty locorice is very much an aquired taste.
Personally, I love it, but these days even a few pieces will give me a nasty heart-burn.
Lots of love to the sender of these tasty treats. I adore licorice, but since they are learning English, maybe give them the correct pronunciation.

They surely tasted licorice, but as it's an unfamiliar taste to them, cumin was a closer reference
